After a few days of rumors and speculation, confirmation regarding a new remake of Final Fantasy IV has been provided by Shonen Jump. With a page of screen shots and other information, there seems to be little doubt that Square-Enix is indeed working on a new version of their first Super Nintendo Final Fantasy.
The DS remake will reportedly use the same engine as Final Fantasy III DS. There's no word yet of a release outside of Japan, but, hopefully, details will be forthcoming in the next few days. Source: ds fanboy via Ronin (thanks!) Yeah, yeah, I know. Another remake! And this game just came out on the GBA less than two years ago! And aaaaaaah! AAAAAH! Square is doing ANOTHER REMAKE! Capitalist scum aside, I have to admit that I'm excited about this. Final Fantasy IV was one of my favorite games (I thought I'd died and gone to heaven when Final Fantasy Chronicles was announced, back in the day), and reviving it with a fresh new style could be a very good thing. Maybe it's not the Square game that most deserves a remake, and maybe the remake will completely destroy a classic... but I can't help but hope that this will be terrific! Good God, enough already.
Though, I would like a good remake for IV for once. Chronicles was pretty bad, and IVA was just awful. I have no plans to get a DS, though. Source link needs to be fixed. -------------------- "I had to write four novels before they let me write comic books." -Brad Meltzer |

Money, money, money
Must be funny In the rich mans world Money, money, money The Abba lyrics are essentially all, except I should point out this half refers to yay capitalism and half refers to the fact I'm skint for the forseeable future yet now might need a DS in addition to a ton of other stuff I want.. I feel just like karasuman: somewhat excited. FF4 is, hands down, my favorite. On the other hand, I'm lukewarm about it being 3D - I'm not sure it'll be as enjoyable if the oldschool charm about its 16x16 sprites ends up being replaced by big polygonal monstrousities.
Definately something I'm keeping an eye out for though. Seriously? If it's awesome enough, I'll consider buying a DS just to play it. I did buy a PS2 to play Guitar Hero, so it wouldn't be the first time for me. ![]() Hopefully if they go the FF4a way, they'll put a bit more effort into integrating the rest of the crew into the game. Even at the cost of modifying a few storyline elements (for instance, I could definately see Yang rejoining the party as soon as you can complete the Pan/Spoon quest - maybe give the player some party-switching system à -la FF6...) The "new" characters in 4a only had one slightly short dungeon to go through and bam, ultimate equipment all neatly laid out in a single room. The "regular" characters, on the other hand, had to take the scenic route and dig through the final dungeon to get their ultimate equipment. Actually, the more I think about this game, the more excited I feel about it. Edit: the graphics look kind of overly cutsey, but there's a certain near-sprite-like charm to them regardless. Nice... I can't complain about remakes at all because they're exactly what I want. I don't buy any of the new games whatsoever and I buy every remake. This one being no exception. Quote (Silverlance @ 9th May 2007 22:56) It isn't hot pink, it's a vivid purple. If you look closely on the sprites of the 2D game, you can see these spots on there as well. I personally think it looks very true to form. I realize that Squeenix remaking these games makes it look a lot like they're milking it. ( It's because they are. ) But to be honest, I'd replay these games anyway. They're just doing me the favor of polishing it up with better graphics, translations, etc. I think this is fantastic. If it's any bit as great as the DS remake of III, I'm going to be on cloud nine. As I've already got a DS, all I need is to shell out a bit of cash when it comes out. -------------------- "Some fight for justice. It's nice to see another Final Fantasy game from the 2D era make once more another strike on a portable game, except with 3D graphics this time..
But to be quite honest, I'm just tired of hearing a new remake just as much as hearing a new FF7 movie/game/etc. Square needs to stop planning and releasing all of these numerous rereleases and remakes and spinoffs, because it's already damaged their legacy. Not trying to be mean or anything, but I'm not going to get a remake ever again if all it is is just the same game but with some random +1 new dungeon and a new skill or equipments. I want a remake that will give people a new fresh view of the game from start to finish, as in what they thought about doing to make the game even better back then, although it wasn't possible with the medium, so now they can do this and make fans like them even more. So far, all I have are FF Anthology, Chronicles, Origins, IV Advance, and V Advance. It's a waste of my money to just keep buying any game I've beaten dozens of times just to be more "modern" and "updated". |

Am I in the minority in feeling that this 3D-remaking of things is kinda going overboard, and having some kind of hunch that there are uncanny valley issues associated with the cognitive dissonance between nearly-realistic 3D graphics and not-very-realistic gameplay?
...and that very few games today really make use of the player's imagination anymore. I mean, it's cool and all that they're doing FF4 in 3D, but I'm immediately scared that there will be stuff like characters rocking back and forth unnecessarily in battle and 3D-graphics-specific quirks like that that I don't like. Okay, fine, complain that I'm not in with the times, but I think that my dissatisfaction with 3D is exactly the "uncanny valley" type of effect that I mentioned above--that the game makes the player (me) subconsciously expect a degree of realism with the graphics that isn't quite met by the actual game itself. Of course, if Squenix actually does a good job with the graphics such that this effect is dispelled, I will be very pleased. And one more condition: "You spoony bard!!" must be present in the final translation, no matter whatever else they change. No "You f***ing b****!!", no "You stupid bard!!", no nothing else. "You spoony bard!!" is just too classic for them not to put it in that if they don't it'll be a serious disappointment. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. Fruity? There's a problem??
I'm with L. Cully on this. I see the use bright, solid colors as an attempt to infuse the character models with Amano stylins. I'm always happy to play FFVI again, especially if it looks different. The FFIII DS engine is suited to the game, I think... if I complain about anything, it'd be that by this point in the series less SD characters would better suit the mood of the games. -------------------- "Cavefish is delicious, but only if cooked." |

I like the thought of visiting some of these places in 3D (though I'm curious how secret passages will work - dark patches on the walls that make your model vanish and screw up the display as the camera desperately tries to find some non-solid area to position itself in?) What I'd love to see are a few liberties taken with the game to make it more open-ended, without changing the storyline too dramatically, though. Let's face it, we've pretty much all played any of the previous versions (if you haven't, do it - it's worth it ![]() Possible spoilers: highlight to view Maybe some scenes where you get to play as Kain while under Golbez's command, or Golbez and FuSoYa fighting their way through the Lunar core, for instance. ![]() The UK and most of Europe is always very late in getting games. Chances are, if it were released in japan today, it wouldn't end up being localized in Europe for another year or two. ![]() Moderator Edit For one thing, Lasz posted about this before you did. For another, I'm a news poster--it's my responsibility to post the news. Anyway, from the screenshots I've seen, the characters don't look the way I'd like them. I know they're trying to make it feel the same way as in the sprites, and I respect that. But what I'd like to see is the characters have more of a feel towards Amano's artwork. I'm actually interested in seeing how this finishes out. Mind I don't have high expectations for this, so I may be pleasantly surprised (similar to the way I felt about FFXII). And Kain's sprite does him next to nothing in justice. At the very least, Kain should look intimidating. Although the Cecil and Rosa design of them standing on the balcony in Baron looks very, very, nice. -CSM This post has been edited by karasuman on 13th May 2007 01:51 -------------------- The NEW Final Fantasy Wiki! They're recruiting a vocalist for a new version of Theme of Love, with Uematsu presiding over production. The 18 and up bit is the age limitation for prospective singers.
I was reading elsewhere that there will be voice acting. I wonder if it's even worth speculating on what Japanese voices SE would chose, considering they are usually not keen on using prominent voice talent in Final Fantasy.
