I like Lore's versatility, and I like Gau's extremely large repertoire of skills as much.

i dislike rages because i loose controll of my character. thats why i generally don't use berserkers either. with lores, at least i can controll what is happening, and there is a good variety. i didn't use strago much, but at the end of the game when i had to, he was much more useful than Gau.

i agree with you death penalty because ex: i like to wear the wall riing (which cast reflect) and if i activate a rage that may cast cure, it will reflecft and instead of healing me it will heal the enemy... very disturbing

You have to remember though, Rage lets you use high-end spells like Warlock/Pearl and SrBehemoth/Fire3 for 0 MP. Occasionally an enemy will absorb that skill and Gau becomes a liability (I'm lookin' at you EvilOscar...), but it's never anything too severe. If your other guys are strong enough you should be able to kill most enemies even if they get the occasional healing.

Rage, definitely. Early on, it makes Gau an offensive powerhouse, and later it turns him into a tank. Not to mention that Lore is beaten by Magic.

Rage. The best berserk there is. Stray Cat, Templar, Brawler rule. And you can pick a rage accordingly to enemy, so it's not just mindless hacking away.

I don't really think you can compare Rage to berserk, because as SilverMaduin said, you can pick a rage depending on the enemy you are facing.

about not having control of your character, which actions do you give the ones you do control? They are either developed towards attacking or casting magic, meaning you won't be using more than one command (2 once in a while, if you're an item type of person).

So even though you can control them, the things they do are very limited - and you might aswell have Gau do that limited thing in a stronger version without you having to tell him to do it all the time.

Plus, Lores are pretty limited in their power. GrandTrain is pretty much a poor man's Ultima (it rarely deals more than 5000 damage) and Quasar is the same thing except weaker. Gau can use third level magic (I highly recommend you take the time to encounter SrBehemoth on the Veldt) w/out spending MP (which he has little use for in general). And it's stronger

I like the retainer rage because Gau uses Shock, General Leos attack and because you see a lot of spells you cant obtain through Magic or Lore. They shouldve given Strago about 8-10 more Lore skills IMO. S.Cross, N.Cross..etc.

In this instance, I would take Strago over Gau. I only say this because I hate the fact that I lose control of Gau. I'm not really that big of a fan of Strago, but at least I get to control his actions.

Same here. But for me, Gau's Stray Cat rage was quite useful at the beginning of the game. Afterwards, though, I didn't use either of them.

I don't really use neither lores nor rages, but if we're talking about my personal feelings, I'd rather use Strago than Gau. You keep control of him, you can use items with him and change strategy if needed. Gau is strong, but his rages are annoying to get and have to be used wisely or will become a disaster.

Also, Strago is cooler.

I never used either character terribly too much. Overall, I'd say Gau is somewhat better. Strago's Lores while controllable, lack any real battle power mid-late game. Gau is fairly balanced through the game and once you Leap into a few good enemies, I found that when I did use him, I used the same 3 or 4 Rages all the time.

Although I can pick a specific rage that I want to use for a certain battle, I still don't like being unable to control a party member. I'd rather use Strago (Grand Train ftw), but honestly, I avoid both. Travelling around collecting rages and lores just isn't very fun to me.

Yeah, I'm of the group that prefers a character you control. And I love Blue Magic, so Strago is my choice.

Strago all the way. Collecting all of Gau's Rages takes too long to complete. Blue Magic is also more straight forward and useful (Big Guard, Healing Wind, Aqua Rake, etc.).

The comparison doesn't do Gau justice. IMO Gau and Strago are on opposite ends of the good/bad spectrum. A couple of the best rages alone beats Strago's entire skillset.

If you need Lores at all, Gau can do everything Strago does, only much earlier, and for free.

I don't use either of them unless I have to. I'm also indifferent to Rages and Lores, they both have their good and bad points that everyone here has already pointed out.

Gau. Because he's to darn cute not to love. heart.gif

Actually, I love the Rage ability. It's great to be able to cast high-level spells early in the game and VERY high-level spells later in the game, for free.

I don't mind at all the uncontrollability or having to go Rage hunting. (Rage hunting is FUN!!! XD) Gau is definitely one of my favorites.

Hm... it's a bit troubling that 31% of us don't even use either of these characters. I forget who said it, but it is true that once you find the rages you like, you tend to stick with them. For me it's Stray Cat, SrBehemoth and brown MagRoader mostly.

I usually avoid both of them. In my opinion the acquisition of both of those skills is tedious, and when you get them their effects in battle are a little underwhelming. In my experience a normal attack or magic spell is almost always superior to a Rage or Lore technique.

Though I must admit, shortly after you get Gau it is helpful to use the Rage that allows him to throw stones for about 1,000 damage to each opponent.

Both Skills are pretty cool. I like Lore because i can control my character. But it's true that Gau's skillis very very usefull sometimes. Just the rigth rage in the rigth place...

I didn't use much of either. Why would I want to spend time scouring the world for lores and grinding the veldt for rages when i could just aurabolt someone... or throw stuff at them.
