Ohh, I've seen Serial Experiments Lain, too. I liked it, but I don't think I understood it very well.

Since you're in France, you may want to look into fansubs from the internet. Most are downloadable, but there are sites that will send you the anime on a CD, and you pay them a couple of bucks through paypal or something.

Oh dear, I didn't mention Fruits Basket, did I? I love that anime. There is just so much that can be forgotten :-P

Two pages worth of stuff in the General Topics and I didn't notice this once?

Anywho, here's my list.

Cowboy Bebop - Uh, hello?  Cowboy Bebop is one of the greatest animes...ever...evar.  The characters are great, the art is amazing, and the plot is awesome.  If you haven't seen this yet, I pity you.

Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memories - Ok, so Kou is a whiney little stupid head that couldn't see that Nina was practically paying him to screw her.  Ok, so most of the other Gundam series have better storylines.  It's all made up for the fact that one of my favorite characters, Anavel Gato, is the main villian.  The art is also one of the (if not the) best art in all the Gundam Series.

Rurouni Kenshin - Gonna have to go with SM on this one.  The Anime is horrible compared to the Manga.  Not to mention the dub is disgusting.  Plus the Manga makes Aoshi look ten times sexier, which is exactly what he deserves.

Trigun - Believe or not, I saw this before Cartoon Network butchered it and made it its love slave! "What?  Before Cartoon Network?  How is that possible Uncle Kappa?"  You'll all understand when you're older, kids, Cartoon Network doesn't introduce things first.  "This is too much to handle!  Cartoon Network has the greatest Anime in the history of television channels!" ...Ok, I'm done.  This is a good series, I have to say...but it could've been so much better.  The last handful of episodes right before the ending were amazing (where Vash fought the Gung-ho Guns).  Before and after those episodes were only ok.

Jubei-chan the Ninja Girl - Well, I've only seen about 5 episodes (which is almost half of the series), but it stands as one of the funniest things I've ever seen, anime or not.  The characters are just great, I can't get enough of them.

Yesh.  But I think I missed some.  Oh, GTO is good, Tenchi is cool, and I like a lot of other Gundam series.  I've watched more Anime than that, but I guess they weren't good enough for me to remember what they are.  I've seen all the Cartoon Network stuff, and some of the shows are money (CB, Trigun, etc) but the dub is awful and the amount they cut out isn't right.  The others...Inu Yasha, Hack Sign, DBZ, Yu Yu Hakusho, and so on, aren't bad.  Just not good enough to make my list of goodness.  I guess if I forgot anything I'll post again, or something.

I stand as one of the few anime fans in existence who just doesn't like Evangelion.  Something about its vague plot and characterizations mixed with a veritable butchering of half-philosophy left a bad taste in my mouth.  But maybe I'm just crazy.

And I almost forgot to mention the Samurai Pizza Cats!  Who can forget the zany antics of Speedy Cerviche, Polly Esther, Guido Anchovie, and the rest of the gang!  It stands as one of my fondest memories.  The sheer, absurd hilarity and the loveable characters leaves me dumbfounded as to how no DVD re-release of the series exists today.

Thank you Super Moogle for reminding me of the Samourai Pizza Cats : one of my favorite anime, back when Iwas very little.
Due to the number of people writing about it, I downloaded the first episode of .Hack//Sign : it is in fact really great. It will take me some time before I get to see it all, I don't have a really fast connection (I found it in Kazaa if anyone is interested, in english subtitles). Big thank you to all the people of the forum, who made another fan all the way across the Atlantic Ocean...

I have to agree with SM on Evangelion i never really liked it
much either, i dont see whats so great about it, everyone says
the ending is awesome but its confusing, ive it like 5 times and
i still dont get it. then they say OH the movies are different
ending that you can understand, but the ending to the movies
are even more confusing.

One thing to say about Evangelion..
Vandread is 100 times better than that.

My first series to collect was Escaflowne;
I first encountered the series on the FOX network during the kid's programming time, and was heartbroken when the story was cut --
However, it was cut for a good reason, mind you. The plot gets a little involved to be on children's morning lineups after the first handful of episodes.
Anyway, Esca never returned to TV, so when I saw that Bandai released sub and dub DVDs in the US, I went and bought them right away.

Well I havent watched much anime but I did like Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, Outlaw Star, all the Tenchi seires, Gundam (my favorite), some of the other dumb Gundam spinoffs, and Yu Yu Hakuso.  I think they were all pretty good.

Ooh, I used to be such an anime junkie!

Sailor Moon:  I think we all know what this show is.  ;)  The dub is really silly, but it was my gateway drug of anime.

Fushigi Yuugi:  OMG this G4M3 20X02z.  Okay, I'm done now.  No, but seriously, this is the best show ever.  It's got romance, drama, excitement, cheezy sex, and goofiness.  It makes you laugh, it makes you cry...only it really does.  My silly boyfriend cried during the last episode.  I would have mocked him more if I hadn't been crying, too.

