I've just managed to get Final Fantasy IV on Gba because I'm not lucky Enough to own the original version.
I have just reached the magnetic cave and am wondering how best to get through the cave. I've Noticed Mythril weapons dont count as metallic weapons, however I am getting laid to waste because of my armour. Is there any armour recommended for this cave? -------------------- "you did something I saw as your suicide: you refused to an admin WITHOUT GIVING ANY PROPER REASON. Equip everyone in cloth type clothing. Yang and Tellah should be good. Have Cecil and Cid opt for gear more like Yang and Tellah's. Opt for the bow and arrow set up since they'll be lacking defensively. Make sure everyone has rings instead of gauntlets, that sort of stick. I'm pretty sure Cecil's and Cid's weapons are magnetic regardless of whether or not they're Mythril.

All of Cecil's weapons are metallic except for staves and bows, and all of Cid's weapons are metallic except for bows and the Wooden Hammer. Do as ZH said, equip Cid and Cecil with the best clothes/robes you can find, and have Cecil use bows and Cid use either bows or the hammer he starts out with. But keep some metallic weapons in reserve, because you'll want a few for the dungeon's boss.

The "magnet" effect only occures when you ENTER a battle.
This is very important. It means that if you have metallic equipment on AFTER the battle has started, the effect will not take place and you can use your stronger equipment free from paralysis. Not 100% related to the question, but... -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

Is there Gaia Gear to be had? I believe that's the strongest clothing you can use at that point in the game. Yang's claws somehow don't count as metallic, as he told you, but Cecil's stuck using bows and arrows and Cid has to use the wooden mallet, which actually isn't all that bad. The Gaia hammer would be better, but I think you don't get that till the Tower of Zot.
As for Cecil, you're kind of screwed. If you can manage to get arrows that produce some kind of status effect, like Poison or Darkness or (best of all) Medusa, that's one way he can help out. Otherwise, I believe Fire arrows are your best bet, because the bats hate them. But then the Lamias hate Ice, so I guess bring some of those, too. Just remember that Cecil using arrows can be put in the back row (with Tellah), and that before you initiate the Dark Elf, put Cecil back in the front. Oh, and KEEP THOSE METALLIC WEAPONS in your inventory throughout the cave. You'll need 'em. -------------------- Some ghost of me might greet my son the day he is delivered. Quote (SonOfASubmariner! @ 4th September 2007 07:43) I just run from everything in the cave because it's annoying. This cave is far from annoying and running is only necessary if you are in a jam. Key to running a muck in the magnetic cave is as mentioned, and the most obvious approach, equip the best you can w/ non-metallic equipment. YOU DONT NEED TO PREPARE TO LEVEL UP FOR THIS. Nothing in Final Fantasy IV requires leveling up (or FF2US), I play the original FFIV (J) version w/ translation patches. Even though FFIV is the "hard type" dont waste your time ever leveling up, as the game progresses your levels will elevate to the appropriot levels. The key to this game is knowing your Final Fantasy (as dorky as that sounds) but if youre a normal fan of the game you will KNOW how to decimate your opponent. Keep HIGH ITEM LEVELS.. dont WALK FOR MONEY to get them, but gradually build them with spare change throughout towns and castles after quests and arrives to new areas after spending on more important equipment. Second key point is, you shouldnt aim to CRUSH THE GAME, seek challeneges within your battles and with those challeneges come excellent level ups all the way to the moon segment of the game. You should NEVER have to walk for levels or money in FF4, unless in extreme cases such as this related topic, the Dark Elf segment of the game might require you to walk for a little cash to equip your entire party to cooporate w/ the non-metallic attributes of the cave. MAYBE even when you get Palom and Porom but thats more in the "probably not realm" -------------------- NOT a Final Fantasy VI fan.. omg NOOO |

Simply run from everything in the cave before the barrier is lifted, since your weapons (with the exception of Yang's Fairy Claw which is found later in the cave) can't do much damage to the enemies. For the Dark Elf, equip everyone with Ruby Rings (protects against Piggy), and equip Cecil's Legendary Sword. Cast Berserk on Cecil or have him use a Bacchus's Wine to Berserk him, and watch the Dark Elf get creamed.
Then, after you can equip your metallic weapons and armor again, you'll notice the difficulty of the monsters in the area has significantly dropped. -------------------- |

I'm guessing everyone missed my post or the not-so-well-hidden trick in it. So here it is again.
The "field" effect only applies to characters wearing metallic equipment when they enter a battle. Not during the battle. Though it's tedious, if you unequip metallic weapons and shields before battle and re-equip them IN battle, you can fight freely with them (though there's nothing you can do about your armor and accessories.) Once you get to the Dark Elf, you're pretty much free to do as you please Possible spoilers: highlight to view since the field is lifted before the real battle starts. -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

Buy the cheapest clothes and staffs or bows from Trioa for everyone to equip, Cid's wooden mallet isn't magnetic. When you get in the cave, just run from all the monstrers, you could update your bestiary later.
WARNING!MEAGA SPOILER!!!!!!!lol okays u've been warned. Possible spoilers: highlight to view Edwin will get up (though injured) during the dark elf battle when the party has died (it always will) and play his harp, then Cecil should equip his sword of legend because the magnetic field will be weakened. You only need like 5 attacks from Cecil to win because the magnetic damage is around 1000-1700 -------------------- "Damnation" -Kain "Damnation" -Edge "You spoony bard!" -Tellah "aftah wee blo dis plase up, it aint gonna be nuthin buta hunka junk" -Barret (i give you credit for restating the obvious) "Looks like golden shiny wire of hope to me." -Barret "Sit your ass down in that chair and drink some goddamn tea" -Cid "SHEEEERA!" -Cid |

You know, Cecil with a bow isn't all that shabby, nor is Cid with his wooden hammer. So long as you can find some enemies to use Psyche(Osmose) on for Old Man McNoMP, the magic should do what your attackers can't. You could even just Osmose Cecil over and over. The hell do you need cure 1 for? Thanks to the the cave atmosphere, you might even be running in to some flying enemies, which are weak to the bow attacks.

They pretty much set up the cave to be extremely doable with the best non-metallic equipment you can buy. If you focus on flying things or things with elemental weaknesses (and use the right arrows; I'm almost positive you can buy ice/fire/lightning arrows at this point) for Cecil and pound stuff with Cid and Yang, you'll be doing plenty of damage. I never used Tellah's magic offensively except for boss fights, but I guess that would make it even easier. -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

i think tellahs magic was like a cheat on boss fights, especially elemental lords, i remember i killed scarmiglione or cagnazzo in 5 or so turns lol.
