Courtesy Herald Sun... (Ooh, a new sort of source for once.)

The title of this article, Game Over, is appropriate.  Playstation consoles can no longer be fixed to run games made to run on different models (that is, to say, they can no longer be modded).  Sony sells games in three distinct regions, and they are not supporting the modding of playstation consoles because of the evident threat of piracy.  This is an interesting and kind of unexpected decision by Sony, when the threat of emulation seems to be much greater than modded games.

I don't own a modded playstation or know anyone that does, so this doesn't affect me.  However, as Tiddles kindly pointed out to me, this "sucks for Australia [because] nobody ever releases games there."  The Australian guy mentioned that their consumers can't use legally imported games anymore.  I don't know how much of a blow to their ecmonomy that is, but that pretty much shuts down imports entirely, except of course when people mod their playstations illegally.

Actually, to tell you the truth, I always thought it was illegal in the first place. I always fear I might destroy either the mod or the PS when combining them, so I've stayed away from them.(Not exceptionally skilled at soldering....)

So mods are illegal.
I may be a little dense here, but doesn't the Ruling most likely signify that foriegn games will no longer be sold in America or something along those lines, due to the fact that they would most likely be played on a tampered system(Mod/Swap trick)?

I'll just say I have a Japanese PS. Which could be true. It's not illegal to have a foreign console, right?

I actually thought that modding was illegal before this whole event, but I have nothing to back that assumption up.

So now that modding has been officially proclaimed illegal, what does Sony intend to do to enforce their "law"? Send around inspectors to every household containing a Playstation unit and check for modifications? >_>

I'm pretty sure that Sony can't declare a practice illegal.  It isn't illegal to own foreign games or consoles, but it can be illegal to sell them.

i don't believe sony can declare this either...only the federal government can declare what can/cannot be traded stateside and internationally...

It's already illegal to do that.  Stupid copyright law stuff.

To calrify: Sony didn't declare anything. They went to court to have a judge do that, and he did.
