Couple of Questions

OK, I know this is my third topic in like a week, but I figured that now that I joined the forum I might as well get all my questions answered biggrin.gif OK, so...

1. What do al the different traits on a character's status page mean? (i.e. luck, dexterity, strength, attack, attack%, etc.) I have a vague idea, but I could never find a specific description of what they actually do, so I was wondering if anyone here knew.

2. Where exactly is the island with the little cactus man that I can morph into a tetra elemental? The only description I found was something like "On the beach of an island south of the western continent" or something...does anyone have anything more specific?

Thanks a bunch!

1. luck determines your chance to hit and hit with a critical strike, dexterity determines your speed(how fast your time bar fills up) strength determines your attack power attack is maxed out at 255 and is how much damage you do attack% is the chance your weapon has to hit although it is much less when using deathblow however weapons like vincent's long barrel r which is 255% attack% will never miss with deathblow same for tifa's god hand.

2. to my knowledge it's south middle of the world , the island is not located on the map it's kept hidden but fly the highwind around near the south back and forth up and down eventually you'll see a desert type island that's where cactuars are.

1. Thanks, but I listed those specific traits just as examples; I meant I'd like descriptions of all of them. The entire list is strength, dexterity, vitality, magic, spirit, luck, attack, attack%, defense, defense%, magic atk, magic def, magic def%. So since you explained luck, dexterity, strength, attack, and attack%, the ones I'm missing are vitality, magic, spirit, defense, defense%, magic atk, magic def, and magic def%. More specifically, what exactly is the difference between say, strength and attack, if they both determine how much damage you inflict? Or the difference between magic and magic atk if they both determine how much damage your magic inflicts? Sorry for being so picky, I've just been wondering about this for quite a while now.

2. Thanks a lot! You're right, it is due south of Cosmo Canyon.

Vitality - Determines how much your max HP increases when you level up
Defense - How resistant you are to physical attacks (higher defense = less damage taken)
Defense% - How likely you are to dodge a physical attack
Magic Defense% - How likely you are to dodge a magical attack

Attack is a weapon trait and Strength is a character trait. The exact amount of damage you can deal with a physical attack depends on several things, but those two are the big ones. The bottom line: just equip the most powerful weapon to do the most damage smile.gif

Admittedly I don't know what Spirit is nor do I know the difference between Magic and Magic Attack.

Doesn't Magic determine your MP, or how much it goes up by when you level up (a bit like vitality, except for MP instead of HP?)

And Magic Attack determine how much damage is done by spells?

If so, a comprehensive list would be:

Character Stats
Strength - Character's base damage (combines with Attack to calculate damage dealt with physical attacks)
Dexterity - Character's base speed
Vitality - Character's base defense (combines with Defense to calculate damage taken from physical attacks)
Magic - Character's base magic power - affects damage done by magic attacks (Combines with Magic Atk to calculate damage dealt with magic attacks)
Spirit - Character's base magic defense - affects damage taken by magic attacks (Combines with Magic def to calculate damage received from magic attacks)
Luck - Affects chance to hit with a critical strike and chance to evade.

Weapon Stats
Attack - Affects damage done with physical attacks
Attack% - Chance to hit with physical attacks
Defense - How resistant you are to physical attacks
Defense% - How likely you are to dodge a physical attack
Magic atk - Damage done with magic attacks?
Magic def - How resistant you are to magic attacks
Magic def% - How likely you are to dodge a magic attack

Spirit increases your magic defense the more spirit you have the higher your magical defense will be. say if you have 255 spirit your magic defense will DEFINETELY be 255 meaning even if ruby weapon casts ultima at you it'll do a pathetic 100 damage or so muhahaha. oh and vitality doesn't increase ur hp as you lvl ( as far as I know ) it increases your defense. so the higher your vitality the higher your defense it does not however effect defense% and magic determines how much damage you do with spells and summons. And as for the difference between strength and attack - there is none they both stack to make you do more damage. Like some guy said earlier magic and defense% is your chance to dodge magical and physical attacks and defense and magic defense the higher it is the less damage you take from those types of attacks. Hope this covers it, anymore questions just ask.

Strength, Dexterity, Vitality, Magic, Spirit and Luck are your characters basic stats. The ones below are linked to them. For example, Strength links to Attack, Spirit to Magic Defence, and Vitality to Defence. Luck equates with the other stats as well as Critical Hit %, but I don't know which ones and to what extent - I remember Defence % being one. I do know that Speed increases your Defense %. Your weapons and armour also contribute to the final stats to produce your ultimate attack damage or defence. Hence the reason you don't get Defence % Sources from the Gelnika.

Base Stats (affected only by materia and accessories)
-Strength = base physical damage
-Magic = base magic damage
-Vitality = base physical defence
-Spirit = base magic defence
-Dexterity = determines speed at which timer bar fills
-Luck = determines chances of critical hits and evasions

Battle Stats (affected by Base stats, weapons, and armor)
-Attack = physical damage done (Strength + Weapon + [Luck only on Critical Hit])
-Attack% = accuracy of physical attacks (Dexterity + Luck + Weapon)
-Defence = defence to physical damage (Vitality + Armor)
-Defence% = chance of evading physical attack (Dexterity + Luck + Armor)
-MagAtk = magic damage done (Magic [Note: I don't believe that any weapon or armor affects this stat])
-MagDef = defence to magic damage (Spirit + Armor)
-MagDef% = chance of evading magic attack (Dexterity + Luck + Armor)

I believe that is everything battle related. I don't know much about the leveling up stats.

I remember hearing somewhere that there was a glitch in FFVII the caused the armor to not do anything. That your defense is determined by Vitality and not by Defence. Anyone know how much truth there is behind that?

Yes, but not quite. It's called the magic defense glitch which causes the character's magic defense to be determined by his spirit and does not include the armor's magic defense into the equation , you can find a glitch list here

You may be thinking of the magic defense glitch which makes the Spirit stat used instead of MagDef, making it a deadweight stat where armor's concerned. Not sure if it's been fixed on subsequent reissues, but that's the only glitch I've heard on that end.
