I couldnt pick. I mean, ya know Kefka was so much more hilarious than Sephiroth, yet Sephiroth was so much more awesome! I loved Kefka's crazed rants, and funny comments about the prtyies saying he is goin down."You sound like chaptersin a self-help book."-Kefka, Isn't that classic? They're both just so evil and equally crazy!

I have to vote for Kefka. Sephiroth had that cool anime guy with white hair thing going for him, and he burned down that town and almost got rid of two of the more annoying characters in the game. (Okay, I guess Tifa beats Aeris, but still...)
Sephiroth was just kinda lame, though. He didn't have Kefka's charisma. -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

This was a very tough decision, but at last, I decided that Kefka was the winner of the day. Sephiroth is very cool and mysterious, but at the same time he's acting so strange. Speaking a lot of gibberish, killing people for no reason and then he doesn't kill people he would earn something from seeing dead. Also, his plans and beliefs were always a mystery for me, I could never understand what he meant.
Kefka, on the other hand, has a much more clear sake. He wants to destroy everything. He is THE carnation of evil. I have never seen anyone that creepy in an RPG game before. He is really a psychopath. No emotions for other people. Misery is the only thing he feeds on. Square did a wonderful job with him. ![]() That's the thing with Kefka. He is a normal human, just like you and me. We could be Kefka, any of us. That's what's so scary. However, Sephiroth never seemed to be like that for me. That's why I vote for Kefka. -------------------- People say I'm a slow learner, but I type fast! |

Kefka.
Sephiroth, I felt, was one of the better bad guys in the FF series (he doesn't just stick his ass into the story near the end of the game ![]() With Kefka, the party ends up running into him more often than trying to chase him, and he's already plotting some evil plot of his own. (South Figaro, Doma, Narshe, Sealed Gate, etc...) So my vote goes with Kefka. |

Yeah, one of the things I hated about Sephiroth was that all you did was run around after him. He almost never came up! He seemed really cool at first--the bloody trail in Shinra was great, and the flashback is probably my favorite part of the game--but he never really showed up to do anything until way later. I have to go with Kefka partly because I prefer the designs of Amano over Nomura. I guess I feel that Kefka is more charismatic as well. I am also in the camp that believes Sephiroth is kinda cliche.

They are both incredible characters, but I pick Sephiroth.  My reason isn't simple so I'll describe them both and try (and fail) to make it fast.
Kefka takes the existentialist view that existence has no essence as a directive to turn the world and peoples' lives into a meaningless pile of rubble, and he uses his immense "Hate" as fuel.  He thinks it's funny to murder and make people miserable so in my view he's crazy, and craziness is confusion.  The things he does and way he acts both evoke a strong hatred from me, but he's not the one with whom I'm more impressed.  Sephiroth is the Cabalistic concept that all of the power in the universe is contained in.  There are three main Sephiroth representing man, woman, and the love that exists between them, and each Sephiroth is again divided into three.  While Seph isn't all of the world's power, he definitley is a higher power.  He's a combination of Jenova's strength, Hojo's mind, and Lucretsia's beauty.  Seph's not crazy, he's a partly non-human being who wants to evolve his mother's behavior of killing a race and gaining power into killing a planet and gaining more power.  So he's the representative of a species from outer space that wants to, in essence, eat us and make FF7 a xenophobic story.  That makes him a cool character, but my reason for choosing him is a combination of that and this other fact: at one point Tifa asks if Seph's plan of using meteor to absorb all of the spirit energy will work, and someone else (I forget who) says "I don't know."  No one in the entire game knows if it will work so what you're fighting against is the consequence of someone's mere attempt at power.  Meteor could hit and people would die and lifestream would rush into the crater, but it might not go into Sephiroth.  For me that adds the elements of real life and chance to Seph's actions whereas Kefka is more simple: kill, laugh, kill, laugh, kill, laugh.  I think that the reality of Seph's actions makes his threat more frightening and his efficiency more (in a disturbing way) admirable.  Thanks if you read all of this. Sephiroth isn't even the main baddy in his game.
Kefka is a video game legend far surpassing Sephiroth. I can't believe people dislike his laugh. Sephiroth burns a town, Kefka torches the planet. Sephiroth kills an innocent girl. Kefka kills a righteous general, his emperor, and an entire town that includes Cyan's wife and son. -------------------- What would Zorro do?-Homer Simpson |

