Now I’m sure all of you know Final Fantasy is a series that takes a lot of patience to play. It's not the kind of game where you can rush through it and expect it'll be a piece of cake (Believe me I know, I was like that my first attempts of FF).

I’m not really a patient gamer at all, for most games I just want to get straight into the action immediately whether it's an FPS, Racing or whatever sort of game I play. But with Final Fantasy I don't want to rush through it. In fact I play pretty slow on Final Fantasy, probably because the stories are so interesting I don’t want the game to end to quickly.

So I was wondering, has Final Fantasy made you a patient gamer? Or were you already one to begin with? Or are you still an impatient gamer? tongue.gif

(Oh and sorry If I have put this topic in the wrong section, I wasn’t to sure where to put it)

Phantasy Star (original) for the SEGA Master System was one of the first games I got into and one of the first games I've played, if only partially. And for some of the older CoN'ers, I realize I was apporximately 4-5 before Phantasy Star 2 was released for the Genesis (the first RPG I played through in its entirety) so I was well-grown up to be a patient gamer long before I touched my first FF game, which was FFVIII.

I suppose. My first RPGs were the old Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior games, and it's probably true that those games gave me "patience" when it comes to playing video games. However, nowadays I have the awful tendency of playing a game for awhile, then stopping in the middle and leaving it alone for months, switching to a new game or just not playing games for awhile. Basically, these games may have made me a "patient gamer,", but my lack of attention span manifests itself in other ways.

My first RPG was Dragon Warrior for the NES and I was about two thirds of the way through it when I started on FF. Rather than patience per se I've been more prone to rush my way through a game for hours at a time and then when I get to the point where I need to stop and level up my gameplay sessions drop to just a few minutes here and there. Either that or I get to a point and give up entirely (The final boss on Xenogears for example)

As a gamer, i'm extremely patient. I walk around, fight everything, talk to people, enjoy the scenary and eventually progress the story.

FF8 was my first RPG.

I think games like Zelda and Final Fantasy made me a patient gamer, yes. When i watch my friend play Twilight princess, he walks around completing stuff in Ordon (the first town) for some time, after which he judges the game to be boring, never wanting to play it again... I, having completed the game, know that it gets more intense later on wink.gif

Final Fantasy helped me become more patient, but I think Resident Evil actually made me patient more than anything. I can't count the times that I rushed through rooms and missed stuff that I needed to move on lol

RPGs in general force you into being patient for the most part. More so SRPGs like FF Tactics and Disgaea though.

But most games these days have puzzles, collectables, secret areas and second endings that require you to buckle down and master them. Not like the NES/SNES game when usually the only goal was to make it to the other side of the level. =P

I guess they have. Normally it takes me a while to get through a game. I might be too patient, because I like listening to the stories of the games almost more than playing them.

Patience is a virtue that I will never possess. If something is taking too long, I groan, mutter, growl, etc. You know, lengthy boss battles and long freaking dungeons. It doesn't matter how many Final Fantasies I play, it always ends up the same. I even didn't finish FFXII because I got side-tracked and haven't gotten back around to it. Square will have to up the ante a bit before I need to get patience.

Final Fantasy definately gave me patience regarding battling, leveling up and scouring dungeons. Really, I started on FF so early it moulded my developing little brain into expecting, nay demanding those sorts of things. If a dungeon doesn't have two diverging, perilous paths, one going forward, the other to a possibly worthwhile treasure, then I get suspicious.

The thing it didn't cure however, was my impatience when it comes to text. I get super impatient with slow-loading text, because I'm a fast reader. Thus, I developed a compulsion for hitting the A button ALOT to try and advance the text. It was okay with FF, because I'd played it so much and not a ton of the text was imperitive to read. However a single playthrough of Phoenix Wright cured me of that. Try accidentally skipping over the single crucial statement the witness only makes once. Yerg.

I dont think anything can make me a patient gamer, it's just hardwired into me. I have almost zero patience with games that don't appeal to me, even with games that I enjoy, I can't play them for too long. Thankfully, most final fantasy titles appeal to me, and any games that dont, I try to force myself to play, usually resulting in getting 90% through the game and not caring to finish it (this happened with bioshock, for a recent example)

Something that I just thought about, though, is that when I was younger, like 5-10 years ago, I played the same games for hundreds of hours on end. Now I can barely spend 40-50 without dying of boredom, even if it's a fantastic title.

Well this series isn't mega man or anything else. It's a real RPG. Real RPGs take patience whether it makes you patient varies but the every game in the series requires patience to play. If you do not have patience enough to play the series then you can not be a fan therefore you shouldn't even be here.

I'm not sure. I think I enjoy Final Fantasy so much that I'll wait a long time for anything (good plot, a boss battle, loading, etc.) because it's a Final Fantasy game.

I know I'm biased when my friend says to me, "Why do you waste your time with these horrible graphics?" when I play FFVI. Yes, it did take me awhile to get used to the graphics when I encountered it a year ago, and the loading times and encountering obstacles is quite frustrating, but I've learned to look past the flaws, as I have played FF for a very long time.

(She's into books, so I have a difficult time explaining that games can have plot too, but you have to go searching for the correct ones. You can't expect any story in Burnout: Revenge, for instance, can you? Explaining that is going to take some patience, also.)

Funny, most people (well from what I've heard) are not a fan of the graphics for FFVII, but personally I love them happy.gif

And I agree with you, I don't know why people think games don't have plot. It all depends on what game you pick. Like any FF will have a story but like you said games like Burnout or Guitar Hero dont really have a story. (Unless you count the 10 second cutscenes in GH3 tongue.gif )

Oh, she's never seen me play FFVII (I honestly have not picked up that game in years)...If she did, she'd probably make fun of the block-like characters and call them "block people". I really liked the backgrounds of the games. Really realistic, I think, but I think the graphics get negative feedback because the characters looked odd. They are all without a nose, and have box fingers. Genetic mutation, perhaps?

Most really popular games have no plot. It's easier for a shallow simpleton to sit there and waste away with a plastic toy guitar, or just shoot people on Xbox live. It's more fun for them, but I myself would hate to say those are all the games I play. I admit I like games where it's more interactive and fast-paced and I don't have to deal with a story (like GH). But I also enjoy games where I can look at a pixelated character and say, "A whole book can be written about that character, because they have a personality and a past, even though they're in a game."

In summarization, FF has given me the patience to deal with friends who don't know much about RPGs. One day, I think I'll have to get her to sit down and give her a nice dose of Final Fantasy...

Same here, when I stop playing a game I most likely won't play it again for a while wink.gif only with Final Fantasy i got the Patience to complete it

I never really noticed it until i watch my friend, who was trying to play Final Fantasy 6 and he was getting irritated with all the dialoge. Whenever i play a new RPG i always have the patience to talk to everyone, but my bro doesnt think so, so i guess Final Fantasy, being the first RPG i ever completed at the age of 8, did make me more "patient".

It's definitely made me incredibly patient. I'm willing to overlevel by about ten levels before a certain boss if I feel like it and quite often I do. I'm also willing to grind for money if it's to purchase certain items even if they're not that necessarily. I've been playing Final Fantasy since about 8 years old and from then on, I have taken a steady and cautious approach to RPGs.

The only games I can think of that tested my patience were Metroid and Super Metroid.

FF never came close to either.
