I had that same problem with my budew. So i just caught a roselia cause I am a weenie. I decided to start over, saying the fact that half my party was either too bad or too good. And there were also a few pokemon i wanted to raise from the start to.

Quote (dont chocobos rule? @ 5th May 2007 14:01) are ruby, sapphire, and emerald worth playing? i have the opportunity to get them dirt cheap right now and i want to know if they are a waste of money. the last pokemon game i played was crystal, so i kinda want to see what these ones have to offer What version was crystal? Gold/Silver generation? Sapphire was alright, but nothing particularly amazing. If you liked the others, go for it. I'm partial to Leaf Green simply because it brings back memories of grade 6, when I bought Blue for my old green-screen Game Boy. If I had a DS I'd prolly pick Diamond up, simply for the wireless trading and battling. You can pretty much collect all of them without leaving your house, and message boards online are already full of trade offers and stuff. Except it's becoming an MMORPG, which I can't hope to be competitive in. Seriously, Pokemon is at its best when it comes down to trading and fighting with others. Except now, it's probably too competitive for me, and I'd rather fight a friend than a stranger. To each his own, of course. Diamond is definitely a step in the right direction. -------------------- Lou: There's a couple of guys fighting down at the aquarium, Chief. Wiggum: Do they still sell those frozen bananas? I gave in and bought Diamond this morning. A bunch of my college gamer friends bought it, surprisingly, mostly because the entire club's full of DS fanchildren like me. It's kinda fun so far, but I'm just waiting until I can transfer my GBA pokemon into it. My copy of LeafGreen's pokedex has around 320 on it or so, and I can probably get some sweet trades after some transferring and breeding.
The new starters are all pretty neat, and I went with Turtwig. Ground/Grass is a pretty sexy combination. Fire/Fighting's also nifty, but I went with Torchic in Emerald, so I'm trying a different side this time. This post has been edited by laszlow on 11th May 2007 23:18 -------------------- |

Quote (Caesar @ 4th May 2007 21:19) w00t for Sporetrode! Such a genius pokemon. I haven't gotten any games since Pokemon Gold, though. I really want to get back into it, but not only do am I lacking a DS but I also don't know any of these crazy new pokemon so I'd be wayyyy out of the loop. A few of my friends compete in tournies, so I could always ask for help from them sometime, I guess. As for being out of the loop, it really is a bicycle. Most of the time, I catch myself setting parallels with Red/Blue Such as: Shinx is the new Pikachu (even tho pikachu exists in the game, shinx is the electric that you can attain in the first location after the professor's city. Piplup is the new Squirtle, etc, etc... Quote They need to make a pokemon game that has the original 151, plus the better pokemon of the new elements (steel, dark etc.) To add up to 200-ish pokemon, add in the wifi effects, and that's worth playing. With the FireRed/LeafGreen compatibility, this game is the one you're talking about. as for 200-ish tho, I believe the new pokemon actually bring the national numbers up to about 430 pokemon. Note: any lower evolution pokemon I mention does in-fact have it's evolutions available in the game, I'm just saving time. Besides that, many of the originals continue to be standards. Pikachu, Geodude, Onix, Tentacool, Magikarp, Machop, Goldeen, Abra, Gastly, Chansey, Clefairy, Ponyta. The ones that usually do change are the legendaries (obviously), and the generics. Things like generic ground pokemon like Diglett and Sandshrew. Generic plants like Oddish and Bellsprout. Generic poisons like Grimer and Koffing. Other than their looks and specific move growth chart, these could be any other generic of their element. Also, certian pokemon have just been similar-replaced. Such as Meowth and Persian being replaced with Glameow and Purugly Sartly, Staravia, and Staraptor instead of Pidgey, Pidgeotto, and Pidgeot The actual Pikachu "replacement" I belive is a Parchirisu, or something like that. At the risk of insulting people, who really makes these pokemon part of their final team anyways? The closest I come (with the original) is using a Pidgey-Pidgeot until I get Articuno, cuz Articuno is the Bomb-diggity. As for diamond, I got a starly(pidgey's equivalent) and I'm completely happy with him and his steel wing attack as a Flying Pokemon. The one thing I have noticed that the new game is lacking (and maybe all are lacking) is a decent selection of fire pokemon. Ponyta has been available in the wild for some time, but no. Just no. I'll be more likely to equip my gyrados with fire blast. (i think that's possible) With the exception of ponyta and chimchar, I don't think i've even encountered from another trainer a different fire pokemon, which means I took down the Ice gym with my Luxray (Raichu +1 evo Equivalent?) With 3 Electric attacks, and one dark attack, single handedly beating down Lv 39s with all of his Lv 35-dom power. -------------------- If internal struggles were as enjoyable and glamorous as the self conflicted wars within video game characters, we would all be statues, reveling in perpetual self war. -Me Play me on Rock Band 2, GH-WT, or any other Xbox GH! On my first play through of my Game I used staraptor agianst Candice(Close Combat+ice+dark=Death) and wouldnt shinx kinda be like pichu? Also, some of the pokemon you get early on our quite good. Like Abra, Misdreavous, Shieldon/Cranidos, Etc.

