Well, now that FFIII has been remade in 3-D DS magic, and FFIV is imminently getting the same treatment, what's the interest in a graphical update to FFVI?

Personally, it'd be great to have a new look on the game, but I wish they'd skip that step and really make a console-level epic out of it.

I agree with you. I think it would be awesome to see FFVI in 3D, they did a really good job with the 3D scenes on the Playstation version. I also agree that they should put it on a console instead of the DS. I heard from some website that they had planned to put FFIII on Playstation 2 instead of the DS. I wish they could do a full 3D remake of FFVI on Playstation 3 or something.

And they also gave Terra, the most famous green-haired girl in history, blonde hair.

Well, sarcasm aside, I think that FFVI could be a true smash hit if ported into 3D. However, on the road of becoming ported to 3D, it could also endure thousands of potential mistakes, ones that I and probably a lot of you here who are strongly-attached fans of FFVI's original style would vocally object to.

But personally I'm less concerned with a 3D version than with a gameplay fix. Fix all the bugs (except possibly Vanish+Doom/X-Zone, which the game's own rules make kinda legit), let other characters get commands while Cyan's waiting, and give Gau green hair, and possibly give Gestahl a Leo-like playable moment. Maybe also a few plot expansions--what happened to people like Banon, and why did Duncan hide himself, for example. But keep classic elements, such as the submariner, sand-on-boots, self-help-booklet, for-a-nickel, seafood soup, etc. (hint, Squenix: pay attention to what highly appreciative fans like us have to say--stuff we say will probably end up improving your company's business!).

I think that since SE has discovered how successful the DS remake of FFIII (and undoubtedly the remake of FFIV will become) was, that the possibility of remaking the rest of the older games in such a fashion should definitely be considered.

It's not going to bug me if they don't though. People already complain enough about the remakes. tongue.gif

i would rather see a console remake of 4,5, and 6. not just because of the graphics, but also just so that they can finally finish the remaking process with a bang. and i dont have a ds. then again, i dont have a ps3 either. man, im behind.

either way though, a 3d remake, even if it is ds-quality, is good news to me. i still hope they do a full scale console remake eventually though.

I agree with you. Their remakes would be better if they listened to us. For example: we wanted a better translation, so they did it, and it was better(besides taking out some of the famous lines). If they did that with some of the other things, such as the gameplay(make it more difficult), a 3D remake would blow every thing else away.

That depends on whether the company thinks they have any chance of selling a remake to a new audience. Hardcore fans of anything have some short-sighted biases regarding their pet projects. Does one "classic" line really mean more to you than a slightly new plot direction that eliminates it? Wait, did I just say NEW PLOT DIRECTION? OMGOMGOMG NOOOO SQUARE YOU HATE US AAAAAAH!!111!!!1!!eleven!.

Rabid fan bases want exactly what they already have, but shined up in very specific places and very specific ways that vary from fan to fan. There's no point in directing a remake at the existing fan base when a good chunk of it is going to hate it just for being different or not how they would have done it.

Sure, I'm glad that the 'spoony bard' line has remained in every version of FFIV (so far as I know), and it irritated me that the guard doesn't strike Celes in FFVIa (but as much because they clearly removed that to appeal to ridiculous PC interest groups at the cost of story and character development), and I even missed a few other lines once in a while. But neither one of these games is composed entirely of my personal nostalgic recollections. When fans start kvetching about how "slit his mama's throat for a nickel" was such a vastly superior line and blah blah blah despite the fact that it clearly didn't fit with the narrative or the tone of the game and was replaced by one that did... Well, that's why game developers don't prostrate themselves at the altar of fandom. Fans don't make good artistic choices.

Personally, I'm looking forward to the FFIV remake. I'd rather they'd gotten away from chibi-graphics, and it would be nice if a potential FFVI remake were made to look more like FFX than FFIII DS, but that's just because I prefer the more mature-looking graphics in general.

I understand what you are saying, and your right. Square Enix can't prostrate themselves to the entire FFVI or FFIV fandbase. They can't and they won't go in a new plot direction, but still they could expand upon some plot elements they just couldn't on the SNES. They could beef up the gameplay and still not change anything crucial to the story.

I do agree that Square can't depend on the fans to make artistic choices, but there are some very intelligient fans with interesting ideas. They certainly afford to take a risk or two. In the end, all that matters is, if they did make a full 3D remake, that the remake captures the essence of the original, even if it slightly differs from it, and a new generation is introduced to the game.

I agree with Karasuman, because a story like FF6 is just too serious to have all the characters look cute and cuddly.

That's true, that is why I would like to see a remake of FFIV and FFVI on a console instead of a handheld.

Why's that? You think handhelds are in any way less serious? Why?

I think he's referring to the visual style that's preferred by handheld game developers because of the more limited hardware available to them. Cute and cuddly they can do; mature and realistic takes a more advanced system.

