Most of the normal battle themes I find underwhelming and I'm hardly able to listen to them on their own, however the absolute worst music I've ever heard in a Final Fantasy game isn't one of these. The tribal chanting of the Fanatic's theme in Final Fantasy VI is just plain awful. Especially since it's such a short loop for such a long climb... I'll submit that it does indeed fit the mood but that's just about the only nice thing I can say about it...

I heartily enjoy FF music for the most part, however, there are some pieces from over time that I found to be sub-par.

1. The opening theme to FF IX is too hum-drum and the collaboration of instruments I think sounds overly antiquated.

2. The battle theme to FF X2...*shudders* That is the WORST battle them ever. Even worse than...

3. FF V's battle theme. Just...no.

4. Lastly, the Chocobo theme in FF IV does no justice to some of the awesome themes we get later on (Viva la Techno de Chocobo!)

I think I liked all of the music in FF IV and VI, but I REALLY didn't care much at all for the music in FF V (except for Clash on the Big Bridge, that rocks) and FFVII.

Oh, FFIX had some really good music in it too, especially the ones that The Black Mages had on their album - Hunter's Chance and something else, I forget the other track's name.

On a side note, the Falcon's theme is probably my all-time favorite FF piece, and Epitaph (from FF VI, when Setzer tells his tragic story) is also very memorable.

i didn't like Rufus' Welcoming Ceremony as well, it seemed pretty jarring and sonorous to me after a while, but other than that, i really like the rest of the music in ff7

i think that "Eyes On Me" in ff8 was fine, but i don't really like the rest of the music there, there just wasn't any really memorable music in the game that i can recall, and the rest of the tracks aren't very inspired either.

I don't know about worst, but my favorite music EVAR had to be the FFVI Phantom Train theme.

I'm pretty much obsessed enough at this point that I've memorized all of the BGM in FFVI note for note. XD

Any battle/Chocobo/Victory theme. After you've been playing for about 75 hours, and you're only on the middle of the second disk out of three, it gets annoying.

But there's also the feeling of comraderie when you start to hum a random theme and the other FF players in class finish it with you (Imagine an AP class of 35....with about 15 kids humming the chocobo theme from VII)

Wow, whenever someone mentions bad FF music, FF8 seems like the best candidate. Disc 1 gets most of the good tracks, but Disc 2 and 3 of the OST are rather shoddy with too much faux-militaristic downbeat marches and go-nowhere spooky themes. Worst offenders of being sloppy, annoying, or threadbare enough to be lazy:

- Shuffle or Boogie [TT Theme]
- Fear
- Unrest ["The Spy" is funky; this one is a sleepwalk]
- Intruders
- Drifting [3:00 long of weak, 3-5 note synth patterns?]
- Rivals [
- Tears of the Moon [Sounds like Drifting except with more 'plink' noises]
- Overture [song that plays at title screen. I always found it goofy/lame]

It's really too bad much of the "atmospheric" and "thematic" music ends up running together, because the standouts [like FH's theme or "Dance with the Balamb-Fish" which manages to sound fun and formal without being dreary] deserve better. Disc 4's pretty good with the multiple ending themes, and "Modes de Chocobo" is a close contender for best chocotheme made thus far.

Overall, I think the OST just suffers from being too melancholy and dour. Most people can think of a band that rocked out before making ballads and mellow stuff. The best moments are definitely when Uematsu decides to kick some dust up and use the orchestration for something other than organ/synthy murk.

Technically this isn't an FF, but Dirge of Cerberus has this one part at the end where the choice of music was simply... wtf?

Possible spoilers: highlight to view
So Omega has awakened. The world is on the brink of destruction. All hope seems lost until everyone shows up and (in the corniest scene in video game history) cheers Vincent on, who breaks through Omega ("Go Vincent!!" "Hmm... looks like it's time to save the world again."). Woot! Let the final battle in this dark, moody game begin?

No. First we have to go through a stage. With jpop playing in a loop. It's all very anime-craptastic and uber-cheery... when the entire game has been very dark, somewhat industrial, and sets a generally very serious mood. So much for all the buildup!

Seriously, people should plan the media around the storyline instead of working on random songs and trying to find a place to hammer them into the game because the devs like them. :/

Oh yes, Hunter's Chance is super cool : D The Black Mage also has a version of Vamo' Alla Flamenco. Needless to say that it rocks.

I have to say I'm super faithful to the 8-bit/16-bit final fantasy era. Music included. And there is some great music in ff7 and beyond, no matter what I think Uematsu is a friggin genius (he better be scoring ff13, since he skipped 12.)

That being said, I'm not particular to the chocobo theme. And that's paramount through all of the final fantasys. It's not crappy or anything, just doesn't tickle my fancy.

And aside from that, I really didn't like x-2's music. J-pop just makes me feel a little more.... ninny-ish. I feel like I should be wearing some kind of schoolgirl outfit and having sleepovers... or something like that.
