We already have 13, possibly going on 14. I can't really see a FF53 in the future, but it's definitely possible, if the world hasn't already ended by then...
But, seriously how many do you think there'll BE? -------------------- "So imagine Kefka swearing and yelling that he'll take revenge, but doing so in a way that's... somehow... polite and feminine." |

As many as there are demand for. A friend of mine said that demand for Final Fantasy games has subsided in Japan (I make no claims as to the accuracy of this statement). If this is true, then it's really up to the other major markets.
If you want me to guess a number, I'd say XX (20). This post has been edited by Suunok on 20th September 2007 03:59 |

I hope they make 30 just so there can be Final Fantasy XXX and I can laugh about it.

Quote (Zero_Hawk @ 19th September 2007 23:13) I hope they make 30 just so there can be Final Fantasy XXX and I can laugh about it. The way the series has diverged from the RPG genre means Final Fantasy XXX will probably be a dating sim, in a fit of massive irony. I'm tempted to say 15. It's a nice, round number, and in about 10 years the gaming market will have probably changed considerably. Demand for RPGs and/or MMORPGs may not be as high as it is nowadays. On the other hand, I just can't picture Square taking the initiative of starting over with a new flagship series after it's been milking the Final Fantasy label for so many years. They'll probably continue making them until the company has to fold (if it ever does; maybe Square-Enix will become our new robotic overlords in the next century or two.) Man, screw FF. Square needs to make a second Einhander. ![]() -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

[Attempts to answer seriously]
I think that the series will go on for a damn long time, for the rest of the foreseeable future. If Bond can last forty-plus years and twenty-plus films, then FF can hit similar numbers. However, I also think that we're going to get fewer and fewer "true" numbered FF games, and more multi-game universe-spanning sets of games. The past two to three years have given us the Compilation of FF VII, Fabula Nova Crystalis FF XIII, and the FF XII Ivalice Alliance. For better or for worse, those three projects are only the beginning. -------------------- |

You know, with all the talk about the death of single-player gaming, I'm surprised
that FF is surviving so well. Happy, but surprised. Too bad CrystalChronicles was so hard to get into; I'd love a game in the future that could be an at-home MMORPG, along the lines of the Tales series co-op. That might be an interesting direction to take for future FF running to that XXth point: single-player OR co-op stories, without penalty for choosing one over the other. -------------------- Putting the A's in W lm rt: A11smart, Jobclass: Retailer. |

That's a thorny question. I think one thing to consider is how this coming generation will veiw Final Fantasy. I mean, let's face it. Us kids of the SNES have been pavlovian-trained to salivate whenever we see Final Fantasy slapped on something. We grew up with the early FF masterpeices, and I think it gave alot of people a sense of brand loyalty, so to speak. Will Squenix continue to pull in kids who's introduction to the franchise were games like FFVIII, or nothing at all?
I'm no nostradamus, but I think Squenix is gonna have to up the ante if they want to pull in the numbers they're enjoying now. Final Fantasy's are still good, but do they have what it takes anymore to differentiate themselves amongst other RPGs, or games in general, to an audience that doesn't have a fond Final Fantasy history with them? Also, I'd like to point out the irony of this topic? Will they ever stop making Final Fantasy? -------------------- TURKEY! - (The only way not to get blocked for using Fowl Language) |

The love of an artform (if we dare to call video games such a thing) is always, and will always be, overridden by the desire for the green. It doesn't really matter if the demand lasts for a while, either, because SquareEnix will probably spend two or three games trying to revive a hypothetically dead Final Fantasy franchise anyway.
I envision an eventual degradation of game quality, a few Best-Of and Remake collections, and a tainted, forgotten, ugly, cryptic, and untrackable death. -------------------- I find your lack of faith disturbing... |

They'll stop making the numbered titles eventually, but forever continue to make Final Fantasy: (insert subtitle here). I'm almost thinking FFXIII will be the last of the numbered FFs, and then after that it'll be like Mario Brothers, where it's becoming more like a brand name than a "series,"really.

Oh it's very much been more a brand name than a series for quite a while now. Hell, I believe when VI originally came out to our shores in '94, there were more off-series FF games than there were actual series games.
I imagine it's gonna go one way or the other with little moderation involved. Either Kaps right and it'll slide down the muddy smelly slope of mediocrity or it'll find a reniassance and fly off the shelves all over again. Time will tell I suppose. I think its a very good question. The series has gone on for a really long time and its put out alot of hits. But i tried playing FF12 and i wasnt into the new battle system or the story. The story was boring, i didnt like it at all, but thats just me. What I am trying to say is that Squares "Originality" is going to run out soon. I dont think i will even bother with FF13 and I will be damned if i even think about a possible 14. Just from my point of view, sales will begin to fall or they will rise with the new generation of the "Graphic Hungry" generation but ether way, i think it will stop at 17. why 17, i dont now, maybe because 17 is my fav number?

19. Just 19. Exactly 19.
Of course, FF will live in a sense that they'll probably just keep throwing FF7 spinoff junk. I'm predicting that it will eventually become Ernest-esque movies. 'Cloud goes to Camp', 'Barret goes to Jail', 'Sephiroth Scared Stupid', 'Yuffie in the Army', 'Tifa saves Christmas.' But in all seriousness, it'll last until it becomes too unprofitable and/or redundant. Mario and Zelda games are still around, granted some of them weren't winners, but they still sell like crazy. Final Fantasy still sells like crazy, because they're still pretty good. Sure, FFX-2 was...uh...a glorified pillow fight, but FF XII was good. So yeah, until we all run outta money. -------------------- Really Random Quote of the Day: "Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war." - Richard M. Final Fantasy XXX would be awesome... of course, the game would get an AO rating purely for the title.
![]() Quote They'll stop making the numbered titles eventually, but forever continue to make Final Fantasy: (insert subtitle here). Agreed. At some point, I think they are just gonna have to drop the numbers, although... If they didn't, it would be funny to hear an argument about FF CIX and FF VI: "Are you talking about CIX, or six?" "Neither, I was talking about nine!" **Strange route to take with punchline** Point is: numbers will be dropped at some point. All the games they seem to make now have some goofy subtitle after them anyways. Whether it be Revenant Wings, War of the Lions, or Crisis Core... They're priming us to start using such subtitles for a more permanent thing. Quote I'm predicting that it will eventually become Ernest-esque movies. I'm gonna say that in the main series they'll go up to XX, if not very much higher. As for side series, probably a total of 30 more - this includes remakes, direct sequels/prequels, and all new stories like Crystal Chronicles. It'll probably go down in history as the largest and top-selling game series ever.

It's Really hard to put a number on it... but I think, as do most of the people it seems, that they will soon drop the numbers because idk, I think that eventually squenix will just run out of original ideas and end up having to stick with ( at least in terms of the Final Fantasy series) a bunch of spin-off games. who knows maybe they'll incorporate that into their game-making. like leave certain things unexplained in hopes of a possible spin-off...that would be funny hahaha.

I wonder if you could reverse the MMO experience: an RPG shared with
others following a storyline in a sandbox universe. Instead, a FinalFantasy not unlike KOTOR, where the story becomes driven by the decisions and actions of the player, instead of following rather strict rails. I could see this taking it to the XXth Finale Fantasy. -------------------- Putting the A's in W lm rt: A11smart, Jobclass: Retailer. |
