I got Thunderbird a few years ago and it seemed better than anything I had ever seen, but it's been giving me significant problems recently, such as
- hanging on the connection (connection with server times out anytime my e-mail has an attachment), and then hanging on other things thereafter until restarted - occasional crashing for no apparent reason - taking up a LOT of memory - occasionally freezing up my computer when it does the "new mail" corner-pop-up thingy and plays the chime Additionally, I've had some beef with some "features" for a while: - it formats quoted messages strangely (it's not quite as simple as adding "> " to the beginning of quoted lines, and has additional hidden line breaks and/or style changes or something) - I can't get it to display quoted messages using the "> " notation--it HAS to use no formatting change, or at most a color change and a bar on the left hand side to show that a message is quoted - it puts e-mail addresses in separate lines, making me have to copy them one by one if I want to send a new e-mail thread to people - it doesn't automatically copy my own address when I hit reply-all (this is a personal taste issue, I know) - it puts brackets around the subject line every time I forward an e-mail And probably, most importantly, it handles outgoing attachments in strange ways, such that my school's e-mail service is now rejecting them as executables even though they aren't. Can anyone recommend a good e-mail client for Windows XP that is not Thunderbird, Outlook, or Outlook Express? Or, alternatively, can anyone tell me how to solve most of the problems I listed above? -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. Well, if you don't mind using an online service, Hotmail is what I've used for ages, and I have no problems with it at all. Gmail is pretty popular as well, but I can't have an opinion on it. Plus, I don't think that the school system can interfere with it at all.
Edit Ah, well I can't help you there. This post has been edited by Sinslayer on 23rd January 2007 16:14 -------------------- |

I use Hotmail as well; only problem I've had was it went down for an hour or so when I was waiting for a uni email
![]() My friend has the Google one (is that Gmail?) which has an unlimited inbox size according to him. He likes to tell me it's better than Hotmail whenever the conversation arises. -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. Yes, it is Google's email service. 2. No, it does not have unlimited inbox size. However, both services honestly have enough space for every email you'll ever recieve, unless you like hoarding your old emails. -------------------- |

Neither Hotmail nor GMail are clients. They are standalone providers of email services. GMH needs something with which to send email that is not web-based, and neither of those two options will do anything for him.
Some of the problems you are having with Thunderbird can be fixed, though I do not know the remedies off hand. I know there is a way to do a more traditional style forward of email, though I do not know about your attachment issues. The crashing issues impress me - I have only been using TB for about nine months now, but I have not had any issues like what you describe, and I run TB on an eight year old P3-450. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

Why not use one through Netscape.com? I use that one, only thing is is that it's, like, integrated through AOL.com, so it can get kinda choppy as far as loading times go... It's through there website, so it's not really an application for your computer or anything

Sinslayer, sweetdude, and RoughknightVII:
Quote (Rangers51) Neither Hotmail nor GMail are clients. They are standalone providers of email services. Hotmail, GMail, AOL, Netscape, etc. are e-mail services, and I don't need a new one. I have GMail accounts as well as an e-mail account at my school. What I need is a new program for reading/writing/sending/etc. my e-mail. Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Outlook Express, and Mozilla Thunderbird are examples of those. In particular, I'm looking for one that's not browser-based. Most companies offer webmail service (i.e. browser-based e-mail checking/sending), but they generally don't have as convenient and/or efficient an interface as e-mail processing programs (i.e. a "client") that I could download onto my computer. I mainly want an e-mail client that doesn't try to do too much for me other than the technical aspects. In other words, one that's preferably simple (as to formatting and other non-technical aspects), but does what it needs to do very well and efficiently. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing.
