The main reasons I am a gamer today are Mario, Mega Man, and Simon Belmont.  I have played pretty much every game in the series, still have the weakness tables memorized for all of the X and Classic games I've played (which is all but X7), and my personal best on beating Mega Man X with 100% items is 44 minutes (the record is 36 minutes).

My favorite Mega Man game is X1, and my other favorites are 2, 3, X3, X4, X8, and V (the NES used numbers, the game boy used Roman numerals).  It's a series that no one should really ignore.

Probably Mega Man IV (GB), even though I never was able to beat it. I would always get to Crystal Man's level and there's this one part where you have to ride Rush across while some clamping pillars come down in the flightpath and Megaman gets a long fall to a quick death. I could probably beat it nowadays but that's always where the KO happened.

My favourite is the Zero series, for the weapon and cyber-elf system as well as for the sotry and plot.

All of X and the Classic series follows close behind.

My favorites are probably Mega Man 2 and Mega Man X. They're the only ones I'm good at. xD The first Mega Man game is too hard. tongue.gif Mega Man X2 is pretty fun, what with the different route you can take if you don't get all of the Zero pieces in time. Mega Man X3 was pretty difficult, and Mega Man X4 and X5 were pretty fun and enjoyable. Mega Man X6 was annoying and the level design seemed a bit masochistic; I think this is because the game was supposedly rushed.

I want to beat all of the games on the 'Mega Man Anniversary Collection' someday, though. I like the old NES ones.

I gotta say X, X2, X3. Loved those, especially the music! My fave NES game is V, probably cuz it was the first megaman I ever played.

My favorite for the X series was 4. X1 would be a close second. Starting at 4 they started to become all about Zero, leaving X in the background. Wasn't fond of that. I stopped playing them after I played X7. The games just kept getting poorer after X4.

My fav for the orginial series would be 2. Though the Metal Man power was kinda your all purpose weapon.

The 3 Legends games are underrated in my opinion. A megaman game with a storyline that actually goes somewhere? *gasp* The exploring aspect was fun, as was finding things to turn into weapons and upgrading them. I found the characters enjoyable too.

Stop what you're doing right now and play Mega Man 2. That's an order. I don't care if it's NES, emulated, Anniversary Collection, or whatever. Readysetgo.

biggrin.gif Ah...memories of my childhood...I grew up on the NES Mega Man games, and later, X1 and X2 and Mega Man 7 on the SNES. However, I never played anything after X3 (Or Mega Man 8) until the two collections came out (Yes! Because my old systems died long ago...).

Favorites were: Mega Man 2, 3, 4, and X1 and to a lesser extent, X2. The orignal was great, but the lack of saving made it uber-difficult... mad.gif

I'm with lasz on this one. I am a mega man fanboy, through and through. The only ones I am missing are 7, X2, and the ones for PS2. Other than that, I have them all. Unfortunately, MMX2 is also my favorite of the series. The weapons are extremely unique and allow for a wide variety of strategies and techniques to get through the levels (grappling hook, mid-air dash, and enemy->platform weapons...nasty). Not to mention it incorporates the X-Hunters, who are both fairly challenging and very fun to face off against. And it has a nice soundtrack. And shoryuken.

Aside from that game, I'd have to say that 2, 3, 5, and X are next in line for favorites. I didn't really care for MMX3 too much, but I still play it alot. The other NES games are great, too, but 2, 3, and 5 are just favorites. The PSX games are decent, but they tried to do too much with the game I think. Rescuing reploids and collecting parts and such is fun and all, but the original MM games are my favorites. The ones you can beat in an hour or less with 100%. thumbup.gif

And um. The BN games are a disgrace to the series. I am ashamed to even admit that I've played them.

Woot! Favorite Mega Man game topic!

Classic series: Mega Man 6, then Mega Man 5. Sorry, I didn't like MM before he got all his classic moves, but I didn't like 7 either, partly because of the music (which just didn't sound right) and the awkward-feeling gameplay, not to mention the near-impossible final boss. Never played 8. But in my opinion, MM6 has the easiest gameplay and (most importantly) by far the best music. MM5 also has nice gameplay and music. (Although MM6 might have been the easiest only because I played it many years after playing MM4 and MM5...) Honorable mention goes to MM3, for also having nice gameplay and music, and introducing the slide, although I didn't really like having to fight Quick Man without a way to stop him...