Also, some of the pokemon you get early on our quite good. Like Abra, Misdreavous, Shieldon/Cranidos, Etc. Speaking of Shieldon/Cranidos: How awesome is fossil collecting! For those without the game, there is an "underground" area where you can essentially mine for spheres(to use in the underground like currency), evolution stones, various items (umm... ALL of my revives), and on occasion, you hit a fossil. Like the others, there is a building that has a fossil guy, you give him the fossil, leave the building, enter the building, and tada! new pokemon for you! As much as I like that, I think the clock should've been used. 24 hours to re-animate a fossil seems fair to me, instead of reviving 2 Cranidos in under 60 seconds And yes, Shinx is probably more like a dark pichu, I really don't think he learned a damaging elecric attack until he evolved either, I taught him thunder, but it was only after he evolved that he became a real powerhouse (no pun intended). But my reason for acutally posting is this: I caught Dialga. It seemed almost too easy (saying as I used Ultra Balls to spare the Master), but it was a match-up that I had to encounter after 2 boss battles (I had one pokemon with 32 HP left after I beat the boss. I've toyed with the three legendaries, but I couldn't get a capture using my whole arsenal. But... none of my status changes would work. Luxray never parylized, and Gyrados' Ice Fang Froze Uxie once, but he thawed before I could get him in the red Quote It's because anyone who's bothered to do any sort of research on the two games has realised that Dialga (the legendary you get first in Diamond) is so much cooler than Palkia (the legendary you get first in Pearl.) Does this mean that I will be able to get Palika, or am I gonna have to offer up my Dialga on the GTS to get what I want to fill my dex? Also, I bought a copy of FireRed to mill out Bulbasaurs, Charmanders, and Squirtles to trade to people. I need to get to the point in Diamond that I can actually do it, but I thought it seemed like fun -------------------- If internal struggles were as enjoyable and glamorous as the self conflicted wars within video game characters, we would all be statues, reveling in perpetual self war. -Me Play me on Rock Band 2, GH-WT, or any other Xbox GH! Shinx is a pretty solid electric, with decent speed and great attack, but the only problem with it is that most of the best electric attacks take special A instead of attack, so instead of Thunderbolt or Thunder it's better to stick with Spark and Thunder Fang. It's a little annoying, but it gets the job done and also makes him good for normal attacks and Crunch. The best electrics are still probably Raikou, Zapdos, and the new evolutions for Magneton and Electabuzz. Torterra is a beast. He's Grass/Ground, so his only real weaknesses without counters are Ice and Flying attacks, but he's one hell of a physical tank with great HP, great attack and defense, Leech Seed, and Curse. My only dilemma - if I definitely want to keep Leech Seed and Earthquake, do I keep Razor Leaf, Crunch, Curse, or Leaf Storm? Leaf Storm is good for a lone special-based attack, but I'd get more mileage out of Razor Leaf or Crunch. Also, Razor Leaf would get me STAB damage and also has 25 PP, way more than the other options. Oh well, I'll figure something out. I beat the first five Gym Leaders without much difficulty, using my ages-old strategy of beating the entire game with a rotation of six to eight pokemon, and then going back to catch and evolve everything I don't have. Torterra's a beast, Luxray and Staraptor are solid, and I'm still deciding between the rest of my lineup. I beat the first five gyms pretty much using only those first three; they surprisingly cover all of my bases except for maybe Ice and Dragon types. Oh, and if anyone wants any Bulbasaurs, Squirtles, Charmanders, Treeckos, Torchics, or Mudkips, I can breed them out for you. I have a ****TON of pokemon waiting for me in my copy of LeafGreen that are just waiting to be sent over to my copy of Diamond. I just need to wait a bit to get that all straightened out. I also know some people that are setting aside a Cyndaquil, Totodile, and Chikorita for me, so maybe those too. -------------------- |

