News April 16, 2007

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Virginia Tech's campus police chief said at least 22 are dead after a shooting at the university, and at least 21 more are wounded.

Aimee Kanode, a freshman from Martinsville, Va., told The Associated Press that the shooting happened on the fourth floor of the dorm, one floor above her room. Kanode said students are "locked in our dorms surfing the Internet trying to figure out what's going on."

This is said to be the worst shooting at a school in US history. sad.gif

It is indeed the worst, by at least six thus far. As I understand it they're still clearing rooms to verify.

This has been bouncing around chat for a few hours now, most recently a debate of logistics. I for one am curious as to the background of such a shooter.

Right now, a Polish information TV channel claims, that there are about 32 people killed...

I wonder if there'll be any information about motives this time. In most such cases nobody knows why the whole thing happened. I feel sorry for all the students and staff at the University, not only the ones that died.

My sources say that at least 22 are killed and at least 28 are injured, and that this is the worst campus shooting in American history. The accused gunman is someone named William Morva.

I know at least thirty or forty Tech students, personally. I just hope that none of my friends were victims....

I think we all do.

It's actually up to at least 31 and 28 now according to CNN on the TV in my office.

You have to sort of wonder what these people are thinking. What makes a man wake up and kill 30 other people?

Lasz, I don't know that they were talking about the guy that killed all the people when the said William Morva. That looks like it could be a reference to the guy who killed the hospital guard. How could somebody face murder charges when he's dead?

No idea. I just read a CNN article on the subject awhile ago and it said that he was "the main suspect" or words to that effect.

So far I dunno if anyone I know was hurt, but here's something posted from the Somethingawful.com forums:

I heard that when the guy first went there, he was asking for his girlfriend. that is just not cool, who would do something like that and for what reason? sad.gif
questions that may never be answered.
hopefully this will be the last one even though we have said that about others. so far 33 are dead, but some may still die on the way to or in the hospital.

Having experienced a school shooting myself (though nowhere near as massive or brutal as this one) I can imagine what it must be like for those unfortunate enough to be caught in this, be it victims at the school, worried friends and family and so on. It's tragic that so many lives can and have been taken so easily.

For the life of me I can't understand how going to school with a weapon and taking the lives of other students, professors and staff makes any sense at all, though I don't want to hear anything about reasons/motivations, as soon as that sort of stuff comes out, the person with the gun is always made into some kind of tragic victim themselves and that's downright insulting to those killed.

This news report just turned my day into a bad one. My teacher and the class were watching it on CNN during my Social Studies. Sad, sad fate.

The kids' parents were having hopes for their children to graduate, start a family, and move on with their lives, etc. Too bad this had to happen to "good" people, assuming various out of the 32 were.

The bastard is lucky he died too, because I am sure he'd get alot of felony charges and most likely earn a life sentece and/or an execution for killing 31-32 people (I can't recall if he was one of the 32 that died or not, or was it 33 total including the gunman himself?)

I'm lucky to have never had experienced this around my schools, or ever will. But does anyone know why he wanted to kill those students for? It seems like he was just trying to feel almighty or just recklessly shooting for no reason.

When I heard about it, it was just 1 dead and 8 wounded. Then my dead said 22, and the official count is 33. I know a few Tech students as well, so I pray that they are safe.

we as people are now trained to deal with alot of emergencies... terrorism, fires, tornados, bio-terrorism, sex-offenders, cyber-crime, ect.....

Why arent students and teachers more thoroughly trained with dealing with these situations.... or better yet, trying to diffuse them before they happen...

in the end, nobody will go and take the blame for what happend, they will blame the parents, the teachers, the media, Marylin Manson....

...but mabye the government should step up for a change....take a little responsibiliy for these kind of things.... just a little..... i mean, why shouldnt the most powerful organization in the world take more responsibility with the power it holds...... am i right???

Beyond background checking and planning for once it began, I'm not sure what impact the government could have had on this.

On a slightly related subject to the last post, they were saying on the news that students didn't find out about the 1st shooting until about a 1/2 hour before the second one. Many (including myself) wonder if the second one could have been prevented if they knew about it.

What the hell are you talking about, 'Ugh'? That dude made a comment that was wildly inappropriate and Laszlow (Who has friends at VT) and Guru (Who's friend is in the ICU) responded in kind. In my opinion the troll got what he deserved, making such a crass comment at a moment like that is not acceptable. And for you to come along and act all high and mighty is not acceptable either. A tragedy has occured and it has affected people drastically. There will be strong emotion involved and sometimes people will feel a tad pissed off when someone (7upac) makes a crass and insensitive comment. It is even worse that it is from a relative newcomer to the forums. I understand that he may have simply been trying to use humor in order to seperate himself from the incident (which is a common coping technique) but the comment was still highly inappropriate. If you have an issue with the visceral response which came from Lasz and Guru, fine, but there is no reason to be presumptious about it. Get off your high horse for once.

But seriously, this is terrible. I don't get why people around me haven't even been paying attention to this, it's really terrible.

Thanks for that. I didn't know he had been ID'd yet.

No possible motive released yet, but some seem to think it was jealousy stemming from his girlfriend and a member/student of the german class that got attacked. That was the rumor on CNN anyway. I'll try to find a link to that.
