As some of you may know, this wonderful wonderful game was released on November 7.. Right now I'm stuck on Expert on the last song (Free Bird). The solo is insane; easily far more difficult than anything on the first game... though there are a few songs on this that give it a run for its money. Jordan, a bonus song, for instance, is the hardest song by far in either of the games. Anyways, I just thought I'd post the song list and see if anyone else is busy playing.

1. Opening Licks

* "Shout at the Devil" - Mötley Crüe
* "Mother" - Danzig
* "Surrender" - Cheap Trick
* "Woman" - Wolfmother
* "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight" - Spınal Tap (Encore)

2. Amp-Warmers

* "Strutter" - KISS
* "Heart-Shaped Box" - Nirvana
* "Message in a Bottle" - The Police
* "You Really Got Me" - Van Halen
* "Carry On Wayward Son" - Kansas (Encore)

3. String-Snappers

* "Monkey Wrench" - Foo Fighters
* "Them Bones" - Alice in Chains
* "Search and Destroy" - Iggy Pop and The Stooges
* "Tattooed Love Boys" - The Pretenders
* "War Pigs" - Black Sabbath (Encore)

4. Thrash and Burn

* "Cherry Pie" - Warrant
* "Who Was in My Room Last Night?" - Butthole Surfers
* "Girlfriend" - Matthew Sweet
* "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" - The Rolling Stones
* "Sweet Child O' Mine" - Guns N' Roses (Encore)

5. Return of the Shred

* "Killing in the Name" - Rage Against the Machine
* "John the Fisherman" - Primus
* "Freya" - The Sword
* "Bad Reputation" - Thin Lizzy
* "Last Child" - Aerosmith (Encore)

6. Relentless Riffs

* "Crazy on You" - Heart
* "Trippin' On a Hole in a Paper Heart" - Stone Temple Pilots
* "Rock This Town" - Stray Cats
* "Jessica" - The Allman Brothers Band
* "Stop!" - Jane's Addiction (Encore)

7. Furious Fretwork

* "Madhouse" - Anthrax
* "Carry Me Home" - The Living End
* "Laid to Rest" - Lamb of God
* "Psychobilly Freakout" - The Reverend Horton Heat
* "YYZ" - Rush (Encore)

8. Face-Melters

* "Hangar 18" - Megadeth
* "Free Bird" - Lynyrd Skynyrd (Encore)

AIYE! I want to get this so bad, but I just bought FFXII and I had a huge gaming backup when I splurged and bought stuff in the summer. I have the first game and it's still awesome to play (Texas Flood heart.gif), and I would love to play Skynyrd and Allman Brothers.

One more thing I'm also happy to see is that Count Zero and Honest Bob made the next installment's cut; they had some of the better bonus tracks on the first. But why oh why god would you bring Made in Mexico back? It's pretty much known that Farewell Myth is the worst song on the game. tongue.gif

Enjoy it in my place!

I really like Guitar Hero, and I've cleared songs on Hard and Expert before on friends' files, but I don't have either game. I think I'll probably get the first one in a month or so after the hoilday insanity dies down, and then move on to the second one. I played it all the time at the UVA gamers club, but I've probably gotten a bit rusty.....

And yes, Jessica + Killing in the Name + Crazy on You + YYZ + Trogdor = delicious

fantastic game, although playing the freebird solo for real is easier than playing on guitar hero biggrin.gif haha

I hope the next game has some real shred though, like

Building The Church by Steve Vai
Serrana by Jason becker or
The Duel by Rusty cooley

Okay, scratch that about being stuck on Free Bird. Finally passed it and unlocked a brand spankin' new guitar! ...and a new multiplayer mode, but you get that for beating the game on any difficulty. Expert just happened to be my first. smile.gif

**Mandatory Disclaimer** -- The following screenshot has a band name that is probably offensive to some people.

Screenshot!

Oh, and I've found most of the bonus tracks were very well done this time around. Minus, of course, the Made in Mexico song. It's even worse than the first one. No lie.

I've beat everything on the first game except for Cowboys from Hell; the riff eludes me somehow and I screw up. Got 60% but never much more. Might have to get this after I'm finished with XII.

How's that Freezepop song? I thoroughly enjoyed "Let's Get Ready to Rokk" and am wondering if it's similar.

Turns out being left handed has ended up restricting the way I can play, so I have yet to beat the original on hard.

Checking out what I've done to beat this on medium, I doubt I'll get more than halfway on hard. But man, is it worth it. Especially the co-op. That shit's da bomb yo! I wouldn't recommend attempting Freebird more than once a night at the most. I'm still in pain...

