Well, since I've finished the Golden Sun games, I've gone back to just playing Nethack over and over again (although I still haven't ascended any characters; they tend to run into problems and die to things like gargoyles, ettin mummies, uncursed scrolls of earth, starvation, black puddings, werejackals, and angry shopkeepers). But I was thinking of expanding my gaming repertoire a bit further, and so I looked around my games and thought about getting into something new. The various possibilities are listed in the poll above.
For reference, I haven't listed any games that I don't have access to even if they're on my "you should play these sometime" list--these include Final Fantasy Tactics, Der Langrisser, the Wild ARMs series, etc.. Here's brief descriptions of the games: La-Mulana: a very difficult castletroid game starring an Indiana-Jones-like archaeologist adventuring through ancient ruins to solve a puzzle. Phantasy Star I: well, I'm not really familiar with the PS series, but it seems to be a science-fiction-fantasy setting. I started playing this game, but the gameplay got tedious after a bit. (And Alice dies easily as well.) Lufia: I started this game, but I've never gotten past the scene near the opening where the girl and boy hang out in the field. By the way, Lufia's theme ranks among one of the most beautiful videogame music tracks I've ever heard. Terranigma: an often-praised but not-often-mentioned RPG for SNES. I don't know much about it other than that. Harvest Moon: SNES farm simulation game, for what I know. Final Fantasy I: enough said. I would be playing the NES version, for anyone who wonders. Parodius: Konami's Gradius-quality (i.e. really darn good) and Gradius-style horizontal space shooters, with a twist: it's a complete parody of Gradius, featuring enormous excesses of Moai heads, penguins, and other strange things (such as a walking clown robot, a duck battleship, and a pufferfish). I've played the NES Parodius, but not any other ones. (Trivia: I like playing Takosuke the octopus the most.) Nethack: one of the oldest games still actively in development, Nethack (now at version 3.4.3) is a turn-based RPG/adventure game where your character ventures into the Dungeons of Doom to retrieve the Amulet of Yendor and sacrifice it to your god on the Astral Plane. Highly difficult and loaded with immense amounts of replay value, the game's best known feature among non-players is the graphical use of ASCII characters (although more "advanced" graphics are available if you want them). Final Fantasy III: rare NES games whose only English version was a fan-translation until the release of the DS version (which is kinda different from the original). I've played the NES version up to the point where you need dragoons to beat a certain boss. [i]Replay[/b]: I've been thinking about either going through one of i90east's FFVI Expert Versions, or even playing through FF4a. Or I could refresh my memory of FFV by playing through that again (and besides, I love that game). I could also refresh my memory of Earthbound by playing through that again. Or I could even pursue one of the Pokémon games that I've tabled in the past--I'll probably play Pokémon Crystal if that's what I do. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. I would heartily recommend Terranigma. I particularly enjoyed the storyline, and the game length is fairly comparable to other SNES RPG's. It deserves to be recognized along with the other great RPG's from that era, in my opinion.

I'd say FF1. If you have the patience for it, it's a great game, and playing anything on the NES feels great.

Terranigma's a pretty good game - it's also amusingly one of the very few games that saw a Japanese and European release, but never a US release. I'm not a big fan of Harvest Moon, and Lufia I is pretty much garbage compared to Lufia II. FF III is very, very good, but I'd say Terranigma's a bit better. As for the other games, I haven't played any of them.

i'd say finish the FFIII. i can't stand playing more than 2 RPGs at once, i get the stories confused/forget things, so that'd be my personal choice.

Quote (leilong @ 1st September 2007 15:17) Lufia. Lufia : RPG :: America : Apple Pie Everyone who hasn't, should. I love Lufia II to death, but the first game is really just an exhibition of RPG cliches, badly dated visuals, and clumsy controls. Some of the characters were interesting, but there are a ton of better games with interesting characters out there. To make matters even better, Lufia II is a prequel to the original, so you aren't missing anything by jumping right into the best game in the series. Yeah, again I must re-emphasize: go with Terranigma, FF III, or Dragon Warrior IV. Why Dragon Warrior IV? Because it's awesome, and it's getting a remake soon, so it's in style at the moment. Best RPG on the NES. -------------------- |
