ok simple question here: which FF's are better, the new or the old? i divided it right down the middle, six to each side, because the first six are 2D and there is also a console gap between 6 and 7. i am interested to see how this turns out. please post your reasoning as well.
though 6 is one of my favorites, 7-10 are as well, and 8 is my favorite FF. so, i started off by voting for the newer FF's. Old, I suppose. I mean, I like and dislike games on both sides, and my four favorite FF games are two old and two new, so I'm pretty even, but I've gone back and replayed FF IV and VI at least four or five times each; for me, the only new FF game that comes close to that level of time invested is Tactics.
So, bottom line, I like both, but old has a slight edge over new. -------------------- |

Gotta go with newer. I like 7 and 9 and I absolutely love Tactics. On the other hand, 6 is the only older game I really care for.

...I honestly like the newer games better. They had more inventive customization and battle systems IMO, and a lot of the storylines in the newer games were a lot better than those of the old games.
-------------------- FFIVDS looks awesome, right? Especially the character scans. I mean, look at that CGI scan of Yang. You see it and you just think...badass. And then you look at his polka-dot pants, likely stolen from a Dr. Seuss book. And then you just...shiver. |

Im gonna go ahead and say Older FF's, mainly because of Final Fantasy 4. I played more of the older ones than the new ones, even though I really like Final Fantasy 7, a bit of 8, and what I remember of it, 9, the past ones to me were just more uhh replayable in my opinion, atleast when I beat it right away.

I suppose Tactics is in the "new" generation if you're splitting it down the center, so that one. And even though I never really beat any of the older ones (VI on down), I like them a lot more than any of the ones I have beaten, sans IX.

Although I absolutly love FFIX, have to go with old. I love FFIII, FFIV, FFV, and FFVI very very much. I like FFII and I too. I don't really hate any of the old games. On the newer side.. I like... IX... X.... a small portion of VII... Yeah that didn't work out very well.
So old. |

I only played FFIV, FFV, FFVI, FFVII, FFVIII, FFIX and a bit of FFX. And I totally love FFIV, FFVI and FFIX. I really like FFV. FFVII was so boring I stopped playing. FFVIII was fun to play, but I have never completed it and, from I heard, the rest of the game wasn't really... smart... A didn't really play a lot of FFX, but I got annoyed every time Tidus had to go underwater. And pretty much every time he opened his mouth. So I choose the old. All the way.

I didn't vote.
Reason: I like the older FF's for gameplay and tougher bosses I like the newer FF's for more complexity and better stories / graphics. -------------------- All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Broccoli to die. |

Tough call. I voted for new, but that's because I'm a little biased as FFVIII is my favorite game and FFIX has my favorite FF villain.
When I judge games, I'm a story/character kinda' guy and both the old and the new have great storylines and characters. The biggest thing I love about FFs I-VI are the medieval settings and memorable characters, however, I've never played any older games from beginning to end, not even near-end. So, I may be a bit biased in my decision, but I gonna' have to vote for the newer games, especially considerin' the fact that FFVIII introduced me to the entire FF franchise. -------------------- "Thought I was dead, eh? Null vote.
I think that the older ones for me were more challenging (or maybe I'm deranged), so I like them for that and the generally good gameplay and graphics. (Mind you, I loved the plotlines of IV, V and VI. Especially VI.) But the new ones have better graphics and more intricate complex details (like FFVIII - I didn't get the Junction system at first!) but I thought were easier in terms of progressing through the game (like FFVII - I never died at a boss or enemy, which I occasionally do in other FF's). So I just couldn't decide. |

Well, the newer FFs have FF8 in their ranks, so I'd say "old" would be my answer.

Null vote. Old has 2, 3 and 4, while new has 7, 9 and 12.