If it hurts you just to play it, my hand's going to break off. I never got the hang of shifting my fingers, so I don't move my (left) button hand at all. This basically means that I use my thumb to play the green button and the pinky to play the orange. I've done pretty well by it, but I'm no virtuoso -- Freebird would be worth the pain!

If anyone's interested in the song that repeatedly makes me want to end it all, here' s a link to it done on Expert by a computer:

Youtube video!

It's actually Jordan, by Buckethead, even though the guy seems to pick YYZ.

With star power abuse, I can only get to about the 3:10 mark on the video. sad.gif

Narratorway: Have you put on "lefty flip" in the options menu? Supposedly that makes it much easier for lefties to play.

That's cause it's a hack, hence the computer playing the song.

Anyway, I know about lefty flip, though it took me a while to find it in GHII (what the hell's it doing under 'video settings'? blink.gif). The problem is I can't play it sitting down. Couldn't with the first one, can't here. That means that since the guitars aren't setup for left side straps, I gotta hold it as I'm playing, so I've gotta strum with just my thumb, which makes its pretty much impossible to attempt up and down strums. Really limits the speed at which I can play.

Bumping this up because I've been playing it endlessly for the last few weeks, having finally bought it. I simply can't stop. I only have Jordan left to pass on expert, but since that won't be happening for awhile, I've been amusing myself with http://www.scorehero.com/ in an attempt to better my own statistics.

Jordan hard? Come on... tongue.gif

I love this game. I used to be a DWI god (quite literally - there are some things fingers are not meant to do, and I've done those things. I'll never be the same again.) Then someone brought this over to a company party and everyone loved it. I picked it up about two weeks later.

I'd love to see some really good groups in the next one. More Van Hallen (Humans Being!!), some Iron Maiden, more Danzig (always more Danzig - though I'm thrilled they had Mother in II), maybe even something german like Rammstein or Megaherz though the genre is a bit too little "rock" to fit in. Then again, II had the death metal song "Six" (tons of fun on expert without looking at the screen - I lasted until the bridge part if anyone wants to take a stab at this. tongue.gif)

Although while Jordan may be bearable and Freebird not too hard once you figure out the trick to it (slide, don't press individual buttons - and do hammer ons and pull offs!), nobody has nominated Made in Mexico's "Yes we can" as a hard song. I'd like to do that. I've yet to get more than 4 starts on it. There is NO way a song this horribly boring can hold ANYONE'S attention more than a minute. If you can keep concentrating on the song past a minute, you're inhuman and need to turn yourself in at your nearest military base so they may experiment on you and find the cure to all of mankind's problems. I mean, who's idea was it to put a song that's "twang twang twang twang tink tink twang" non-stop in this game's lineup?

WHO?

(Spoiler - Freebird, Six, Mother, Jordan, Freya, and Yes We Can are all orphans but they lost their memories after using their guitars. Or something. It all makes sense!! biggrin.gif)

I'd gotten pretty dang far, getting up to the second-to-last tier on Expert...and then my save corrupted. Haven't played since, which isn't such a bad thing considering how I play the guitar. I can use my thumb to play the green button and the other fingers to play the rest, so I never have to slide around. Gives me a blister between thumb/pointer, but I don't mind. =p

Far as Jordan's concerned, I got pretty dang far on it until the last third of the song. I'm not good at doing scales, so I always mess up. Playing Thunderhorse is where it's at anyway. tongue.gif

I used to have a hard time with scales until I ended up figuring out how the game really handles hammer ons and pull offs.

While playing Six, I realized I could just strum once then hit notes even if they were changing scales. Without strumming again. This happens only in some places and you can keep hitting notes until you...

a- Miss one
b- Exit some special section

Some testing revealed that, yep, there are "sections" here and there where you only need to strum once then it's all fingerwork. Various notes that SHOULD've been pull offs / hammer ons in the Van Hallen song simply didn't register, so I figured the tracks have a simple format.

How timing is handled, I can only guess at. It's not important. The thing is, each note is represented by a code. Other codes indicate the start of something special and the end of it. Special sections are as follows.

1- Star notes
2- Held down notes
3- "Chainable" notes.

That 3rd type is what we're interested in. If you can learn which sections start and end by this, you can easily get through a song with minimal fretting and by concentrating on your other hand. Scales are really easy to pull off because you just fret once on the first note, then slide your fingers. Even fast bursts of single notes are easy if you don't have to strum while hitting them.

What really gets me is when the game alternates between a single note and a chord really fast repeatedly (ie, red/yellow, red, red/yellow, red, red/yellow, red...)

In case you haven't realized it yet, you can see what notes you can Hammer-On / Pull-Off visually.

Picture!