Classic sub-series (game boy): played all five; no favorites. MMII has the best music IMO, although it's also very strangely high-pitched. (MMDWR has remixed music while MMIII and MMIV have basically the same as their NES counterpart levels'. only MMII and MMV have unique music.) MMV is interesting, although not my favorite, for whatever reason. But Sunstar is fun to fight.

X series: played X, X2, X3, Xtr, Xtr2, X4, X5. Beaten all but X5. The two Xtreme games suck out the window--the first one's way too easy and the second one has a near-impossible final boss, not to mention that they butcher the graphics (they look horrible) and (again, more importantly for me) the music. X2 is the most reasonably challenging, and had some nice plot points. X3 had the best music of these, IMO, but I didn't really like the gameplay for some reason (can't remember). Played and beat X4 on emulator, then got X4 on a real Playstation and realized that I didn't possess the leet control skillz that I used to have with a SNES controller for some reason--controller design difference?

Zero: only played Zero 1.

Battle Network: only played BN1, and I'm quite entertained by the gameplay (and even the music, surprisingly).

Legends, ZX, Star Force, and other subseries and assorted games: Only played Wily and Light's Rockman Board Game, for like 10 minutes. Too much Japanese; I couldn't figure out what was going on. I believe someone's developing a translation patch.

---

My gaming repertoire first gained a new major series other than the Mario series when I rented Mega Man 4 at the local Albertson's, many, many years ago. They used to lease NES games for $1.00 for five days, and I took good advantage of it--without realizing it. I was introduced to MM4, MM5, and MM6 this way, as well as many other games. Unfortunately, some of the games, including MM6, didn't work. But at least it was an introduction.

I was introduced to the X series when I first rented MMX3 from Blockbuster for a party, and later rented MMX2 from that Albertson's (yes, they carried SNES games as well). Or was it the other way around, or maybe both at Blockbuster...yeah, I think they were both from Blockbuster.

---

The Mega Man series has, historically, been one of what I consider to be the big three game series with highly notable music--the other two being Final Fantasy and Castlevania. Unfortunately, this series began to wither when it left the NES age...for whatever reason, the best Mega Man music, in my opinion, which also happens to be some of the best of all NES/8-bit-era music--comes from that age.

I'm not going to surrender on this right now just yet, though. I like the music of MMBN1, as I mentioned, and there's good stuff here and there within the other series. Just that stuff that's overwhelmingly awesome doesn't seem to come in as large portions as it used to...

But I seriously think that the NES MM soundtracks kinda established some kind of "video game music style"--one that wasn't an obvious imitation of any other music style, but was almost exclusively found in videogames. I've got to study this further someday.

---

And um. The BN games are a disgrace to the series. I am ashamed to even admit that I've played them.

Well, they're quite different from the rest of the series--partly because they're based on a completely different premise, which separates them from all the other existent series (except Star Force, which is very recent), but I wouldn't say it's a disgrace--unless of course they whored it out as badly as Pokemon was whored out. I've only played MMBN1, as I said, but I quite enjoyed the gameplay, and I feel there's a lot of room for creativity. How they used this creativity in subsequent games is something I have yet to find out.

But basically, it's not Mega Man as we used to know it, but I don't feel that it's a disgrace.

---

So yeah, that's about it...I'm a Mega Man fan that was minted back in the days of the NES but isn't really too fond of the series anymore. Doesn't have that classic feel of it...

...would anyone like to encourage Capcom to create a new classic-style Mega Man game for the NES emulator of the Virtual Console?

Quick Man was in MM2. happy.gif He's quite weak against the Crash Bomb, actually. If you trap him in the corner, the explosion will hit him a few times. Idr how much damage it does, but it is quite substantial.

