Well, spawned from the Elvis vs. Beatles debate, and the current Ongoing History of New Music's Top 25 most influential bands ever, who do YOU think influenced music (and, to a lesser extent, society in general) the most?

I would note the old, old blues bands, but since 99% of modern music is based on blues in one way or another, they're kind of a shoo-in.

Sorry if your choice isn't here, I could only do 10 after all... note yours if it isn't listed.

the rolling stones... i think neal said it best, the beatles influenced the way people looked and lived. their music was good, but it more effected the life of people. the rolling stones influenced mostly all the bands that played after them. from cover songs to the way some played their insrument, the rolling stones was very influential on a rock band.

The Beatles, as I commented about in the Elvis Vs. Beatles post.

Elvis has my vote. He was the most sexually non-innocent singer of his time, and if it were not for him, television would be much more modest.

probably the greatest guitarist who ever lived, Jimi Hendrix. It's because of him that now you see all this funked up super funky and wild guitar soloes.

Black Sabbath. Simply because they influenced metal, and hell, even punk bands will state them as one of their influences. It's that simple, they made metal, and had an impact on all other types of music. Also, Led Zeppelin was a great influencial band, I mean, who doesn't admire the vocals of Robert Plant and the skills of Jimi Page.

Jimi Hendrix was a god, but he still wasn't as influencial, because not many would look up to a black man. Now, people start to idolize him, back then, not so much.

Slayer was influencial too, not so much to be that well known, but they helped bring back metal when grunge was killing it off, and if not for Slayer we wouldn't have black metal and death metal, not that most of you like that, but still, they had an impact.

You also forgot a genre of music which is a VERY big influence: Funk! I like Death metal and horrorcore music, but I am a funk soul. I like bands like Galactic, old school Outkast. I'm not even gonna start naming musicians there because there are and was and will be so many good acts.

I blame Nirvana for inspiring crap bands like Nickleback , Edema (don't think I spelled that right)  Puddle of Mud, Hubastank (though, truth be told, I acually like the stankmysters) etc.

Every song by one of the above bands(thats been on the radio, I haven't taken the time to listen to one of thier albums)  is either a sonnet, or a guy whineing about how is girlfriend is a bitch.

These bands give grunge a bad name...

As much as some people deny it, KoRn was a huge influence in the early to mid 90's. KoRn, although I will forever be ashamed of this, created Nu-Metal, by combining rap like vocals, and detuned, heavy guitar riffs. After KoRn released they're self titled album in '94, bands like Limp Bizkit, Coal Chamber and such begin taking the music style KoRn created, and modifying it to better suit them. Thanks to that, we have bands like NickelBack, Staind, Linkin Park, Drowning Pool, Papa Roach and such. Disgraceful, yes I know, but still influencial.

Yeah, I was surprised Nirvana wasn't up there. Nirvana helped punk out, brought out grunge, and though most bands they influenced sucked, it's influential nonetheless.

I voted for the Temptations, but my write-in vote (from the obscure hip-hop world) is for Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, who really helped make hip-hop an accepted art form instead of just something to do on the streets. 2nd= Public Enemy, 3rd= Wu-Tang Clan

Wu-Tang? You sure about that? I mean, there are a lot more powerfully influencial bands than the Wu-Tang clan. I know you might have brought them up as a group that is different from all the ones mentioned above, but I think a lot of bands are more influencial in their same genre of music. Like the 666 mafia, or like the beastie boys. They are both great hip-hop bands.... The old school Beastie boys, their new stuff sounds more like a techno blurr of hi-hop.

Edit:Correction, rap, not hip-hop.

Wu-Tang, because the grimy New York rap they started with 36 Chambers in 1993 influenced the sound of EVERYONE in the hip-hop world today. If it wasn't for them, there would be no Biggie, Nas, Jay-Z, Black Star, Ruff Ryders, Mobb Deep, etc. They haven't been anywhere near as good since, but 36 Chambers is hands down the most influential album of the 90's (in hip-hop)
