Hi there, I'm new here and have a question.
I'm playing this game for the first time, and I really like the character Galuf, and a friend of mine told me that he'll die later in the game, so I looked it up and it was true ![]() I'm wondering if there's any way to keep him alive? If I get him to level 99? Or by cheating? I'm willing to try everything. |

Unfortunately, no, there is no way to keep Galuf within the confines of the game.
If you really wanted to, and didn't mind a messed-up storyline, you could find the event code that took Galuf out of your party and added Cara and just change it so that never happens. Of course, the game would progress as if he had died, and it would really not be worth it. You could also overwrite Cara's sprites with Galuf's but then you run into palette issues. In short, he dies for good and you can't stop him. Oh, and your friend is a terrible person for telling you that. ![]() -------------------- Is PJ |

Very bad person
![]() The above two ways are the only feasable ways for you to accomplish it, unless you have a fairly good knowledge of hacking ROMs. No game genie code or anything like that will do it. |

RuneLancer is the event guy in our hack so far. We figured out where it is and how everything works. I'm sure he'll see this post tomorrow and respond with something, most likely saying how it wouldn't be feasible to do for a bunch of reasons, but who knows. He might surprise us.
You really should play through the game first, though, just to see the way it was SUPPOSED to happen. You never know, maybe your friend and all of us are just pulling your leg and he never dies at all. The only way to find out is to beat the game. ![]() -------------------- Is PJ |

Yeah, most people just choose to use Cara, after reaching val Castle.

What about the classes Cara gets that Galuf dies before he gets? What then?

Actually, there is a hidden chain of events where Galuf lives. I stumbled on this this morning while sorting out a few things. I haven't done it in-game yet but judging from the event scripts, it's possible and can be done if you know how.
First you have to master every job. Which isn't too hard (though tedious.) The toughest one would be mimic (yes, it can be obtained in the first world, but it takes some timing.) The game has a check for job data and branches during one of the forest of Mua events (I won't spoil it for the OP but it's the one right before the boss.) You still lose Galuf after World 2 ends though, and end up with Cara. So it's kind of pointless. ![]() If you're wondering how to get Mimic in world 1, you need to resurect General Leo with the Black materia. ![]() Moderator Edit lololol lmao roflmbfao hahahahaha lolz ... If someone posts asking how to get the Black Materia in FFV, you die. ![]() The real way to do this is by changing Galuf's character ID (I forgot how big a character structure is in WRAM, but if you put Cara in slot 1 and put in 7E055002 I think you get him. Could be 03 or 01... I think it's 02 though. Mess with the values a bit. The only difference between Galuf and Cara (other than the sprites) is Galuf gets more VIT and Cara more MAG (I think, something like that...) Otherwise, like all other characters, they're virtually identical. The game also has a special function that treats Galuf and Cara's IDs as the same, so any data Galuf had carries over - job EXP, levels, etc.. So you have no reason to worry about losing him - technically his sprite just changes and that's it. ![]() This post has been edited by karasuman on 26th February 2007 20:23 -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

I think it's best to just stick with Cara. Even if you return Galuf, it'll never be the same again. And his death was what made Exdeath such a great villain. I think it's best to just leave him be. Cara has very good speed, and usually Galuf/Cara are my black mages/summoners/geomancers/time mages/red mages/blue mages, so atleast I wouldn't have to redo the jobs for them again
![]() Besides he doesn't even have a Mimic sprite IIRC. |

(Just a quick specification because I started the post a little too seriously - the above was a joke.

The other option that you have that would border on obscenely tedious, and probably the least obtrusive: download tile layer pro and take all of galuf's sprite tiles and overlay them on top of krile's (if you're playing on a pc, otherwise, i'm out of ideas). It would only be a meager several hundred tiles, and it only took me 2 hours to work with 48, so a solid day of find-drag-scroll-drag-scroll-repeat would be worth it to you. Important note:
Quote And no, he doesn't have a mimic sprite. There's literally a blank spot in the graphics for that. This is very correct. But... I managed to makeshift one for my personal use (the above couple hours) which can be read in detail here. If image is all you're looking for, then TLP is your friend. your very annoying, slow, and hard to see friend. But it could be worse: it could be that the only way to do it is manually through constantly recompiled code like the muk that Silverlance immerses himself in. Oh and SL - you forgot that to get the black materia, you have to keep Cecil a dark knight until that point in the game, and then use his GF to draw it off of Kuja. Actually, Leilong, overlaying Cara's sprites with Galuf's can be done in a matter of seconds if you have a hex editor. You just open up TLP, find where his graphics begin and end, and where Cara's begin and end, open up a hex editor, copy all of Galuf's sprites' bytes, and then paste/overwrite them into Cara's (ctrl + W if you use XVI32). You'd still have to deal with palette issues, but it'd go faster than click and dragging.

How do you get the black materia?
... In any case, PLEASE, it's been spoiled enough, nobody tell him where or when that happens. Please. Especially, especially, especially because the scene is so unforgettable. And Glomaldrig, keep the following in mind: In Final Fantasy games, characters who are conclusively known to have died STAY dead. Sorry. (Interestingly, no one has ever tried to revive those two "monster royalty" or the "spoony" sage...maybe it's because they aren't awesome enough.) -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing.