Let me rephrase my hate for the BN series. At first I actually liked that game. A lot. I played it for several hours everyday and had a nasty deck. It was great. However, I have this curse for exploring everything, and they made it extremely easy to do in that game. All the maps look the same, though, and it is really, really easy to get lost. Especially since most of the web is just a huge maze leading to a dead end.

The worst part, though, is the extremely frequent, uber-cheap kills in almost every battle. When you are exploring the super-long dead-end maze part of the web that I mentioned above, the last 4 or 5 rooms have a few literally impossible battles. Here's a good example:

There is this enemy that you can get the Candle chip from. He's a big dog/gargoyle-like thing and just sits in the front row and shoots this slow-moving fireball that insta-kills you if it touches (well, it insta-kills ME...idk if I just didn't have enough life or if it is death). He also has heath regen. And 300 HP, IIRC. Easy enough to kill if there are one or two. It moves slowly and can't move down or anything from what I remember. Now, there is this formation in those levels that has three of them lined up down the first column. They all shoot at the same time and it's impossible to dodge 3 at once. Which means you have about 1-2 seconds to deal 300 damage or put up a shield, else it's game over. 300 damage is big time, considering my strongest weapons could do like 200 (Hero Sword, I think), but the chances of finding those on first turn is slim.

There are also a bunch of formations that just have cheap combinations of enemies. Those fire dash birds in particular are nasty. 3 of them is insta-kill because they do like 120 damage per hit. And leave a painful fire trail. How do you beat that when you can only hit them as they land and they fly to fast too hit them when they charge you? Also, they stagger charges to make it near impossible to actually time an attack. Lame. Tough to dodge, too, because fire lingers and they will charge one after another to engulf the entire arena. When you try to dodge, you'll get hit my fire tile and then hit by charge. Death.

I could go on and on, really, but I'll stop. You get the point. It was a fun game until I got like halfway through and they felt the need to make some formations impossible to defeat. Cheap kills are not fun. Unavoidable kills are not fun. Challenging fights are fun. Unfortunately, there are none of those in this game. Just cheap KOs and pushover bosses.

Ah, but Quick Man WAS in MM3. You have to take on each of the eight bosses from Mega Man 2 in the shell forms, except this time their traditional weaknesses aren't in place (no 1HKO for Metal Man or Air Man, no easy weaknesses for Quick Man, etc.). I think that's what GMH was referring to.

Reply to Caesar, about MMBN:

Yeah, some of the enemies just get really annoying later on. But I don't think I ever met Candle 3...hmm...maybe I did. But I never met them in the formation you're talking about. Yeah, unfortunately, the Candle enemies are massively annoying but don't give you a particularly useful chip either (Candle is pretty useless since you have to move around a lot and enemies also usually move around a lot and are likely to hit the candle you set).

But yeah, the fire dash birds are probably one of the most annoying enemies in the game.

By comparison, the bosses are relatively tame. Now, i haven't fought ShadoMan, PharoMan, or Bass, which are supposed to the superbosses of BN1, and I haven't explored the deep recesses of the internet either, where I assume exist these really tough enemy formations. Maybe I'll have to do that sometime. (Although it just kinda seems wrong to go fooling around the internets while the fate of the world is hanging...although I'm completely aware, of course, that Dr. Wily isn't gonna attempt to fire his dream virus around the world until I get there and beat it up first. tongue.gif

Well, all the required bosses are, at least, except one. The tough ones that I've fought so far are WoodMan, SharkMan (holy crap he's tough), and MagicMan. All of them have killed me several times, although I'd say WoodMan and MagicMan are kinda cheap in their methods--5/9 panels wood attack at once and summoning black cloud enemies. Only SharkMan's zooming attacks are legitimately dodgeable by sufficient finger-speed most of the time.

Reply to Caesar and laszlow about Quick Man:

Yeah, laszlow got to my point before I did. Yeah, Quick Man is tough without some way to stop him. Although I guess you DO get to slide in MM3...

Also, I forgot to mention, I've also played the arcade game Mega Man: the Power Fighters. Not too notable, but good for a quick game, I guess.