See the notes with the black "circle" in them? You have to strum those. The notes that have no black circle, you can HO/PO.

In the case of this example, there's only one note that you'd have to strum, and that's the... 3rd or 2nd, depending on how you look at it.

...Damn. That was a rather good guess on my part, wasn't it? wink.gif

Thanks for pointing out those circles - I never noticed them. Suddently it makes some of the tougher songs so much easier, now that I know this... I don't recall the tutorials ever pointing it out, which annoys me somewhat. :x

Hehehe... Freebird, expert, here I come. biggrin.gif

So.... I'm guessing you never did the tutorials? I though they toldl you straight up. Maybe in the first game? It's not a matter of knowing when to do them so much as never being able to do them as hard as I try.

If you're having trouble with HO/PO's in this game, then I'd suggest never even attempting them on the first game. They're much much harder to time correctly.

I did the tutorials, like I mentionned near the end of my post, but I don't remember them pointing out there were any markings to tell these kinds of notes apart from the rest. wink.gif

As a matter of fact, I felt the tutorials were terribly bare-bones and more of a "things you can do" list than an actual tutorial...

Once you start doing them though, they're easy to pull off. No pun intended.

I managed to clear Normal and Hard without even having a clue on how to pull off hammer-ons and pull-offs, but somewhere in the middle tiers of Expert mode I realized that I had to buckle down and figure them out.

I just unlocked the final tier of songs on Expert. I'm currently playing other games at the moment, and most of my Guitar Hero-playing crowd is no longer around to play (different universities), so I'll probably put that on hold for awhile. Don't got no worries, 'cause I ain't in no hurries, right?

I was always discouraged to get into this series because I actually have been playing guitar for a long time, and getting used to the way this game-guitar was set up really bothered me. I'd relapse back into actual guitar mode and try playing strings or notes that weren't there.

Now I've finally picked this game up and getting used to the way it works. I'm currently on the third tier on expert mode and haven't had any real difficulty playing anything so far, apart from controlling my urge to follow the song by sound and start relapsing back into actual guitar mode.

All in all, it's a lot of fun.

My little brother has this game, and I played it when I visited my family a few days ago.

The challenge level seemed pretty nice... But I really hate the music. I mean, it's almost completely hard rock! That's not all there is to guitar music!

I'm just glad I don't live with someone who plays it all the time. I'd have a constant migraine.

I don't even own the first one yet. But, I've been playing it at my friend's house and despite sucking at it, I love these games.

I really want to get it and I'd heard that there was a pearl jam song on the second, can this be confirmed or denied?

The first game has WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better songs.

There's only three really good reasons to buy GH2:

1) Freebird
2) Trogdor
3) Training Mode

Everything else is just mediocre.

They probably had enough memory left on GH1 to add those three things, if so, the sequel wouldn't have even been necessary, just update the original.

Both games still rock, but $80 for a game and a guitar? My friends have the game, and I can beat them at it already.

I'll stick to Amplitude thankyou.

The first game has WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better songs.

There's only three really good reasons to buy GH2:

1) Freebird
2) Trogdor
3) Training Mode

Everything else is just mediocre.

YYZ would like to have a word with you. You know, YY "the best song in the frickin' game" Z. I like both games' selection for different reasons, and I can live with that. Also, don't forget GH2's *much* improved multiplayer and improved visual interfaces.

I completely disagree. I much prefer the song list from the second game. Great songs to play on Expert include:

Woman
Monkey Wrench
Tattooed Love Boys
Can't You Hear Me Knocking?
Sweet Child O' Mine
Killing in the Name
Bad Reputation
Crazy On You
Trippin' On A Hole In A Paper Heart
Rock This Town
Jessica
Stop!
Madhouse
Carry Me Home
Laid to Rest
YYZ
Beast and the Harlot
Misirlou
Hangar 18
Free Bird
Arterial Black
Raw Dog
Elephant Bones
Gemini
Jordan
Less Talk More Rokk
The Light That Blinds
Push Push (Lady Lightning)
Radium Eyes
Six
Soy Bomb
Thunderhorse
Trogdor

I would rank these songs as far more fun to play and (for the most part) more challenging than any songs on the first game. Cowboys From Hell and, I guess, the solo in Bark at the Moon are the only two even comparable in terms of difficulty, and really, it wouldn't be that bad if you could HO/PO like in the second game.

And, frankly, the much improved gameplay factors in in a huge way to a purchase of GH2. The overall note timings were greatly improved, and HO/PO's are actually possible without practicing individual songs thousands of times.

Seriously, the improvement to HO/PO's warrants a purchase in itself.

And who can ignore the far better multiplayer?
