Quote (Barrylocke @ 26th November 2006 15:03) You know lasz, zeromus_x, I've already found an active site that has the manga. www.oblivion-ro.com . I just need to decide what I want to read first. Oh, shazbot. Now I might have to start reading that one, too. I've started reading some Death Note in the meantime, and I like it quite a bit, although it's not the orgasmically good manga series I was led to believe it was. Well, I'm still of the opinion that One Piece is the greatest manga of all time. Even more so now that Naruto has gotten a little boring. -------------------- |

Quote One Piece is the greatest manga of all time. Speaking of One Piece, I recently was advised to check out the anime from a good friend, and I must say. I like it. I'm questioning whether or not I should start reading the manga. I've heard good things about death note, so sometime in the future I may check it out. -------------------- "Have you ever seen a baby do that before?" |

Barrylocke, that address isn't working for me.
![]() The last time I read One Piece was...a very long time ago, really. From what I remember, it was very entertaining (and very remniscent of the early episodes of Dragon Ball, with playful humor, strange powers and generally decent storylines). However, knowing how long it is, I don't know if I'll ever try and read the entire thing (reading up on Death Note was kinda a chore, I don't know how I'll go through over 300 or so chapters of One Piece ![]() Not much anime or manga as of recently though. Once I figure out how to get my computer to load videos from YouTube without exploding, I'll probably find some Death Note episodes. -------------------- |

However, knowing how long it is, I don't know if I'll ever try and read the entire thing (reading up on Death Note was kinda a chore, I don't know how I'll go through over 300 or so chapters of One Piece ![]() That's a pretty decent summation of the entire manga. Eichiro Oda, who writes One Piece, practically worships Akira Toriyama and One Piece is heavily influenced by early Dragon Ball in general (back when DB was fantasy and not sci-fi). The characters are wacky and fun, the storylines and action are solid, and the world that Oda created is both wonderful and bizarre. It's also absolutely hilarious at times, mostly thanks to the wacky characters. Hell, the only main characters that can at all be considered non-wacky are some of the villains (Crocodile and parts of CP9 come to mind), some of the more important side characters (Shanks and Smoker come to mind), and Nico Robin. It's also true that it's hella long, with 437 chapters and counting. But whatever BS A11smart says about unsold issues of OP is basically bung. One Piece is the most popular manga in Japan right now. It's SJ's third-highest grossing manga of all time, behind Kochi Kame and Dragon Ball, and one of its earlier volumes (I forget which one it was, but it was at the beginning of the Jaya arc) was the best selling Japanese novel of all time, prior to the publication of the Japanese version of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. In the US its popularity is significantly behind its contemporaries Naruto and Inuyasha, and the butchered English dub of the OP anime doesn't help its popularity over here, either. If any of you people are interested in tackling the epic masterpiece, then the best places to start would be kaizoku-fansubs for the anime and the One Piece Manga MSN group for the manga. Either way there's a lot of stuff to slog through, but it's worth it, as it's my favorite manga of all time. Cowboy Bebop is still my favorite anime of all time, but with the manga nothing else comes close. This post has been edited by laszlow on 10th December 2006 13:29 -------------------- |

Oh man, I completely forgot about there being a Disgaea anime until awhile ago, and I was given a link to episodes on YouTube. It's hilarious, and it's great for people like me who haven't had a chance to play the first game to see how everything starts (although, I've heard there are some plot changes, so it may not be a straight-out copy of the game's story).

