Well One addition that I know of is that characters can use the abilities of characters who you can no longer have in your party.
for example rydia and rosa and use twin magic and Cecil can sing. -------------------- "Have you ever seen a baby do that before?" |

What about edge does he get the ability to us kick? and does rydia retain white magic from tellah? Who gets peep? -------------------- Don't fear the reaper! It doesn't quite work that way. Whenever a character leaves your party, you gain that character's special individual ability as a special equippable item on one of your other characters. For example, after the twins leave, you can give any two characters of your choice other than Kain the Twin ability (because Kain doesn't have MP). I think all you get is Twin, Sing, Peep, Kick, and Regen, but I'm not 100% positive about it. -------------------- |

The only character which never has ANY MP is Cid, iirc. There are at least 30 equippable Decant Abilities in the game. |

It's like you're taking FF IV's cast of characters, and then you're throwing in FF IX's ability system with all of the ability gem nonsense. I can definitely roll with that. -------------------- |

Yes, the good thing about the DS version is that a lot of the bugs that are present in previous versions and fixed and characters are pretty balanced for the most part.
For example, Rydia as a child is fairly useless when she first joins your party, at least until you get some magic. Rydia joins your party at a set level (about 7) in the DS version, starts out with some magic learned already and learns a lot more white magic, as well. You can set to use a staff or rod in the command menu and replace the Fight command rather than go through lots of menus. Rosa is a lot more powerful in this version, too. One of the main problems with all previous versions is the weakness of healing magic in the menu. Using white magic tends to be a lot more powerful in battle in previous versions and works normally in battle. This is fixed up in this version. Rosa's Pray is a lot better since it restores about 10% of max HP AND MP when it works (and it's rare to have an unanswered prayer) and Arrows never run out in this version, like in Final Fantasy XII. All you have to do is purchase or find the arrows once and just equip the ones you need. -------------------- "You underestimate the strength of a Jedi's mind, Brejik. I know about the abilities being kept when a character leaves you're party, so i got to thinking and have to ask this. Does anyone know if cecil will give his dark knight ability out when he becomes a paladin, or does he not have any dark night abilities this round?

You actually get the "Dark" ability by stealing it from Odin. I got lucky the second time I used Steal and obtained it. Gives Edge something useful to do during that battle.
By the way, we have a release date now. Final Fantasy IV DS is being released in July (not sure of exact date) as confirmed by a recent Nintendo Power article. Square Enix has confirmed a July release as well, at least for us here in the States. Edit Of course, there's already a topic for the US release date, but I just thought I'd post on here in case anyone has missed the topic and is barely reading this one. The "Darkness" ability is a buff now. For a few turns, when Dark Knight Cecil's Attack causes more damage (as well as causing Darkness damage), but each time he attacks, he receives a little damage afterwards. It's a lot more beneficial than the previous Dark Wave ability.
Dark Knight Cecil has access to this ability and you don't get to keep it once he becomes a Paladin. The Decant itself for the ability is stolen from Odin so that any party member can learn it. From what I have seen, Kain gets the most use out of learning the Darkness decant. -------------------- "You underestimate the strength of a Jedi's mind, Brejik. I dunno the thought of Cecil Singing scares me....not only that, the sing system didn't work well until FFV and still the only useful song (without wasting a turn) was requiem. Giving Edge Kick would just top off a better version, i'm sorry but edge just sucks....sucks horribly. he's still smooth with the ladies, I love his char, but i just hate him in battle.

I think this new system with adding abilities to the characters will be intersting and at the same time walking on thin ice. It will allow you to give balance to the final team, while still allowing you to custimize them. However i fear they may go a little over board witht his and make it possible to "god" a single character. What i mean by this is putting every good attribute or ability possible on you're favorite character and leaving the other underpowered. I dont know i will have to see.

the only problem is that there already was balance to the final team, 2 attackers, black and white mage, and the decoy/thrower, plus the balance would be destroyed, i thought it was cool in IV being able to switch party members but i think they are drawing the line on the giving people abilities, kick i can see, but twin and recall (for tellah) just seem pointless, and why do you even need to sing after you lose edward?

I seems pointless to include. I am however hopeing that you can get another white magic and another black magic to put on people, i'd love to give rosa black magic and have rydia be back to her former self using white magic as well. I am wondering if with all these new abilities if they also didnt add in anymore calls/summons. -------------------- Don't fear the reaper! see i like the idea but it would conflict the story, remember when Rydia comes back in the dwarven castle? "I gave up my white magic to strengthen by calling powers" I don't think there's gonna be another chance of her getting white, which is basically why Rosa is in the game aside from a side plot.

Still i've been in situations where she would of been a useful healer over cecil who only got cure 2. I would much perfer her with white mage and black magic since calls seem to take forever for me to get out (some times i've gone five turns before she even gets 1 call in.) plus not to mention that it would balance her out. And in the story she was afraid of fire but still learned it on all levels, so why not do something like that with white magic?

On Cecil - his MP has exactly one use - using Cure outside of battle so I don't have to use Rosa's.
On FF IV DS - the more I read about this Decant system, the more intrigued I get and the more I worry that I might **** up. If you give a character that eventually leaves your party a Decant (like Edward or one of the twins), then you don't get it back, but the Decant you get from the character you lost will get powered up by Decants you left on the lost character. This provides incentive to deliberately "waste" early-obtained Decants on temporary characters, to save late-game decants for permanent characters, and to customize these things vewwy, vewwy, cafuwwy. I'm excited. And a little scared. -------------------- |

Say what? you mean there is a limit to how many you can have at one time, and how many you can use percharacter?

well that seems reasonable, i can see where they are coming from, having everyone know black magic seems like an unfair advantage.

But why would the limit the number you can have at one time? What if you want one of you're final team members to have a move such as sing, or peep?

The US release date has been set for July 22, 2008. Thank you, Wikipedia. FFIV DS Wiki
I only wish that FFIV: The After, and Square-Enix's other Mobile games would come to the US... Japan gets all the phone games... I read my earlier posts on page 2, and I want to smack myself after reading them. Just 80 more days to go untill it comes out... |

Ok, here's the Decant's in a nutshell.
Each character that leaves your party for good give you 1 to 3 Decant depending on how many you gave them. Obviously you have to give to get as most of the last Decants given are the best. How do they work? Each party member has a list where every Decant taught is kept. To use them they must be in your battle menu. For example, Rosa. Rosa Fight White Magic Aim Pray Item Here is your list right. Now any one of those commands can be switched except for the "ITEM" command. So let's say Rosa wants Bard Song (now the much improved version of Sing). So one command has to go, let's drop "FIGHT" as "AIM" is just as good or better. As a sidenote you can reorder your commands, as well as set an auto-action from any of the charaters known commands, even one's not equipted. Rosa w/Bard Song Bard Song White Magic Aim Pray Item Also: Possible spoilers: highlight to view Song Magic Frog Song Casts Frog on all enemies. Hero Song Raises all stats by 10% until singer is finished singing or interrupted by a physical attack. Lullaby Casts Sleep on all enemies. Piggy Song Casts Porky on all enemies. Recovery Song Health gradually recovered until singer is finished singing or interrupted by a physical attack. Silence Song Casts Silence on all enemies. Speed Song Raises speed for all allies until singer is finished singing or interrupted by a physical attack. Temptation Song Casts Confuse on all enemies.
