I'm sorry if there's a topic somewhere that deals with this, but I couldn't find it by reading or by Search.
Okay, so Rydia shows up, sure, but with like... 400 hp!? Golbez just keeps killing her over and over, so that she never has time to summon anything, and Cecil's got Bio on him, and so even if I can manage to raise AND heal Rydia so she's got time to summon, by then Cecil loses a lot of hp and dies, or gets hit by something too fast for me to cure him first, then Rydia dies because she's ALSO got Bio or simply hasn't had time to heal up after being raised before Golbez hits her with something... The fight almost always goes something like: Rydia starts to summon. Golbez hits Rydia with something; Rydia dies. Cecil uses a "Life" on Rydia; Rydia comes back with all of 80 hp, if lucky. Golbez Bios Rydia; Rydia dies. Cecil "Life"s Rydia. Golbez hits Rydia with something; Rydia dies. Cecil "Life"s Rydia. Golbez Bios Cecil. Cecil Cures Rydia; Rydia starts to summon again. Golbez hits Rydia with something; Rydia dies. Cecil "Life"s Rydia. Rydia starts to summon. Cecil Cures himself ( hey, if he dies, who will "Life" Rydia? Golbez hits Rydia with something: Rydia dies. Cecil "Life"s Rydia. Golbez hits Rydia with something; Rydia dies. Cecil "Life"s Rydia. Golbez hits Rydia with something; Rydia dies. Cecil dies from Bio, or Golbez hits him with something and he dies. Something much like that, anyway. Cecil has about 1100 hp, so when I can get someone to heal him between the Calbrena and Golbez fights this isn't a big problem. It's Rydia and her 400 hp madness... so I don't know what to do about that. If she was in my party, I could just go level up, I guess... but she isn't. So can anyone help me? -------------------- Death song, death door, death river awaiting! Rich! |

Errr, you sound as if Rydia and Cecil are the only two characters in your party? Don't you have Rosa, Yang and someone else? If not, there's something wrong with your game. If so, then use Rosa to heal and revive, Cecil and Yang to attack, and Rydia to use Black Magic, rather than summon. If the others are just dead, then revive Rosa first, by the sounds of things she'll have more HP than Rydia and be able to cure and revive better.
Hope that helps. |

Oh. Wow, I feel stupid.
It never dawned on me to revive everybody else. Basically because I was using walkthroughs, and they all just say to have Rydia summon and Cecil attack. I guess I figured if it didn't say to revive the others, then they couldn't be revived at that point. Oh well. My fault for not... thinking for myself, I guess. ;-; Thanks. I'll try this tomorrow. -------------------- Death song, death door, death river awaiting! Rich! |

Quote (dont chocobos rule? @ 18th April 2007 11:41) This definitely makes the battle easier. If you hurry up and give everyone commands, Kain should be able to get airborne. Rydia is the absolute worst person to revive first. -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

You hardly need Rydia. Just keep Cecil alive and play it a bit defensive. So long as you have a reasonable level the fight is a joke. Moreso if you get Kain in there like the above posters mentionned - it'll take mere moments to win the fight.
If you're having troubles, try to get Kain into the fight. If that doesn't work, use Rydia as a healer. Her summons take a while to cast whereas using a healing potion is nearly immediate. But Cecil's usefulness in that fight far outweight hers. She's more of a meatshield than an actual damage-causer. -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

Thanks for the advice.
But everytime I revive somebody, that's the first person Golbez kills. I managed to get Kain to jump, but now that just means all I ever have is Kain and Cecil. Am I doing something wrong? I'm sorry I'm having so many problems... @_@ Basically, this time I had Kain jump, so he was okay. Then Rydia comes in, and she heals Cecil. Then Golbez kills her while Cecil is reviving Rosa. Rosa comes back with 24 hp, so Golbez kills her next. Kain jumped, so when he comes back, Golbez Bios Cecil. Cecil casts Cure2 on nobody, because he was in the middle of casting it on Rosa before she got killed (it went Cecil uses Life; Rosa comes back; Cecil casts Cure2; Golbez kills her; Kain comes back down, etc..). Kain revived Rydia, and she got killed immediately. Cecil revived Rosa again, but she got killed immediately too. Kain jumped, because he's the only one with any hp at this point and I want to keep him from getting hit before I can raise anybody to Cure him, and Cecil is failing at raising anybody, plus he's got Bio, so he's dying. Rosa finally comes back long enough to use a potion, but then she gets killed again anyway, and Cecil dies, and Kain comes back, and instead of jumping again, I figure he should raise some people, but he gets hit with Bolt3 and dies. In short, I suck, and I hate this fight. :\ Maybe I should go level up. But thanks everybody for helping me. -------------------- Death song, death door, death river awaiting! Rich! |