Quote big distinctionback when DB was fantasy and not sci-fi) although the manga for dragonball was very entertaining, Z and GT blew chunks up the wall. One piece does have a certain flair to it that is nostalgic from dragonball, but it is also unique in its own sense. Characters actually stay developed, unlike naruto who seems to constantly progress as a character and then regress shortly afterwards. The anime for one piece flows rather well. keeping pretty good time for fights and dialogue. -------------------- "Have you ever seen a baby do that before?" |

More Threadcromany.
Beyond watching the orignal Dragon Ball series, Samurai Pizza Cats and Sailor Moon when I was a wee lad, I was never really anime crazy. I got into Visions of Escaflowne and Gundam Wing when they aired on YTV here in Canada, but I still hardly understood "anime" from regular cartoons, apart that I liked the animation and plots a lot better in these. Recently though, I've had unnatural amounts of free time, so I started reading Hellsing. Then I watched the Gonzo produced mini series and realized that it was god-awful in respect to the manga, had hardly anything at all to do with the story of Hellsing and basically sent me into a berserker rage until I realized that another production crew has taken the rights for Hellsing and is re-doing the series in OVA format, true to the manga. I've seen the first two episodes and they blew my mind. I jumped on the Naruto band-wagon a few years too late, it's cute and I see the appeal of it, it's certainly a fun series, but I'm not absolutely in love with it the way I see some people go nuts. Lately I just started watching Death Note, which isn't half bad, though it's kind of losing momentum. Trinity Blood, another vampire story from Gonzo (Hellsing anime) has been airing on CN for a while, and the edited version is pretty terrible, however the fansubbed version I downloaded is a huge improvement. Someone told me to check out a series called Gungrave, I've yet to do so yet but I've heard quite a bit of good things. Anyone have any thoughts on the series? -------------------- Okay, but there was a goat! |

I just watched the 14 episodes of death note, and I can only say I'm hooked and lured like a salmon chasing after fritos doused in WD40.
Death Note is addicting, which is odd because it's completely mind-based, not action oriented at all like my other favorite animes. I must say I might end up liking Death Note more than Bebop. -------------------- "Have you ever seen a baby do that before?" |

I don't really have much choice on what anime I can watch, considering I'm stuck on dial-up and YouTube doesn't load more than five minutes of anything, and the only channel that has anime on it is YTV on Friday nights. I guess I'm not that big on anime anyway, but I have recently began watching Fullmetal Alchemist. The show is pretty cool, but I prefer the manga, which I have the first two books of. It's probably my favourite of the moment. I also got the first Naruto book for Christmas and I found it hilarious!

I watched all 25 episodes of Final Fantasy: Unlimited and it rocks. :3 The first couple of episodes kind of had me going, "Huh?", but after that, the show really picks up and it just continues to get awesomer and awesomer until the tear jerker of an ending. I reeeaaallly wished it hadn't been discontinued because I know how the rest of the story goes and I want to SEE it~ >.<

Gungrave is unbelievably fantastic, almost telling the could-be story of Vicious and
Spike (of the CowboyBebop series, from which many Gungrave committee members collaborated), in a very jarring and visceral storyline. Truly enjoyable. If you can swing it, do so. It's a freaking marvelous criminal/vengeance epic. Thanks, CloudStrife510 and CelesOfBlades for the DeathNote tip, especially having it in the same breath as Bebop means I'll be looking into it. Those are correlated values that increase the entire set, as presented. -------------------- Putting the A's in W lm rt: A11smart, Jobclass: Retailer. |

The first two subbed episodes of Naruto: Shippuden dropped early this morning. For some reason, it starts off with a scene from the Grass Country Arc (which is something like a hundred manga chapters from the beginning of Naruto II) before going into the intro scene. Whatever. The animation's hotness, and I might have to start watching this thing again regularly.

geez it's going to be hard getting back inot naruto.
i haven't watched it in a while I might just skip ahead to Naruto II, unless there's an awsome arc I might miss out on. Last I was watching, Hokage-sama was having hinata, naruto, and others running around doing endless chores, and that got boring. -------------------- "Have you ever seen a baby do that before?" |

