I recently got the sword "Ragnarok" and was very pleased whith it. As you all know, you can trade it for a sword called "Illumina" at the colosseum. What should I do ? Trade "Ragnarok" for "Illumina" or should I keep it ? Which one of these swords are best ?

Illumina is, after Atma Weapon, the best sword of the game. Whenever I choose to have Ragnarok as a sword, I always bet it at the Colosseum : Illumina has greater power, greater stat boosts, and it can cast Pearl. Definitely a must have.

Yes, I'd go with Illumina. Better stat boosts, Pearl...yup. Better save your game before you go betting, though, in case you lose.

Doesn't ragnarok randomly cast flare though?

Yes, it does. I think Pearl is a little better, or at least as good as Flare. Flare is a little overrated, really.
By the way, if you want to keep both swords. Take the sword instead of the esper at Narshe. Then bet it for Illumina at Colosseum. Then steal another Ragnarok from the statue Doom in Kefka's Tower. Presto! No need to decide between them! ![]() -------------------- People say I'm a slow learner, but I type fast! |

Attack Power - Illumina wins. By the numbers, it's a tie, with both giving auto 255. However, I find that Illumina continually puts up more damage on the enemies.
Stat boosts: Vigor - Tie, both give +7 Speed - Illumina wins. It has +7 to Ragnarok's +3. Stamina - Tie, both give +7 Magic - Tie, both give +7 Evasion - Illumina wins. In both magic and physical evasion it gives +50%, while Ragnarok gives +30% for both. Special Effects - Illumina wins. Both swords give constant criticals by burning your MP (which is why I usually get the Magicite instead), but Illumina has a random cast of Pearl which is more useful than a random Flare. Flare may be able to pierce defenses, but it's less powerful and there are many enemies that are weakest against holy power. So between the two, Illumina is undisputed champion. No doubt in my mind that bet's a good one as long as you win it. -------------------- My soul is bound to the Mistress of the Afterlife, and my fealty is to her always. What I do is I get two illuminas by getting the Raganrok from the Godess and then betting it for another Illumina.

I've never really understood what's so great about being able to steal weapons from the final boss. Doesn't the fact that you're at the final boss when you steal them kinda preclude getting much use out of them?

Well, you can technically equip weapons and armor during battle. Â Simply wait until the desired character's turn, scroll all the way to the top of the Items menu, press up, and mix and match as you see fit. That isn't exactly intuitive, though. Â A far more practical application for stealing weapons from Final Bosses would be to use them as Throwing weapons for your resident ninja. Â (Shadow, in this case.) Â Because the weapons you can steal are typically quite powerful, a timely use of the Throw skill can be a real lifesaver in a tough fight. Unless of course you meant that it's pointless simply because you can't use the weapon for more than one major battle, in which case I'd have to agree with you. -------------------- "I always have a quotation for everything - it saves original thinking." ~Dorothy L. Yeah, that's what I meant. If you're trying to decide which cool weapon you want, getting one at the last minute isn't much consolation. -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

True, the Illumina is good, but since it casts pearl, it's an element a monster may absorb. At least with Ragnarok, it casts flare, which is not an elemental attack, so there are no worries about monsters absorbing it's attack.

I never thought about that. Does anyone know which enemies absorb Pearl? On another note, can't you trade Illumina back in for Ragnarok if you change your mind? -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

id go with Ragnarok just because its more dependable. true pearl might be better but at least u can rely more on flare. flare will most always hurt, but pearl could be absorbed by some monsters.

No, you can't get your Ragnarok back. Betting the Illumina gets you a Scimitar back, which is a Very Bad Trade.
Of the Kefka's Tower baddies, only three absorb Pearl that I know of. They are the Statue Goddess, an Evil Oscar, and one of those guys on the third stage of the Tower Of Monsters. Kefka himself actually hates Pearl a lot more than Flare. (This has been battle-tested using a morphed Terra at about level 40.) I don't know all the Pearl-absorbers in the game, though. -------------------- My soul is bound to the Mistress of the Afterlife, and my fealty is to her always. I figure this would be obvious. Illumina boosts stats higher (especially speed) and casts Pearl over Flare. Some people might not think this is quite good, but I tested Illumina's random Pearl and was astounded that it took about 2x more damage than just casting the spell Pearl. Much more powerful than Ragnarok and looks cooler on the battle screen. And if you have complaints about enemy absorption, look at the ratio of enemies WEAK vs. Pearl as opposed to enemies absorbing Pearl.

When it comes down to it, I just liked having the option of turning an enemy into an item more than using a weapon that just attacks and randomly casts a spell I can already learn from Espers acquired in the game.
Covert's into Strikers, Critic's into Safety Bit's.. Sometimes the items aren't good, but using the Rag or Ill swords is just attacking your enemy. Nothing to it, 'cept a different graphic for the sword. |

Illumina has higher magic evade, and magic evade is the single best stat in the game. Magic evade counts for both magic and physical evade, due to a glitch in the programming, so at 128%, all blockable attacks will be evaded. Illumina is much better than Ragnarok.