My Kadabra levels fast b/c it's the kadabra you can trade for in-game. He's maybe lv 40 and my gyrados can kill lv 50s at lvl 35. I think my weakest is either my Staravia (not even a staraptor yet), or my Onix named Onyx. By the time you actually get to the rest of the gyms, you should be able to complete everything, walk-thru style. -------------------- If internal struggles were as enjoyable and glamorous as the self conflicted wars within video game characters, we would all be statues, reveling in perpetual self war. -Me Play me on Rock Band 2, GH-WT, or any other Xbox GH! Serebii.net has Eevee listed as a gift from some random person in the aftergame, and Ditto as a Swarm pokemon. You're going to have to wait a bit. And yeah, the game is pretty easy. I mean, I just caught Dialga and I haven't done any serious leveling-up or sidequesting the entire game, using only three pokemon in combat. The only time I remember having any trouble was against the Lucario in the third gym, but I spammed Curse for the win. My Dex has 121 pokemon seen, and I think once you see the first 150 in Sinnoh, you get the National Dex. Oh well, here I go. -------------------- |

So I have to ask... what is a swarm pokemon? I noticed on serebii.net that Farfetch'd is a swarm pokemon on route 221 (by the import place south of the prof's town). Is that the pokemon that come to the trees? and if so, dang I want a farfetch'd, cuz it's the only pokemon that can use false swipe that it seems worth using. And the legendaries would be much easier with a leave-you-with-1HP attack.
Also laz, I think there are only 151 shinoh pokemon. I think the national dex is just an elite 4 win away. They had swarm pokemon in Emerald, too. After you get the National dex, you can check a television report or something and then they'll name a swarm (for example, "there's a swarm of Farfetch'd on route 221!"), and then for the next few hours or so you'll be able to catch Farfetch'd on route 221. That's how swarms work.
And I'm pretty sure that getting the National Dex is different in this game. At least serebii thinks so. You have to see (not necessarily catch) the first 150 pokemon in the Sinnoh dex (#151 is Manaphy, which is some secret thing like Mew). -------------------- |

Alright, so right now i just beat Crasher Wake, having him be number 4.
My party consists of Level 25 Sheildon Level 26 Misdreavous, Monferno, Garydos(everyone seems to have one of those) Golbat, and Roselia. Once i reach Snowpoint, I was wondering, should i get snover or sneasle. Saying the fact that Leilong and Laszlow are like the 2 common posters, ill let you take care of this one. |

Snover or Sneasel? Well, good call on trying to get an Ice pokemon. Ice is a really nifty element, and when you inevitably fight dragons later on you'll probably need it.
But it's your call. Any pokemon is good. Some pokemon are better than others at certain things, but there really is no bad choice. Sneasel is Dark/Ice and with great Speed and Attack and Snover is Grass/Ice with good HP, Attack, and Special A. Sneasel doesn't learn many Ice attacks, bu Snover learns quite a few. Sneasel's final evolution, Weavile, is tricky to evolve (you need a special item) while Snover evolves into Abomasnow at level 40. Also, Weavile's final stats are significantly higher than Abomasnow's, so in the long run Sneasel is probably a better choice than Snover. But yeah, in the future, you should probably just look up the pokemon you're interested in on serebii.net and then use the info there to make your decision. That's what I did. I'm not actually a *real* pokemon encyclopedia or anything. -------------------- |