I voted newer because in the newer category I like VII, IX, X, and XII. I've also seen a little bit of FFVIII and it didn't seem that bad. In the older category I like V and VI, and I haven't played I, II, or III.
Playing the newer games, you have to think more. With materia, you have to watch how much HP you're losing and how each one changes your stats. With junctioning, you have the choice of junctioning different spells to your stats to make them better (from what I understand anyway). On IX, when you equip accessories, they can raise your stats when you level up. The sphere grid makes you decide what you want to raise each time you get levels. The licenses make you choose what weapons, armour, magic, and stats your characters get. On the older games, mostly it's just learning spells as you level. V has you choosing jobs to make your people learn spells. VI has the espers, which can raise stats a tiny bit and teach you spells. -------------------- Why, hello guys! I think I'd have to go with the newer games here.
Of the old-school games FFVI is really the only one out of the older category that I could play over and over again and never get sick of them, maybe FFIV and FFIII (DS -- so does that still count as old-school?) to a lesser extent. The newer games have more games that I always find myself playing whenever I'm bored and need an FF fix. FFIX (favorite game!!), FFVII, FFVIII, and FFX, I could definitely play more than once and not get tired of them. FFIX and FFX in particular. |

I voted Old. I'm assuming Tactics is being left out here, and we're only talking about the numbered games.
The first game was my first RPG, so I tend to look back at it with rose-colored glasses. I realize the problems it has, but frankly, I don't care! The second one I never actually finished, though I own it for PSX. The leveling system just doesn't appeal to me, and it seems set up for munchkin-like behavior. FF3 started the whole 'changing jobs' thing, which I think is one of the better systems the series ever saw. Plus, the remake is spiffy. FF4 is awesome. Great characters, party members getting killed off, memorable story, a decent level of difficulty (on the original release, at least...), and pretty new 16-bit graphics. FF5 brought back job switching and character customization, so it gets a heart. Aaaaand, FF6 is pretty much everything an RPG should be (minus a job system, but that's okay... in this case.) Each member of the party is memorable, the primary villain actually SUCCEEDS in his dastardly plan, the graphics were top-notch for the hardware, most of the locations were actually fun to drudge through, the Esper system was unique, the fact that there are so MANY good characters... need I go on? As for the newer games... FF7 was pretty good, FF8 was terrible, FF9 was probably the best of this generation, FFX I started off liking but ended up switching my opinion midway through, FFX-2 never played, and FF12 I really liked. I remember thinking halfway through FF12 that it'd be much better with a job system... and lo-and-behind! Square releases a version with one! ...but not in America. Sigh. -------------------- With the lights out It's less dangerous |

There were crappy old games back then just as much as there are crappy games now, but comparing Final Fantasy retrospectively, I'd say the older ones (1-6) are definitely still a true spirit to the series. They were your common everyday RPGs you'd have no problem figuring out how a battlesystem works, until you try something like FFVIII, FFX-2, or FFXII.
Plot-wise, they're all the same. The older ones were mostly just "save the crystals and fight the villain at the very end of a dungeon", and the newer ones readapted to it by having "evil empires that destroy humanity because they just want more gold in their filthy rich pockets". So to stand by my own opinion, I'd go for the older ones. Atleast they were the epitome of real role-playing games, and amount of depth put into plot or characters: to me does not matter at all, as long as it gets me interested and motivated to play. |

New. I don't play many games at all nowadays, and while I don't have much of an inclination to play the older games now, I still play through some of the newer ones occasionally. Admittedly, that might be attributable to the fact that I've played the older games a lot more and know them a bit better, or possibly because I played the newer games first and tend to get all nostalgic over them.
I do think they're the better games, though. Character development, storylines, all a lot more involving since FF7. Well, except FF12. I didn't even finish 12, personally. Got about 16 hours in and didn't feel the slightest attachment to any of the characters. I might give it another try one day, but I wasn't keen on it. |

Avoids Vote
Both !! Because both of the Old and New Final Fantasies are both really cool and great games. Because FFIV had great characters and storyline and FFVI is one of the best Final Fantasies out there, while Final Fantasy VII was great, and so was FFVIII FFIX and FFX. Though XII hasn't been so great so far though.. This post has been edited by Starfish on 10th September 2007 04:42 |

I voted old because of V and VI, but VIII and IX are amongst my favourites. The
dividing line for me was FFT, though; while it appeared on a 'new' system, I think it's soul--from the sprites-based engine (granted, on a 3D map) and V's class system--are all hailing from the old-school. -------------------- Putting the A's in W lm rt: A11smart, Jobclass: Retailer. |

I've gotta say, the oldies. Now, granted, I'm a Nintendophile, so I don't see alot of the Newer ones. However, if going by new we're judging FFVII and onward, I have to say I'm not impressed by what I do see. FF VII and VIII were just sort of... anticlimactic. FFVI rocked my world, and compared to that... With it's underdeveloped graphics and questionable translation... FVII just didn't measure up.