The visual style doesn't bother me much. FFIII looks great, but I agree with the comments that silvermike first made. They have already made a handheld version, now I would like to see it on a console.

Plus I don't have a DS, but I would buy one if they made a remake on it.

in my opinion, i like console versions much better than handhelds. for some reason, when i play handhelds, i tend to not pay attention as much to the story or dialogue. sometimes i have the music off because im doing something else. the graphics quality is obviously compromised as well, though this isn't a big deal to me. i played FF6 on the PS2 and the gameboy, and i preferred the PS2 version. there is something else that i can't put my hand on, but i just become so much more emersed (spelling?) in everything when it is on a console.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the handheld versions, but I think that since they have already done a handheld version they should go ahead and do a console version.

Well there's another issue between handhelds and consoles that's probably a more important issue than whether they use chibi-style artwork. That's because, barring less-than-perfectly-legal methods in most cases, the screens of handheld game systems are pretty darn small. You can play GBA games on GameCube using a special adapter (and similar between the GB and the SNES's Super Game Boy), but I don't think there currently exists any first-party hardware (or probably even third-party) that can put a DS or PSP game on the TV or computer screen.

Smaller screens = you can probably get away with more imperfections in your graphics, but players will have a harder time seeing things, period, and you also have less space in which to display things. Bigger screens means you need to put more effort into making sure things look decent, but also means you have much more space to work with. I think the DS has two Gameboy-sized screens and the PSP has a somewhat larger (single) screen, but still, they're pretty small, even compared to that of a small laptop.

Additionally, I think it costs more to make a console game than a handheld game (someone please correct me if I'm wrong), which means it's a bigger investment and a game company will have to bet on bigger returns.

Something that would be interesting is if they added a few, post-Tower events, but only if they didn't make up some loophole that kept magic in the game. If they added plot to the game that specifically had the characters working without the use of magic, they could really open up some new gameplay options.

That would be cool, especially if you wanted to extend the ending, which you could do on a console version, but if I had any say, (which I don't, but this is just my opinion), I would try to emphasize magic coming from nature instead of the Three Goddesses. It would be interesting to play without magic for a while, because with the powerful enemies in the game would be very difficult, which is a plus, however, I agree with what karasuman said, they can't change the plot direction of the story. That includes my idea of magic coming from nature instead of the Three Goddesses, but I think that this game is so great that if Square Enix weighs the pros and cons, they would see that the rewards out-weigh the risks, and they could create a new 3D remake of this game that would be a major hit.

How much room do you think there is telling the story again, in a totally different way? I'm thinking of the Zelda series here: a few real standards (there's a Zelda, a Link, a Gannon, a Master Sword, etc.) but it's a retelling and re-imagining of the plot. The Final Fantasy series sort of does this, but really differently, since the key links (heh) are minor instead of central.

I'm not sure *I* want this, but what would you think of a remake that was inspired by FFVI, but only based on it - an Empire trying to reclaim magicite, a resistence, etc.

That's sort of what they are doing with the new live action Star Wars television series, anyways, that would be interesting. Maybe some sort of prequel or sequel, or maybe a smaller story about an Imperial soldier, but if they were going to create a 3D remake, I would first want to see FF6, then maybe FF4, and after that I would like to see a new story based on FF6.

I thought something cool would be to see the story through Kefka's perspective.

dont get me wrong, i do like the GBA versions quite a bit, especially since i can carry them around with me.

and i would like them to un-do some of the name changes they made for the GBA. i got confused when i saw all these weird, unknown names of espers, only to summon them and figure out that they had merely re-named the older ones. not a big deal, but i miss them... sad.gif

i would like to see them expand the story some. but i do like the original version. so i am all for 2 different 3d versions, one with extra story and one without. i would like to see more character development, maybe some extra story. i like the idea of involving kefka or another imperial in extra ways. also, what happened to all those returners and the empire? sure, they said that vector got blown up, but there must have been solders elsewhere. at least, i would like a scene (once the world of ruin has begun) depicting what kefka did to the world over that short period.

I think what they could do is add a few scenes with Kefka and Banon and I would hope Duncan. They could also make some sort of flashback scene with Leo, since so many people love Leo and for over twelve years we have tried to find a way to revive him.

If they create a remake of Final Fantasy VI for the DS they could use the wifi multiplayer functionality for multiplayer battles in the colliseum, they could give players actual control of their characters too, and you could choose the items you wager, for example a player could wager an offering relic for ragnarok, or an offering for a gem box
they could also possibly let players gain levels past 99 and up to 500 or 1000,

they'd probably need parties with different characters,
but there are 14 characters to choose from so it shouldn't be an issue,
or they could have one on one or two on two battles instead of 4 player parties for multiplayer

That'd be interesting, doesnt' seem like it'd ever happen though.

You could acquire more than 1 of the unique items that in the game that way

Wouldn't having two offerings be just like having one offering and the genji gloves?

Offerings don't stack, so it'd be just like having one Offering and no Genji Glove.
