...is this game rather difficult? I am on Mt Ordeals and can't even get past Milon. Was I supposed to level up previously? I just finished FFVI for the first time and I thoroughly enjoyed it so I thought I'd play more of the older FF's. FFVI seemed like a breeze in the beginning. In FFIV Im having a hard time just keeping party members alive.

It can be very frustrating on your first playthrough. Leveling up and having the best available equipment is important, but more than anything understanding how the bosses fight and react is very important too.
Which form of Milon are you having trouble on? -------------------- |

The first form. I went back down to mysidia area to level up. Palom and Porum are lvl 13, Tellah is level 21 and Cecil is level 17.

Well, the thing with Milon's first form is that he'll retaliate with Thunder (in addition to casting it regularly). So don't focus on Milon until all of the zombies are dead. They should be easy to deal with Palom or Tellah's fire spells, or, if your version contains it, Palom and Porom's twin magic (which may just blow away all of the zombies at once), although it does take a while to cast.. Then just concentrate on Milon, since Cecil's dark sword can damage him, and healing to recover from his counterattacks.
For his second form, before you fight him, change the battle position of your party members so that Cecil is in the back row, and the mages are in the front. This is because he'll attack you from behind, so when the battle begins your battle formation will be normal. Then just heal as necessary, attacking with Cecil and using your most powerful spells, although watch out since he can poison you (unfortunately, the twins can't use their combination attack when one or more of them suffers from a status ailment from what I remember). -------------------- |

Switching is a bit trickier in FFIV.
With 'Change' you can switch your characters' positions in the party, and with 'Row' you can switch the rows of your characters, i.e. your back row characters will be switched to the front and your front row characters will be switched to the back. In addition, Row switches the number of front/back row slots to 2 or 3. -------------------- |

I didn't find FFIV to be that difficult when I first played it, but then again, I played FFII (SNES), which appears to be reputed as the "semi-easy version".
But FFVI is definitely significantly easier, as you noted. Also, in battle, there's Parry and Row, I think. Parry just puts that character into defense, while Row completely switches the front and back rows, just as in the menu, but be careful if you do that since you'll probably end up putting your mages in front if you do. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. Row is excellent if you're attacked by behind. Which would be the case with Milon, if you have a turn to spare.
I found FF4 to be harder than most FFs of that era. It doesn't have any major abusable tactics like FF6's genji glove/offering combo, and you're a little more restricted in your character use (ie, you can't switch a more beneficial character into your party, unless you're playing the GBA remake 'course.) It's very well balanced though, and shouldn't be too hard to get through even if you're fairly new to RPGs. Take out the zombies first using spells. Cecil is virtually useless here until you thin out the crowds, so have him heal when necessary. It's important to get rid of the undeads because they can drain you, IIRC. Milon alone isn't too hard but he does have some hard-hitting spells. Just keep yourself healed up. Oh, and don't waste time with Twin - that crap takes too long to use, particularly in the GBA remake. In the original SNES version, it's usually much faster though (although that may be my imagination.) After the battle, switch your rows because there's another boss. I forgot if you can go back and save, but if you can, do so right away. You DON'T want to have to fight Milon again if you're caught off-guard in the next fight, which isn't as easy as the first one was. -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

some parts were quite hard for me, including the mount ordeals section. i also found a lot of dificulty in finding my way around the world without a map. i consistantly became lost. however, after training in the lunar core for a while, i was able to beat the game without much difficulty.

I beat Milon and his second form. Now I am going into cave magnes. The Dark Elf completely destroyed me. What sort of level should I be at this point in the game? So far this FF seems to be really concentrating on leveling up.

You really don't need to level up that much throughout the entire game, the exception being several boss fights near the end of the game and the final boss.
First off, the Sword of Legend should be equipped on Cecil, since it does much more damage than the Ancient Sword or Mythril Sword or whatever other sword he may have on. Cecil should constantly be attacking, since he'll definitely do the most damage (Tellah's spells are kinda pointless unless it's for healing in this battle). Cid can also do decent damage. If you Berserk Cecil by using Bacchus's Ciders or just having Tellah Berserk him, both of the Dark Elf's forms will fall in short time. Just make sure to cure the Pig status, and heal as necessary. And of course, after you equip your best weapons and armor again, you'll be able to destroy the random encounters in the cave. I think one of Yang's claws that you find there deals extra damage to some of the enemies in there. This post has been edited by Zeromus_X on 1st July 2007 05:30 -------------------- |

If I'm not wrong, the only battles you must lose are against the Dark Elf,Golbez in the Dwarven Crystal Room and against Kain.

Quote (Bacillodikoch @ 1st August 2007 00:54) If I'm not wrong, the only battles you must lose are against the Dark Elf,Golbez in the Dwarven Crystal Room and against Kain. You only have to lose on the first fight with the Dark Elf and you actually do have to beat Golbez in the dwarf crystal room. -------------------- Kel'Thuzad: She is persistent. Yes but you actually have to...nearly lose it.
It was for discouraging anyone from resetting the game just because Golbez almost killed everyone. And I forgot the Village of Mist, when Dark Cecil and Kain are defeated by rageful Rhydia... |