If I were to make a call... sneasel.
Because... Snowver is Grass/Ice. Probably the wierdest combo ever. Also, if you have the poketch app for the damage effectiveness, you will see that because both Ice and Grass are weak to fire, a simple ember will probably decimate him from a pokemon half his level. That, and every sneasel I've come up against has given me lots of grief, but... I have no fire pokemon (started with Piplup, and didn't want a Ponyta), and my only "Ice" that I have is my Gyrados' Ice Fang. I've actually been trying to avoid looking up too much information about this game (just so I can still have the "ZOMG" factor for myself Now that I think about it, my team is incredibly old-shool. I have replacements where necessary, but my team is my Piplup (Starter pokemon, not much you can do about that), luxray - which was the shinx I found at the red/blue equivalent point in which you would first find pikachu, Staravia- caught at lv 3 as a starly as my Pidgey equivalent, Kadabra, Gyrados, and Onix. Pokemon elements alone, this team has a LOT of holes tho. No fire, no grass, no true dark (Luxray has crunch, he kills all psychics And as for weaknesses, I have no real protection against Ice, (Kadabra, Luxray, and Empoleon have no strengths against ice, but at least they're not weak.) Dark gives me trouble, because dark is only weak to steel, and the only steel I have is Staravia's steel wing (40 power maybe, not that great), and it's just downright sad to see kadabra drop like a noob -------------------- If internal struggles were as enjoyable and glamorous as the self conflicted wars within video game characters, we would all be statues, reveling in perpetual self war. -Me Play me on Rock Band 2, GH-WT, or any other Xbox GH! Not bad, Leilong. I've cruised through the game with Torterra, Staraptor, and Luxray. Torterra knows Crunch, Wood Hammer, Leech Seed, and Earthquake, making him one tough physical tank that can wear people down by seeding. Luxray knows Crunch and a bunch of electric attacks, and Staraptor has a mix of Steel, Fighting, and Flying moves. The only real concerns that team has are strong Fire pokemon, strong Ice pokemon, and Dragon pokemon, as I have no Dragon or Ice attacks.
I want to remedy this situation by completing my lineup a little bit, so I've slowly been training two other pokemon that shall remain nameless. After I finish with them, I'll have a damn strong team ready to take on the Elite Four. -------------------- |

Quote (leilong @ 3rd May 2007 19:16) Gyrados was a dragon in name only. He was always Water/Flying. It always miffed me that he couldn't learn fly as a Flying, but if the pokedex ever mentioned him as a dragon, there would only be that reference, and the fact that he learns Dragon Rage (which sucked because it was a set value, and couldn't be not effective/super effective And I go back on my own words to say this: Since the newer games have come out, Gryados does learn a few more dragon attacks. AND... Dragon Rage does NOT suck. It has carried me through more than any other move. Why? becuase doing a set 40, ANYTHING faints in 5 moves or less (unless you Lv 100 stuff, then it may take 6 or 7). Also, is there any other fire pokemon in D/P besides Chimchar and Ponyta? I do want a fire, but Ponyta and Rapidash are just too "My Little Pony" for me. -------------------- If internal struggles were as enjoyable and glamorous as the self conflicted wars within video game characters, we would all be statues, reveling in perpetual self war. -Me Play me on Rock Band 2, GH-WT, or any other Xbox GH! I often wonder. :/ The only Fire Pokemon I've ever encountered is Ponyta, which I just gave in and caught since I didn't know if I'd ever encounter another.
I currently have Turtwig's second evolution, Kadabra, Luxray, Machoke, Misdreavus, and Driflim on my team. I have Wooper and Ponyta in reserve so I can level them when the time is right (I know I'll need Surf eventually). I currently have five gym badges. I can't wait to catch a Natu... -------------------- |

Once you get the national dex, you'll have basically hundreds of pokemon from the previous games running around everywhere, with swarms and special conditions and new evolutions and all that jazz. Unfortunately, I think that Ponyta is the only fire pokemon in the wild in D/P before you get the national dex. I'm going to have to make do without it.

Gahh I cant decide. Actually, i think ill go with snover. Even though it gets owned by fire, no one else on my team does. And Misdreavous takes care of all psychic and ghost pokemon( ghost is super effevtive against ghost, who knew) Anyway im happy and sad right now. My Golbat Evolved last night, at level 27. So basically im going to have to teach him some good moves, otherwise he will be very bad.

OK, I just took on the Elite Four for the first time, and it was a painful experience. My highest-level pokemon was at 50, while the WEAKEST pokemon of the FIRST E4 member was at level 53. I took out the first two of them without much trouble, mostly because I set up some favorable type matchups. The next two were much trickier. I was only able to beat both of them because I took out at least four pokemon using Leech Seed attrition wars, which should just not happen.
And the Champion was harder. She doesn't use a specific element, and has an annoyingly balanced and powerful team of six; with her lowest level at 61. My highest level was 52, as Torterra had gained three levels over the past four battles (he was at 49 at first). I only know she has six because I saw six icons at the upper-left; I had only killed the first one when I lost, and she switched between a Milotic and a Lucario to finish me off. But the point is, there is an enormous difficulty gap in between the eighth gym leader and the Elite Four / Champion. I hadn't done any serious leveling up throughout the course of the game, but now I definitely have to. Many of the elite four use attacks and types that cancel out the weaknesses of their signature type - for example, the E4 member that uses Psychic pokemon has at least three pokemon that can use strong Fighting, Ghost, and Dark attacks, presumably to take out your own Steels, Ghosts, Darks, and other Psychics. It's like that. I personally recommend that you hold off taking on the E4 until you have most of your pokemon in the 55-60 range. Then it should be easily done, but until then, go and train some more. -------------------- |

