I want to qualify starting out: I searched "gambit" on any date in the general squenix gaming section before I started this topic. I saw nothing dedicated to just the gambits, and since I bought FFXII like 24 hours ago, I'm not far enough in that I want all the spoilers, I just want to talk about gambit tactics. What sort of things work? What are your favorites? Are there any you have to find that are worth going waaaay out of your way for?
Also, I understand that by the end of the game, these get really extravagant, so some progression into what became the final commands would be appreciated too. (i.e. before I had the slots for *ability A* and *ability B* together, I used *ability C* instead.) These seem like they could be an art form. And... it's logic! I haven't played FFXII in around a month, but as I recall, I had a lot of luck with:
Possible spoilers: highlight to view Ally: Any - Phoenix Down Ally: Any - Remedy (or Esuna until you get all the Remedy Lores) Ally: HP < 40% - Curaga Ally: Any - Haste Ally: Any - Protect Ally: Any - Shell Foe: Nearest - Attack Ally: MP > 10% - Ether Foe: Haste/Protect/Shell - Dispel Foe: Flying - Aero ...or something similar. This setup loses points for making you waste a lot of time casting magic (usually at useless or inopportune times), but you stay buffed, which I like. I'll try and get into my log tomorrow and see which I'm leaving off. lol
I didn't mean put the gambit combos in spoilers, just that if you're saying, "I beat boss so-and-so with this gambit, man! I would never have guessed him to be a bad-guy!" Spoiler alert that, and anything else that happens near the end of the game. Sorry for the confusion. -------------------- If internal struggles were as enjoyable and glamorous as the self conflicted wars within video game characters, we would all be statues, reveling in perpetual self war. -Me Play me on Rock Band 2, GH-WT, or any other Xbox GH! I'm almost 10 hours in at the mo'.
What currently seems to work is having one person cast cure if ally's health <70% and another use potion if ally's health <40% Otherwise have everyone do physical attacks. Sometimes I will cut in to steal something or use a bit of black magic on certain monsters. I'm sure I will have to change this soon, but so far, it's working well, and is great fun. -------------------- 'Let that be a lesson to all oppressive vegetable sellers.' |

I think I'm just slightly farther than fatman timewise, but behind storywise (I spent tons of time hunting and exploring. I just had penelo join my party after the Ashe rescue, and I've done all available hunts, as well as exposed as much of my maps as possible without getting myself killed.
My usual setup right now is: Ally:any --> Raise/Phoenix Down Ally:HP Critical --> Potion Ally:HP < 40 --> Cura Foe:HP Critical --> Poach Foe:HP = 100% --> Steal (On Vaan only) Foe:Nearest Visible --> Attack Ally:HP < 80 --> Cura I made Ashe my first character almost entirely devoted to White/Green magic, her setup is slightly different. Little changes like HP<70 in the 3rd slot, she also recovers what status ailments I have the ability to fix... I NEED MORE GAMBITS! The ones to fix blind, silence, and posion would be best. I didn't read any of the manuals, and there wasn't a very good tutorial on the gambits, because I didn't know about the Any --> Phoenix Down thing until I saw everyone else using it. I guess it makes sense, but I had tried the Self --> Charge and it got stuck in an infinite loop because it fails. Is there a Self:MP < 20% target you can get later? -------------------- If internal struggles were as enjoyable and glamorous as the self conflicted wars within video game characters, we would all be statues, reveling in perpetual self war. -Me Play me on Rock Band 2, GH-WT, or any other Xbox GH! Yes, and thank you for bringing that up, because I realised that I never had a Self-Ether Gambit at all.
There is a Self MP < 10% - Charge Gambit, and it's very handy because if it doesn't work, you only lose a little MP, and you'll keep doing it until you're above 10% MP. That's the one I was using. -------------------- You don't scare me, you talking blobs of oozing slop! I am impervious to pain! |