Wow. I'm so glad somebody has finally touched on the origins of Sephiroth's name. And that's a great theory, to boot. Kudos! ![]() I think I'm going to have to go with Kefka. Here are my thoughts on the matter, which may or may not give you some insight as to why I chose him: The thing is, I was never really sure if Kefka was human or not. It seems like he started out as one, but by the end of the game, especially given his "Fallen Angel" incarnation in the final battle, I wasn't so sure. Sephiroth was at least given a definite background, which didn't make him any less of a villain, but it left me wondering. It seemed to me that Kefka always had this incredible potential for destruction that he was constantly holding inside of himself, and he was using Gestahl for his own purposes all along. I almost got the impression that he had even -planned- on getting himself thrown in prison. There was a lot of interesting power-play between him and Gestahl, as well as between him and the party members. It seemed like he was toying with them the whole time, taunting them, dropping little hints and clues here and there, waiting for just the right moment to drop the proverbial bomb. At the same time, Kefka is unpredictable, while Sephiroth has this icy-cold, calculating steadiness to his actions. They're both completely out of their minds, but Sephiroth's madness is more controlled, seething just below the surface. Sephiroth made incredibly efficient use of fear; when he summoned Meteor, everybody in the world knew it was coming, and all they could do was sit and despair and wait for the end. Truly a masterful stroke of evil. Kefka, however, pounced without warning, and when he hit, he hit hard. He didn't give anyone a chance to fight back--he used the tactics of an underhanded, sneaky bastard, and there wasn't anything anyone could do about it. Again, leaving everyone else in the world with this helpless, defeatist attitude when he finally did come to power. So I'm rambling now. But my basic point is that while I do adore Sephiroth and recognize his greatness as a heartless villain, I'm voting for Kefka. He really did make me hate him. Oh yeah, and I love Kefka's theme song too. It's so grandiose, while being whimsical at the same time. ![]() |

Regarding Kefka's past: I recall reading, I believe from a translation of the Japanese manual (or what claimed to be), that he was in fact just a regular human, but was the first to undergo Magitek infusion. The process not being perfected is what turned him into a raving lunatic. Celes got the improved process used on her, and Leo refused.
So he's as much a victim as Sephiroth, in some ways. Presumably he could still have refused, though. Sephiroth had no choice about Jenova. |

This is really interresting : maybe the red marks on his face are aftermaths of the process rather than tatoos (that was my first guess). It brings a new perspective to Kefka : was he that bad before it happened, did he choose to do it to gain more power? I believe in the second guess, since he seems to be obsessed with it ("MORE POWER? I NEED MORE POWER"). |

I think Kefka's the better of the two. It's been debated whether Sephiroth is truly evil, while Kefka is unquestionably (and sometimes shockingly) evil. Kefka seems to be a whole bunch of stereotypes (he's insane, he's an evil clown, he's got a crazy laugh, he wants to destroy things), but somehow he never becomes boring, and still makes me wonder about him. I should also say that I think Kefka is much more "hatable" than Sephiroth, especially since Kefka is so openly and unreasonably vicious and cruel. And then you wonder how so many coincidences all occur in Kefka's favor. Somehow, I find Kefka unbelievable, but I can sort of see how a character like his could exist. He's so crazy, yet so terrifying that you actually are afraid that this might occur in real life (hey, for what I know, it could...).
And Sephiroth doesn't have a laugh like Kefka's. Uwee hee hee hee!!! *sephiroth summons meteor* *kefka destroys meteor with light of judgement* Moderator Edit GMH, note that I merged your topic with an older one EXACTLY like it. Please run a search before posting a topic that might have been done before. Failing to do so just creates more clutter around here and more work for the staff to do. -R51 Edit: I'm sorry about that. I'll check next time. I read through previous posts and have a few thiungs to add. First, as I recall, Sephiroth knows Cloud personally, and knows what he wants from Cloud. Kefka barely knows you only as a hindrance to his rise to power. Kefka is very unpredictable in his actions and probably twists the plot a lot more. And while Sephiroth was calculating, Kefka basically acted on impulse, which makes him even weirder, because you wonder how the heck he succeeded so easily. Then, as somebody mentioned, Sephiroth isn't the main villain in FFVII. Possible spoilers: highlight to view But in FFVI, I'm sure many people thought it was Gestahl until the floating continent incident...sure threw you for a loop there, didn't it? And to that person who said Kefka destroyed an entire town--Kefka destroyed 1.5 towns: Possible spoilers: highlight to view all of Doma (except a servant and Cyan) and the adults of Mobilz. Edit 2: And Kefka's theme is very interesting. It starts out as an apparently light-hearted silly-sounding tune that later gives way for darker and darker shades. From it you get the clear idea that there's more to Kefka than just sillyness and complaining about the emperor. Well, GM Harvey and edge M., it looks like it's coming down to this:
Who's a more intriguing and emotion-inducing character; someone who repeatedly destroys our lives and the precious things in them and the whole time shows how he finds it funny and so invokes in us a passionate hate, or is it a masterly aspiring conquerer of our world who appreciates all of our lives and wants to consume them and in doing so inspires in us a disturbing respect and admiration? Well which one's better? This is what Kefka does to us (quoting GM Harvey) Quote Kefka is so openly and unreasonably vicious and cruel This is what Sephiroth does to us (quoting edge murasame) Quote You can't get better than an insane, invincible, sword weilding maniac with a black coat. Should we value one affect more than the other? This thread makes me appreciate them both more. I still prefer Sephiroth, though. ![]() This post has been edited by Ejoty on 9th December 2003 02:14 -------------------- Get me off this Disciplinary Committee so I can play any FF except for FF8!!! |

