Changed my mind. I love Dark Arts now. Dark Flare and Doomsday are very powerful spells, but the only downside is that it's a bit too powerful and it made my next visit with Neo Exdeath a cakewalk. So I say, Dark Arts. But I can't change my vote sad.gif

It usually gets grouped in Black/Red/Blue/Green/Time, but I always lead off with status-effect magicks. Generally, I'd go for the mixed-bag-of-tricks that is Blue (E. Skill heart.gif) but whichever skillset carries the nasty impairments is the one I end up using the most.

I voted for White Magic. Give me tanks backed up by healers any day. There are usually a few bosses in each game that are so resistant to physical attacks that you have to use the black magic on them, but White Magic will see the party through that insanely long dungeon to get to the boss in the first place without bankrupting you and setting up the potion seller for retirement in the process.

I like summon magic because it does take a lot of effort to summon creatures from another world. Plus, you can heal yourself and hurt the enemy at the same time with the Sylph summon in FF4 with Rydia and the others. Plus, summons can damage an entire party of monsters which is good as well.

i chose time magic, since my party is usually comprised of heavy hitters, or at least physical attackers, i like to have the time magic ability to speed them up.

I think Time magic's the best, just because it gives a great advantage and can really turn the tide on a battle. Not hitting enough? Haste everyone. Need more time to heal up? Slow the enemy.

I love me some White magic. Why? Because after about 4 hours into any given Square/Enix game, you almost never need items anymore.

Time magic is useful for Haste (and Quick and such effects where it applies.) In whole, everything looks awesome, but is overrated. Here's why IMHO:

1. I've never played a Final Fantasy where I couldn't just muscle my way through most enemies without the assistance of magic (spare White magic!) or just use some reusable technique.

2. I've never seen any games where it was remotely effective to take a battle turn to cast blind/slow/stop/confuse/etc. (except in very rare instances) because it either WILL NEVER HIT or the mitigation was moot. sad.gif

3. Or, my favorite of all, even when geared for magic, my characters would do as much, or MORE damage with just standard attacks.

Of course, few exceptions, being early on just to have the ability to multistrike or Summons that do good damage until about 1/4 through the game. Once again, just my opinion. happy.gif

White Mage is essential, and Mighty Guard is very useful, but I still like Black Magic... and Quick is very important, too...
I'll still go with Black Magic though.

I've always liked Red Magic, being versatile in two of the magical arts is sweet. Doublecast is a plus, too, and Red Mages aren't bad in physical combat either.

Time Magic, based primarily on my experience with FFT. Reminds me of the flavor text on a favorite Magic card of mine (solely for the text, in fact): Mastery is achieved when 'telling time' becomes 'telling time what to do.' Who wouldn't like that kind of power?

To VaporSnake: I agree that many status attacks are of little use. There are some situations, though, that I find them quite worthwhile:

1) The enemy is too powerful to take down before they make a move, regardless of whether or not the status inducing character contributes to damage. Here, taking the 25% chance (or higher, or lower) is a "may as well, if it hits, it might help, if it doesn't, no real loss" situation.

2) If success yields a high enemy casualty rate: In FFT, calculating Faith followed by Petrify can easily halve (or better) the number of foes in two moves, as opposed to three or more with Holy, depending on the enemy. Those with immunity can then be dealt with using more traditional means.

3) If there is a high success rate: Two monsters come to mind; the T-Rex style monster from FFVIII, and the aerial monsters from X. In the case of the former, it was highly vulnerable to sleep, which made it far easier to defeat than through conventional means. Similarly, in the case of the latter, their vulnerability to Blinding allowed easy reduction of their accuracy to the point where they rarely hit, thus negating their advantage of being out of normal attack range and allowing characters to whittle them down.

4) It weakens the enemy: There's a tactic listed in the Final Fantasy V walkthrough here on CoN that makes defeating Bahamut a walk in the park. I'm sure there are other instances of a status eliminating the enemy's ability to use their game-endingly powerful skills.

That's just on statuses, don't get me started on the rest. biggrin.gif

I voted for Dark Arts, or Arcane Magic. I've been playing Final Fantasy XII lately and some of the spells from that category have been really helpful late in the game, most notably Bubble, Syphon and Darkga.

Of course, White Magic is essential for every FF game but it's not my favorite type of magic.

Yes, Ultima is white magic in FFDawn of souls: FFII. White wizard dude, dies to give you ultima. then ends up learning it in the afterlife! how ironic. I prefer summoning, as there are healing summons, there are offensive summons, and there are crap summons. healing such as asura in ffiv, offensive, like bahumat in everything, and crap like chocobo in everything except ffvi.