I watched the first two Naruto: Shipuuden episodes out of curiosity, and I must say that I was pretty disappointed.
Well, to be honest, I didn't have high hopes anyway, so disappointed isn't the right word. Even though it has the manga to base on again it decides to stray off here and there for seemingly no reason at all. Compared to the way Kishimoto originally wrote it, the timing is annoying, the dialogue is ho-hum, and the animation is terribly unremarkable. Don't get me wrong, this guy has his flaws too (i.e. development of boring characters, extension of uninteresting battles, and the occasional super-power plot hole), but I thought at least this new arc was introduced well. The translation to television really dropped the ball. Now I remember why I never watch this anime (much less any anime). And now I sound like some pretentious loser on top of the fact that I'm ashamed to have posted in this thread in the first place. ![]() -------------------- I find your lack of faith disturbing... |

Well, I'm not a huge anime fan, but I do like watching it when I have a spare Saturday. I watch all of it on YouTube, and always subbed. If the disgusting train wreck that was Pokemon is anything to go by, then it pays to be wary of dubs.
Full Metal Alchemist - I've got up to about Episode 35, iirc. A masterpiece, and it honestly defeats nearly anything on TV at the moment. And yes, I swear that there is a space in between "Full" and "Metal". Naruto - Pretty good, from what I've seen, what little I have watched. Sasuke is the best character, IMO. Inuyasha - I watched episode 1, then forgot about it. Might look around for the second episode, y'know. The annoying thing about using Youtube/Google Video is that it takes forever to load long enough so that the video doesn't jar or stop. Download is not an option, though. -------------------- |

I find naruto to be overrated, dialogue add ins, broken tempo for fights, and characters don't keep personality development, and are pron to reverting back to how they've always been. but when it comes to anime like Death Note, that's just ridiculously addicting. and it's not action based at all, it's all strategy. Bebop is definitely a cut above the rest. the fights are wonderfully choreographed and the plot is exceptional. One piece anime is still good, but I like the manga better. My point being KtI is that it all depends on the anime, just as with any other show on T.V. Some a good, some are bad. Some people like them, some don't. I haven't seen the movie yet so I haven't seen how it "really" ends, but having read about it I'm sure it wraps up nicely. FMA starts out a lil silly and light-hearted, but by the end one of the best I've seen. Also, I don't think the manga has ended yet so there shouldn't be anything to spoil, though I've heard it does start to differ a lot from the anime. I'll echo what people have said about Death Note and throw my vote in there too. It's definitely intriguing, and not a typical "action" manga at all. I would liken it to a strategy thriller, like watching a game of chess. I'm gonna check out the anime soon enough. I've also been told from the person that recommended Death Note that I should check out "Monster." I don't think I've seen anyone mention that, but I've heard really good things so I thought I'd pass along the recommendation to ya'll. |

The best and worst criticism of LodossWar: 'Hey, didn't we campaign this battle?' It
at times felt just like DnD, but the personal journey of Parn and the villian, Ashram. Oh! Wikipedia thinks it's because it was directly influenced by DnD, in that a creator was also a DM! Neat. The suspicion was always there; it's nice to see Wiki weigh in. After watching it, it was hard not to refer to everything as 'the acCURS-ed' this and 'the acCURS-ed' that. We should go to the ac-CURS-ed store; toss me an acCURS-ed mint, I'd help you move but I cannot betray the boundaries of my acCURS-ed home. -------------------- Putting the A's in W lm rt: A11smart, Jobclass: Retailer. |

I finally found recent manga scanlations of Tenjho Tenge, so I read the entire thing yesterday and today. The Tenjho Tenge anime (which I saw a year ago) quit after one season, so I was familliar the series for the first 35/103 chapters, but nothing beyond there. It's a fun series with entertaining characters and storyline, some really cool combat, and quite a bit of sex and ecchi for a manga that's serialized in Jump. That Ogure Itto likes the female form. Alot.
My only gripe with the manga is the flashbacks. Serioiusly, the whole thing is just about 25% flashbacks, in two seperate arcs. I mean, we get such a neat group of core characters, and then we don't see them for a dozen chapters? Lame. This post has been edited by laszlow on 2nd April 2007 23:28 -------------------- |