Magic Knights Rayearth:  Probably about on the level of Sailor Moon, but I don't like the Clamp animation style as much.

And now I'll just list the rest without saying anything about them:
Ranma 1/2, Ayashi no Ceres, Evangelion, Nadesico, Trigun, Flame of Recca, Escaflowne, Love Hina, Agent Aika, Lodoss...

Actually, if anyone's looking to try out any of these before buying them, I might be able to burn a few episodes onto VCD or something.  Or, if anyone wants to actually pay me, I could hook them up with an entire season.  Or something, you know, whatever.   :E

I was hoping more people had seen Outlaw Star, it was definitely a great anime, probably my favorite. Only about 25 eps long, but they all packed a good punch. Another good anime that I watch that no one mentioned is The Guyver: Bio-Booster Armor which was interesting to say the least. A rather violent anime, much like Ninja Scroll(which is also a very good anime), and it was only 12 eps long but it was still worth the watch. And it seems not too many ppl here are fans of Dragon Ball or DBZ, but I love it. That's just me tho  :p

I would've liked Outlaw Star a lot more if it wasn't for the ending, which was pretty weak.  I mean, I'm glad that...
SPOILER ALERT!  Highlight to view:
They all get to live happily ever after going on wild adventures on the Outlaw Star, but the whole secret of the Galactic Leyline was just some cheap cop-out.  Alien technology that controls the universe?  Lame.

Nevertheless, I must admit that the characters were great, and a majority of the plot was fantastic.

I believe it has 26 episodes. Cartoon Network only showed 25
episodes because the hot springs episode had to many adult
themes in it.

that episode was actually pretty funny.  ^_^

I think DBZ had some of the greatest anime episodes ever.  For example, when Goku becomes a Super Sayian in the fight with Frieza; or when Gohan's true power is unleashed in his battle with Perfect Cell.

As well, the episode where Gohan finally defeats Cell is one to always be remebered.  Brings a tear to by eye every time.

However, contrary to my high regard for such memorable episodes, I beleive the last 50 or so (Buu saga) were very poorly done, in terms of story and plot.

Dragon Ball rocks, in all types (except GT, don't like that >_< )! The episodes you mentioned are all wonderful, and yes, Buu saga was a little screwed up.

Dragon Ball has generally got a poor and repetive plotline and story, but the action is definitely the tops! Don't forget the battle between Piccolo and Android #17 in the Cell saga. And the battle between Vegeta and Goku in the Buu saga. 8)

Now, see, the thing is that these aren't "episodes," they're a series of 3 or 4 episodes all centered around one thing.  That's one of the problems with DBZ, they beat around the bush for days until finally solving the problem.

I mean, one episode you have this guy turn invincible and the other guy is obviously screwed.  Great, he beats him next episode.  NO.  He has to go through lots and lots and lots of dialogue, fight for half a minute, then talk some more.  Finally, the guy who's screwed finds some way to indirectly beat the invincible one and this may include a time limit.  Say, 3 minutes before the universe explodes or something.  Well, instead of taking 3 minutes to resolve this, or at least just one episode, they stretch this 3 minute problem to 2 hours of 4 useless episodes that say the same thing over and over again.  Unless you're devoted to DBZ, you won't have the patience to find out what happens next.

The only reason DB/Z/GT didn't make my list is because it was lowered to the status of Saturday morning Cartoon.
And then kept getting pushed down.

Wow, I couldn't agree more. That's why I read the manga and stopped paying attention to the show. The show also adds some things that weren't even part of the manga. I love Dragon Ball, but I have to agree that the TV show is a bit ridiculous at some points (battle with Frieza, anyone?)

I seriously believe everything from the Heaven's Tournament to the end of DBGT is crappy.  Ending Dragon Ball after the Cell saga would have been a fitting end to the series, but no, people got greedy.  They tried to milk as much as they could out of the old cash cow, and produced total bull.  Buu saga?  More like Deus Ex Machina saga!

ya and theres also this, they can fly, and they can fly faster then
airplanes and jets and stuff, but it still somehow takes them
3 episodes to finally reach their destination, and they always
seem to arrive right when the bad invincable guy was just
about to finish off the last fighter.
and then theres the villians, they always seem to be alot stronger
than the good guys, and then when the good guys reach a
level just a little bit higher than the bad guy, someone always has to say
"OMG I NEVER SEEN SUCH INCREDIBLE POWER BEFORE! ITS MADNESS!"
and then the bad guys go "oh no im gonna die now cause I was
toying with you this whole time instead of trying to kill you"
now you guys are saying, well if they killed them earlier there
wouldnt be a series! ya well dont forget that this is dbz and they
can just get wished back. I swear goku dies so many times in that
series im starting not to care if he dies or not.

well thats just my opinion about the show..
man if the show brings tears to your eyes then go watch
trigun, thats has lots of sad parts. (incase you werent joking about
that)

I'm adding another show on my favorite list. Due to talks with some co-workers, I borrowed from a friend episodes from "RahXephon". So far, it's great (I'm on to the 18th episode), it looks like Evangelion on the beginning (a teenager forced into a giant robot), and then goes another way. Has anyone ever seen it ? (I personnaly watched a french fansub's version, but I know there is an english subtitled version)

P.S : 100th post. I surprise myself.

