IM SO EXCITED THAT SQUARE ENIX IS GOING TO MAKE NOT ONLY A NEW STAR OCEAN GAME, BUT ALSO REMAKES OF THE FIRST TWO STAR OCEAN AND THEY ARE GOING TO RELEASE THEM ON PSP!!!! Okay enough with the caps. Anyways, I am very happy(as im sure you can tell) about this news. My only hope is that they bring the two remakes to the US and that i get a PS3(and that Star Ocean 4 is on the PS3) so i can play Star Ocean 4. Is anyone else extremely happy?
p.s. if you have anymore news about this topic, do not hesitate to say it. This post has been edited by djmistaspot on 27th May 2007 01:28 |

I have learned about this news before, and it has also been reported here before. Each time I hear of it I grow even more excited.
The remakes on the PSP are going to be called 'Star Ocean: First Descent' and 'Star Ocean: Second Evolution', and Star Ocean 4's title and platform are yet to be announced. Here are some screenshots: Star Ocean 4 Star Ocean: First Descent Star Ocean: Second Evolution Looking at SO1's screenshot, it would seem that the SO1 remake will take on the visual design of SO2. It seems there might be new character designs as well (no more Ratix with long hair? There doesn't seem to be much information with SO2's screenshot, and for some reason Ratix appears in it. Maybe he appears in a flashback, similar to Ratix, Milly, Iria, and Ronixis appearing for about a few seconds during the beginning of Claude's scenario in SO2. Overall, I'm very excited. I think this is the first time tri-Ace has been working on so many games at one time (add in Eternal Sonata for the 360 into the equation and they're working on four games at once!). I thought two back-to-back Valkyrie Profiles was awesome enough... I can't wait to see what changes and improvements are made in the remake of SO1, since from what I gather it was an unfinished game (it certainly wasn't terribly lengthly). It's possible they'll alter the storyline somewhat. As for SO4, I wonder if it's battle system will surpass SO3's. I also hope they further refine the Item Creation system. And of course, I wonder what the story will revolve around. Will Possible spoilers: highlight to view play some role in it? Or will it still revolve around the tried-and-true 'underdeveloped planet' storyline? 4D Space -------------------- |

Though even if SO3's major plot twist is left intact, it's not like the primitive planet angle would be ignored. Look at how easily Fayt found two. You're off vacationing. Boom, massive alien invasion... and you try so hard to escape and just get back to school, but there's all these primitive planets in the way! What's a kid to do but to pick up a sword and help some girls in need? Star Ocean's battle system has always been the main draw factor to their games. What I hope is that they finally figure out a non-frustrating way to do item creation. I really, really hated all their previous attempts. -------------------- Visions of Peace - Four Generals, One Empire, and the Returners caught in the middle. |

Quote (Rune Knight @ 27th May 2007 02:18) Ratix is there because that's a SO1 screenshot, not SO2's. But this is the SO2 'Second Evolution' screenshot, and I can't imagine why he'd appear here other than a flashback or something. I've always been neutral with item creation, although SO3's IC system drove me crazy sometimes with the whole price thing. I really liked recruiting different NPC inventors with set skill levels (making it necessary to recruit the more skilled inventors), as opposed to your own playable characters creating items with varying skill levels and talents. I hope they find some way to combine the two, and hopefully make it so that you don't have to press confirm over and over again to get the price you want... -------------------- |

I didn't understand why an NPC wanted me to pay them so much money the first time... I had skipped the IC and opted to proceed through the game as fast as possible. I guess it's my own fault, but ever since then, I've detested collecting and paying NPC's for their abilities.
That and watching facial expressions to figure out if something is made correctly? Could it be any more tedious? Oh yeah, SO2's click and build useless object, restock on components, and start again. Guess I shouldn't be complaining. -------------------- Visions of Peace - Four Generals, One Empire, and the Returners caught in the middle. |

I never found recruiting them so much of a hassle as pressing the button OVER and OVER again just to find the right price. Only to accidently press it in haste and skip the price.
SO1/2 was just a hassle with the resetting...no Originality? Forget customizing those ultimate weapons. It would make my day if they incorporated SO3's system, but improved it a bit, and just let you pick a specific price for whatever item you're trying to create. I like the SO series primarily for the combat, the multiple party and character setups, the combat, the music and general atmosphere of the different worlds, and the combat. Some simplification of the SO 3 item and skill customization system would be welcome, (as in making it less complicated, less convoluted, and more intuitive), and all of the expected gameplay tweaks already have me curious. I am very intrigued by these multiple remakes, and I'll definitely be keeping tabs on them in the coming months.

Quote (Zeromus_X @ 30th May 2007 23:43) SO1/2 was just a hassle with the resetting...no Originality? Forget customizing those ultimate weapons. Or you could reset the PSX some hundred times playing the odds. I managed to get the Midus Sword before the Arms Tournament by doing that. Eat it, Dias. I wonder if they can smooth out the fighting system so that we get more side-kickish style attacks. Those were much more interesting than Mirage and Cliff's fists o' fury... though MP-kill was ingenious... not to mention the only plausible way to defeat early bosses at high difficulty levels. -------------------- Visions of Peace - Four Generals, One Empire, and the Returners caught in the middle. |

The remake of SO1 for the PSP (Star Ocean: First Departure) was recently released in Japan, and although I'm not too far in it yet there are several additions that I've heard of so far. Here they are in spoilers:
Possible spoilers: highlight to view Everything is revamped to SO2's standards, which was expected from the screenshots. Item Creation and battles are very similar to SO2 (and in fact, according to certain sprite rippers, the developers pretty much just re-used SO2's entire engine). Characters now have a normal three-hit combo for normal attacks, similar to the Tales series. Many skills were altered in the remake, to where they are more or less useful than they were before (for example, Ratix's Shouretsuha/Rift Wave tech isn't as powerful as it was before). The game is very beautiful. It's like SO2 (again, same engine), but the sprites are much more refined. The pre-rendered backgrounds are really gorgeous. The World Map is now in full 3D, and is an actual "world map" as opposed to the area-to-area map in the original SO1 and SO3. Many events are now made into anime cutscenes, which are rewatchable in a gallery you can access from the main menu. As for the two new playable characters mentioned in teasers, they are none other than...Eris Jerand and Welch Vineyard (!) from Star Ocean 3. in order to recruit Welch, simply have one free character slot, and go to her house on Astral Continent after beginning the Emblem quest. Welch is pretty much just a nonsense, comic relief type of optional character. She attacks with her hand-stick, and has many other funny attacks like a copy of Nibelung Valesti. I'm not sure on how to recruit Eris, but I hear that it requires you to give up Marvel, and I don't think I could do that. xD As for that SO4 trailer...it looks gorgeous! I just wish they'd reveal the title and platform already. -------------------- |