wow, as of right now its almost perfectly tied (spehiroth is leading by one vote). Thats acctually really surprising to me because i thought this site was more about old-school Final Fantasys. O well. Both villians were well designed, had good motives for what they wanted to do and had cool costumes. But i picked Kefka mostly because he was uber-evil. He comited henious acts and laughed about it. There isn't anything that can be more evil. Plus he was always mocking your characters and trainling them. The final reason, is that you see his rise to power from right hand man of emporer Gesthal, to demi-god. Thats pretty cool in my book.

I think probably one main reason that Kefka is a better villain than Sephiroth is that you know that Sephiroth is a very skilled SOLDIER, and you know he's really powerful, so you expect a lot from him. But for Kefka, you probably didn't think he was going to rise the way he did, did you? Kefka gets my vote for at least nastily screwing over my expectations.

hmmm...i choose Sephiroth. But now i am not sure why, except that i hate Kefka with a passion. Not because he was evil, rather it was his profound weakness as a character and tacky style of clothing.
Kefka, DID poison the people of doma, and he DID enjoy it. however this is at the order of Gesthal. leo was ordered back by gesthal so that Kefka could do as ordered without the iinterference of Leo. Yes, the emperor arrested Kefka, but that was only a ruse so that your entourage could be manipulated into joining forces with him and thus revealing the location of the goddess statues. The proof to that would be the release of Kefka and the assassination of General Leo. Sephiroth...lost it. He was a man-made organism (much like kefka, huh?) breed for battle. Storywise, Sephy was the most powerful soldier in the world and apparently a really swell guy. That was until he discovered that he was not human, and thats when things turned to s*** (burning of nibelheim, everything else). However, reality for him no longer existed and he was just out to punish those that put him through everything he had been through. But when he was cloned, the information he had was scrambled and he thought that he had to destroy the world to bring it peace, or--something. I havent played the game in ages, so everything is kinda fuzzy after that. The bottom line is that Sephy, although evil to the consensus model of gamers and video game characters alike, maybe wasnt so evil. At least, he did not think himself so, but just wanted revenge against Shinra. Kefka on the other hand, knew of his cruel nature and reveled in it. ...yeah... ![]() -------------------- once you can accept yourself, you will never be alone |

Kefka easily wins my vote. OK, Sephiroth I'll admit is a badass, but it stops about there. Sephiroth kills to accomplish his objective, while Kefka kills, well..because he loves killing. And I love the music always accompanying Kefka, I'll never forget his theme. Is there anyone cooler than Sephiroth? Yeah. Is there anyone more despicable and/or evil than Kefka? Doubt it.

Kefka changes the face of the world but doesnt destroy it, while Meteor would blow up the world. most people overlook the fact that Kefka did something that many bad guys have NEVER accomplished. What was this feat? Kefka, in fact, won.
This is WHY i hate Kefka as a supposed evil character. He won, nobody could strand against him for an entire year! What held him back from blowing everything to oblivian like he seemed so intent upon doing?? GRRRRRRRR! ![]() Possible spoilers: highlight to view Go Sephy! You managed to annoy the living hell outta me bacause now i gotta use somebody else. *gives television the finger*.Sephiroth's one small victory over the heros was that he killed Aeris. Bah! Sephiroth would singlehandedly massacre the Clan of Kefka, and with the lifestream, his magic is easily a match for Kefka's and the statues'. And if he has any trouble with Kefka, he can just control Cloud's mind, and then Kefka has the master of the lifestream AND the badass SOLDIER to worry about. -------------------- *END TRANSMISSION* |