No, that was just a hoax. Some anime manga fan decided to draw that one picture of Goku with silver hair, and all the rest of the pictures (gohan, vegeta etc.) are regular pictures that were doctored and just changed their hair or something stupid like that. It was cleared up years ago. Can't believe that's still going around.

Also, the reason the whole Frieza thing was so dragged out was because it was going to be the end of the whole Dragon Ball series. It would've been a fitting one too if you ask me. Goku's nemesis Vegeta is killed, Goku becomes the legendary Super Saiya-Jin, and Frieza, the big evil guy of the universe is defeated. What more could you ask for? The cell saga was still good i guess, but then it started falling off with the Buu thing, and the show became way too repetitive.

The clouds ran away, opened up the sky
And one by one I watched every constellation die
And there I was frozen, standing in my backyard
Face to face, eye to eye, staring at the last star
I should've known, walked all the way home
To find that she wasn't here, I'm still all alone

Whoo! Anime topic! Let the ranting and gushing begin!!

Okay. My number one favorite anime is Record of Lodoss War. The 13-episode long series (is that the OAV? I'm never quite sure), not the prequel or the sequel or anything like that. Art is gorgeous, characters are great (Woodchuck and Orson forever!!), music is lovely, plot is intriguing, and all that good stuff.

In no particular order, here are some of my other favorites. I'll try to keep the list short; there are so many good ones!

Key the Metal Idol. It irks me to no end that I still have yet to see the very beginning and the very end of this series, but what I have seen absolutely takes my breath away. Definitely one of the more dark and surreal shows out there.

Outlaw Star. Who doesn't love a good space opera?? tongue.gif Some of the most likeable characters ever created, in my opinion, as well as some of the best villains. I played Harry MacDougall for a while on an Outlaw Star bulletin-board RPG. Ahh, Harry...the epitome of 'psychotic bishounen'. I love this man to pieces, but I would never ever want him within 20 miles of me in real life. biggrin.gif

Cowboy Bebop. Of COURSE I love Cowboy Bebop. Seen all the episodes and the movie, and have the first soundtrack and the movie soundtrack. I cosplayed as Ed at FanimeCon this past year, and also as Electra from the movie. Oh yeah, and I have a shirt that shows that famous scene from Episode 5, with Spike and Vicious facing off in front of the rose window in the cathedral. Sigh...

Slayers. This is a great foil to Record of Lodoss War--equally high fantasy, but making fun of itself at the same time. This is also one of the few series I've seen where the dub does an excellent job of translating all those weird puns into English. smile.gif

Fushigi Yuugi. I need to see more of this. I've only seen the first few episodes, but I'm absolutely fascinated by it. Must...watch...more!

Escaflowne. Again, need to see more. I love the fact that Hitomi is your typical schoolgirl, but she's FAR from a creampuff...oh yeah, and Folken drool drool droooooool. wub.gif

Sailor Moon. Yep. While Ronin Warriors was the first anime that I ever really got into, I think Sailor Moon really got me interested in anime as a whole. Because it was with Sailor Moon that I realized, hey, there are different versions! And this American one sucks!! *giggle* I'm almost glad they never translated the Stars series into English...I just can't imagine how they'd try to explain the Sailor Starlights.

Tenchi, in particular Tenchi Universe. One reason. Nagi. Plus there were all those hilarious Star Wars references in the last episode (was it the last? I know it was near the end, if not theend...), right down to "Those rebel scum. Will they never learn?" After that, I like Tenchi in Tokyo, and then Tenchi Muyo!. The thing that amuses me about Tenchi in Tokyo is that I have no problem believing that a cute little bunny-cat-thing can turn into a giant spaceship, but the instant that same bunny-cat-thing turns into a big pink rabbit mech, I go, "Yeah RIGHT!!"

Dragon Half. I wish there were more than two episodes available...this is the funniest series I have ever seen, hands down.

Read or Die. I've only seen the end of this, and I've recently learned that there are only three episodes. But the concept is so cool. We so rarely get to see an anime superhero show.

Petshop of Horrors. Oh. My. Goodness. This is one of the most amazingly wonderful things I've ever seen. It's stylish and beautiful and creepy and unearthly and surreal and sexy, all at the same time. And Count D is, without a doubt, the most adorable bishounen in existence. And not in the sense of "oh, he's so hot, I wanna sleep with him", but rather in the sense of "he's...so...CUTE!! I wanna cuddle him and pinch his cheeks!"

...That ended up being longer than I'd expected. Oh well. Um. Don't kill me? blush.gif
