Anyway, moving on, how long does it usally take you to find Doom Gaze. Bahamut is the only esper I don't have (except Odin since I leveled him up). I've been looking for him for six hours over the course of 3 days and I still can't find him. Do you have to fly over a certain place? I'm confused. I don't remember exactly what to do. I think it is very strange, on my other save I found him in 3 minutes. |

Doom Gaze is positioned randomly on the world map and never moves from his spot. Not 100% sure if it's the same in FF6a, but that's how it works in the SNES version.
To find him you have to fly around until you run into him. That's all. There's no other way than by exploring the world map with the airship. If you just fly in circles you'll never run into him because his position is fixed (until you fight him and he runs away, at which point it changes again.) If you have other things to do, forget about Doom Gaze for now. Just move on and you may run into it flying from one place to another. -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

I just flew around the world for 15 minutes till I met him. And after he ran away, I just did it again. It's a pain in the arse, but you just have to be patient.

How many "spots" are there on the map, just to get a sense of how long it'd take to randomly run into him on average?

I believe the map is 256x256, which means 65,536 possible locations. But given the way the airship works, it's unlikely that you'd be able to reliably cover every single spot on the map by moving in a grid-like fashion. You're likely to drift sideways by a tile and miss some.

Actually, if you angle yourself just right, then start flying with no further adjustments, it IS possible to hit every pixel onscreen...I did a similar technique in DBZ Budokai 3 when flying around. Just angle EVER SO SLIGHTLY off center either left or right, and then fly straight...everytime you respawn on the other side of the map, you ought to be right next to where you were on the last pass. It should be doable in FF6 too...thats how I used to find Doom Gaze, anyways. -------------------- "Sometimes I amaze even myself." -Han Solo, "Star Wars: A New Hope" |

Yeah, I always did the same thing. It always seems to take forever no matter what method, though. :/ I always run into him when I'm busy doing something other than trying to look for him.
Quote (Djibriel) To find Doom Gaze...yeah, finding Doom Gaze tends to be a pain. There are 4096 'tiles' on the Overworld Map. Doom Gaze possesses one of them. If you cross that tile with the Falcon, Doom Gaze will attack you. Doom Gaze will remain on the same tile until you fight him; if he escapes, he'll possess another random tile. Altitude doesn't matter. -------------------- |

@Glenn:
The airship only occupies 1 tile. The size of the sprite doesn't matter - it's the airship's position that's tested against. @Scorpio: That's not possible with the SNES though, nor the GBA. To do that, you'd have to angle yourself at exactly 1/256th of a degree. Even if you were lucky enough to angle yourself just right, the precision of the system isn't high enough to support such a small angle. I'd say you can probably angle yourself at the very least in such a way that for every 32 tiles you move forward, you'd move sideways by 1 tile. The alternative is to angle yourself so that you'd be going EXACTLY straight and would move sideways by a tile every time you go around the map. IIRC you can move the airship sideways. But this would be pretty difficult to do. @Zeromus_X: I'm fairly sure the map is more than 64x64, though. Granted, I haven't verified this, but 64x64 is more of a dungeon/town map size. That's odd. I found Doom Gaze unintentionally about five times, and when I /was/ looking for him, I found him within two minutes. Does he occupy a single space on the map, or does he move arounduntil you land on him, because my strategy was just to fly in a circle until something happened. |

To find Doom Gaze, I just fly in a straight line, hold down the button that makes the airship go forward, and just watch TV while I wait for him to show up. He always ended up showing up within the duration of 15 minutes.

Do you think this qualifies Doom Gaze as "bonus content" instead of part of the game's main plot? I mean, most of the WOR is pretty optional when it comes right down to it, but Doom Gaze seems to be calculated so that it's unlikely you'll run into him in a normal playthrough.

I would bet my life on this, but where you say hes positioned may be a little off, because i went to a spot above Doma Castle and made sure to fly in circles (nearly perfect ones) till i found him, and i ended up finding him every time till his death at the hands of ME...hehe.

I could fly around forever looking for him, but the moment I decided to fly somewhere and do something productive, he would show up. If he doesn't move and stays in just one spot, it must've been the one spot I didn't fly over.
A good strategy would be to pretend that you're going to do something that you really want to do and you should run into him. -------------------- Why, hello guys! Haven't been around here in a loooong time! http://dragcave.net/user/LadyTwi http://www.backloggery.com/ladytwi |

For me, he appears when I don't want to fight him and when I brought a weak party. He never gets me when my altitude is low for some reason.

The altitude has no bearing on the chances of encountering DG. Only the X/Y position matters.
I'll try to grab ahold of an FF6 code dump or make one and will post the exact encounter pseudocode, for those curious, later tonight. -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

Usually, if you just turn at all, and just keep pressing forward, you'll run into him some time.
What I did on my Celes SCC before was equip her to she's immune to everything Doom Gaze can throw at her (Minerva + Wall Ring + level not divisible by 5), equip her with AtmaWeapon, and just turn the game on turbo and hold down A, tapping the direction key whenever I see that I just finished a battle. I got Bahamut soon enough. If you're not playing a specific challenge though, I find the best way to deal with him is just to buy some Pearl Rods (around 10 will do) as soon as you get the Falcon (You should have some extra money...), and whenever you run to him, break Rods like a madman. On my GBA playthrough, I was lucky and he didn't escape the first time, so even with only three people standing (Lv 5 Death...), I killed him before he can run away even once. |

Does anyone know if his position changes every time you get into the airship or go in and out of a town, as well? It must change other than encountering him or else it would be possible for you NEVER to run into him.
I never had much trouble finding him, myself, usually because I never purposely went after him and just left it to chance. In fact this most recent time in FFVIA I was really lucky: I'd just gotten ahold of Bum Rush and ran into him the first time, so I hit him about three or four times with it for about 5000 HP damage, then a short while later I ran into him again and BEAT him using Bum/Phantom Rush, and uhh, Blizzara with the other characters, I think (some -a spell, anyway). So while most people seem to beat him over the course of several battles for some reason he stuck around for a long time the second time so I could hit him with 7-8 Bum/Phantom Rushes and beat him really quick. I had a decent party, too, but except for having Sabin at the time it wasn't anything special. |

i just set my airship to fly at an angle, then just rubber-banded the forward button down and did something else until i heard the music that signaled a battle.

It's really best to save old Doomy for last. And don't even think about looking for him with anyone with a level divisible by 5, as he kicks off the fight w/ Lvl5 Doom every time. When I first started hunting him, my only member who didn't get pwned right off the bat was Umaro hence, I figured Umaro was somehow immune to Lvl5 Doom (I knew very little of Blue Magic at the time, you must remember). Later, shortly before attacking Kefka's Tower, I went after him to complete my Magicite collection. He Lvl5 Doomed me and nobody died. And for some reason the fight took about 7 or 8 turns and he never ran after the usual 3 or 4.