One important strategy in difficult fights is to ignore healing completely. Just focus on keeping people alive. I don't remember there being any attacks that target everyone at once so with Kain and Cecil, you can be sure of always having one person alive - do not waste time healing if you know you're just going to have someone die before you can get off a spell. You're wasting a turn that could be used to attack.
Forget the above if there's some multi-targetting attack - I really don't remember. Golbez doesn't have that much health so if you can get a few turns attack instead of wasting them trying to heal, you're likely to win. Especially with Kain - jump for teh win. He can't be harmed in the air so even if he's the only one left you can survive for a pretty long time if you're lucky. Out of curiousity, what level are you at? I don't think there are any multi-targeting attacks. He hasn't done any, if there are.
So I should just raise and attack, raise and attack, and hopefully that'll work? Except for when Bio is involved? I'll try that! And I actually did go to level up a bit, and so now Kain is 25, Cecil is 22, Rosa is 23 and Yang is 23. -------------------- Death song, death door, death river awaiting! Rich! |

I don't know about ignoring healing completely, but the biggest problem it sounds like you're having is waiting for people to cast their spells. Don't heat with a cure spell; use a potion! Items are used almost immediately, but waiting for magic can screw you over.

Are you making sure Rydia ends up in the back row?

Have you tried actually reviving and healing everyone before the fight begins?
I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure you can bring em back to life out of battle, correct me if I'm mistaken |

Even if you could, it would just be moot anyway, as he kills everyone but Cecil before you can really start fighting. -------------------- "Some fight for justice. I don't remember if Golbez's attacks are all that powerful, but if they're only taking out your near-death characters, keep a full-HP Kain in the party and don't have him jump again, just defend. If you're lucky, Golbez will target Kain and not take out Rosa or Cecil before you can get healing done. Of course it's been a while since I played this game so I might be wrong.

It doesn't hurt to stock up on a bunch of cure2 potions before hand either. Those are pretty powerful, actually. And making sure Cecil and Kain are real strong before Calbrena goes down ensures they have more HP for the coming battle.

More, remember that if you manage to distribute equally the damage among the six dolls and then finish all of them with Yang's kick you won't have to fight Calbrena.
But once again, until you win and Cecil's still alive, the result of the fight doesn't affect Golbez's one. |

I suggest you read the topics that you post in before you actually post. Especially if you being your post with "More", implying that it is a continuation of a previous thought. This thread is not about Calcobrena, but rather about the battle with Golbez.
On-topic: I always bring back Rosa first to help with resurrecting people. I can see where it might be smart to bring back Kain first or soon after, but since I always had a soft spot in my heart for Edge, I bring him back after Rosa. Cecil and Edge attack, Rosa revives, life is good. It is one of the toughest fights I remember, though, so just keep trying. I remember my power shutting off just after I killed Golbez. I got SOOOOOOO UPSET. Bah. -------------------- Is PJ |

Hahahaha. Wow, you're totally right. Hm...I'm trying to think who was in your party at that point, then. Was it Yang? The party was the same the final party except for whoever I had in bottom slot at the time. It was either Yang or Cid, I guess, but I think Yang was in the party at that point.
Either way, my strategy is the same. Resurrect Rosa, then non-Kain big hitter #2, then the others. -------------------- Is PJ |

Simple lesson here, dont rely on someones walkthrough or FAQ, ive found my (and im sure others too) Final Fantasy knowledge to pull me through battles MUCH better than any time-thoughtout FAQ or walkthrough.. to amazing levels, especially in Final Fantasy IV.

wow thats weird i zoomed past that section of the game in like 10 mins...ermmm consider training outside of the castle so all your characters are lv 20ish (maybe lower for Cecil)...otherwise i remember having rydia summon titan and Golbez die.
