Possible spoilers: highlight to view
In Thamasa, after the Espers rush out to fight Kefka, he says something to the effect of "Now I'll neutralize your powers." The screen flashes, his Magitek Guardians disappear, and then he starts fighting.

What happened there? I thought it was some spell that protected him from their attacks, but why would that kill off his own allies? Any guesses?

It was a magic destroying/absorbing attack?

I never even noticed that. Maybe he felt that he didn't need his guards anymore. Who knows, this IS Kefka we're talking about. He doesn't seem to care who he kills.

Kefka killed off his own allies when he poisoned doma.
there were pow's within doma castle.

Kefka is insane.

he only cares about becoming more powerful, an archetypal FF villain

If Kefka possesses a spell that neutralized Esper power and/or magic in general, it's bound to affect MagiTek as well; after all, it's power is extracted from Espers. Why it weakens Espers and destroys/removes MagiTek armor and it's pilots is anybody's guess, or more accurately: a plot device.

Right - I don't question whether Kefka would be willing to sacrifice his friends for a spell, just what he does that causes it. Maybe he taps the magic powers in the Machines to cast his spell?

LOL Kefka with allies. biggrin.gif

I agree, Kefka just doesn't really care about those guys, especially with Espers within his reach.

Maybe they realize that they've been following an insane clown and utilize their l33t powers of teleportation. =D

Simply put: Kefka's crazy

Kefka's attack was a HUGE spell that simply wiped out his men along with the espers, so this way he could obtain the remaining magicite from the dead espers.

The men dissappearing didnt bug me as much as did why the magicite were attracted to Kefka. The magicite are attracted to the team in Vector from the tubes because they wanted to assist him, but why would they go to Kefka?

Telekenisis?
He used his magic mind powers to move them towards him.

(Is that better?)

If it will make it more clear, Kefka is as evil as Climhazzard, and that's pretty bad. Yeah, Kefka kills people and almost destroys the whole world, but Climmy can blow up houses. Climmy's really good at what he does, he's an expert while Kefka was just trying it out.

Kefka is just evil, and Kefka is just being Kefka! Oh, yes he kills the Magitek men because they no longer served him any purpose. Why would he want just plain, ordinary men with him if he could have control of all the magic the Espers have to offer?

I always assumed he absorbed them, and used the machine's power to cast the spells he did right after.
The soldiers just got caught in the spell. Oh well.

In all honesty i've always thought the reason he had those guys with him was to use the power of the armor as a weapon to capture the espers with. I mean the only reason they were maned was to get them there and so that he could have them try to trash the town while he was there. When he was using the spell to nutralize there powers he probably took the energy from the machines themselves, thus destroying them and the men inside them in the process. However from the sounds of the empire, those guys probably knew what they were getting into long before it happened. You also have to look at the fact that those suites weren't the normal ones either, to those who have ever fought one with leo you know what i am talking about. Ask powerful as those things are there energy must of been so great that that was all kefka could think of to throw at the espers. Just my theory though.

Wait, Kefka has allies or guardians?

Given his personality, I'm pretty sure he couldn't care less about killing them.