Quote (laszlow @ 16th May 2007 15:44) I personally recommend that you hold off taking on the E4 until you have most of your pokemon in the 55-60 range. Then it should be easily done, but until then, go and train some more. I don't like to lose, and I especially don't like it on my record against a computer, so I saved before entering the elite 4, and then took em on. I had the same experience as you did, exept I expended my entire team on the first guy's first 5 pokemon. I had one left alive, and he was gonna use his beautifly next, I said @#%! it, and shut off the game. Note: anyone who would want to play me person vs person, I would not use this cheap tactic against a human. I just don't see the point in tarnishing my record and losing my money against a computer. So I'm leveling now. As a side note, here is the team I took in against the E4 that failed so miserably: Lv 39 Kadabra Lv 42 Gyrados Lv 41 Onix Lv 43 Empoleon Lv 48 Luxray Lv 41 Staraptor @$$-handing doesn't even begin to explain how bad it was. My Kadabra is the one you trade for in-game, so he's leveling very fast, but everyone else is taking their time. On top of that, I'm still trying to find the perfect team to take against mesprit. I finally tracked it down, only to have it flee the battle on me. I caught a golbat that has mean look, which would lock out the run-away part, but I'm trying to think of the perfect Mesprit hunt team (mostly darks and steels), because I'm gonna catch all of these flippin legendaries if it kills me, and if I don't have to use my master ball, all the better. Also, I saved the game right before I encountered mesprit, and when I reloaded, it spawned somewhere else, so you actually have to hunt for it every time, even if you almost had it -------------------- If internal struggles were as enjoyable and glamorous as the self conflicted wars within video game characters, we would all be statues, reveling in perpetual self war. -Me Play me on Rock Band 2, GH-WT, or any other Xbox GH! Tip for catching the legendaries: hunt at night, and use Dusk Balls. Dusk Balls are more than twice as good as Ultra Balls if you use them after 8 PM; I got lucky and only need to throw two of them to catch Uxie. Uxie has high Defense and Special D, while Azelf has high Attack and Special A. It took me three or four tries to catch Azelf, because he kept raising his Special A and killing off my team before I could whittle his HP low enough.
I encountered Mesprit once, and managed to take out maybe half of his life with my lead pokemon before he ran. I should do what you did and catch a Golbat with Mean Look, so I can properly catch him. -------------------- |

I started perusing Serebii.net I really hope that there will be an Arceus event somewhere around me. I want that pokemon bad! You can change his element by having him hold the different plates that you collect throughout the game. That and a Mew would be nifty to have, but the only way to get a mew stems from pokemon emrald, and I don't know if I want to buy yet another game, and beat it for that. My kadabra is now at Lv 53. Everyone else is pretty much where they were, but I surfed the water by florama town and found an iron refinery that that the TM for flamethrower in it. I haven't used it yet, but it was pretty cool to find. I had hoped that the refinery would have fire pokemon in it, but that was just wishful thinking I was reading that D/P have the most available pokemon to find tho. After you have the national dex, you can capture 425 of the pokemon in a single game without outside/backward trading. The only things that really need to be backward transferred is the starters, the legendaries, and the secrets. Source: Serebii.net Edit I was the last poster, so I'm just gonna edit this in... I caught Uxie... WITH A POKEBALL!!! I was just screwing around biding my time hoping for a better chance with a timer ball, and I chucked a pokeball at him and caught him! His HP was incredibly low, but it was still pretty amazing the way it went down This post has been edited by leilong on 18th May 2007 09:58 -------------------- If internal struggles were as enjoyable and glamorous as the self conflicted wars within video game characters, we would all be statues, reveling in perpetual self war. -Me Play me on Rock Band 2, GH-WT, or any other Xbox GH!
