I wanted to see who would actually have the knowledge to comment about, and respect the Great, great, great, great Grandfather of all the RPGs that are awesome.
And for those of you FFers: Understand that Enix made Dragon Warrior, so technically, DW is still your Step-Great, great, great, great Grandfather. So show props. I thought that it would be interesting to hear what people had to say about how they reacted to the gameplay of one of the originals. So if you remeber whose Token, Armor, and Sword it is that you pair that silver shield with, tell us all about it. -------------------- If internal struggles were as enjoyable and glamorous as the self conflicted wars within video game characters, we would all be statues, reveling in perpetual self war. -Me Play me on Rock Band 2, GH-WT, or any other Xbox GH! I played Dragon Warrior (I call it by the original name Dragon Quest) a couple years back. I can't say that I care for the original version, but the SNES version was kinda fun (I had a translated patch of the ROM) I found the original tedious for me, having been weaned on SNES and PS games. It is an important game though, that's for sure.

I think this should belong in the Squeenix Gaming forum. Dragon Quest is also a shared material to Square. The only ones I have played were 3 and 5.
I still have the jap cartridge of Dragon Quest V next to my SNES games, as it was my first RPG and I couldn't even understand japanese, but even if I could go far, my cart was glitched into auto erasing my saves every three minutes I turn the SNES off. Those are good games. I heard DQ4 was also splendid. The only thing I don't like about the series is the menu system. |

This is one of those nostalgic games that I look back on fondly but don't really think much of. Yes, it was fun beating up on slimes with a bamboo stick. No, I would never ever play through that game again.
I remember knowing exactly where I needed to go to pick up Erdrick's armor, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have completed the game if I had had to walk around 'searching' squares. -------------------- "That Light has bestowed upon me the greatest black magic!" |

My first RPG.
My character's name was always LANCELOT. Wraith Knights and Metal Slimes still rank right on up there with hardest random encounters ever. That game had some pretty interesting quirks. Gwaelin wouldn't let you say "No, I don't love you." Did anyone ever try to go through the game without rescuing Gwaelin? I tried one time, but my good ol' NES erased my data. Erdrick's armor still owns 90% of the equipment out there. I'm still mad at whoever put "Here Lies Erdrick" on a gravestone in FF1. -------------------- You don't scare me, you talking blobs of oozing slop! I am impervious to pain! |

Quote (The Ancient @ 15th January 2007 08:33) I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have completed the game if I had had to walk around 'searching' squares. Ahh, the days of commanding everything independently! That was before they decided it would just be easier to run everything off the A button. The search command was great. It had only 3 purposes in the entire game: 1. Picking up Erdrick's Armor 2. Picking up Erdrick's Token 3. Saying "Thou has found a treasure chest!" if you searched whilst standing on a treasure chest. (It didn't even open it, it just told you it was there, as if the fact that you were walking up to it wasn't enough.) -------------------- If internal struggles were as enjoyable and glamorous as the self conflicted wars within video game characters, we would all be statues, reveling in perpetual self war. -Me Play me on Rock Band 2, GH-WT, or any other Xbox GH! Quote (Tombstone in Arias Village @ Star Ocean 3) "The hero Loto lies here, too." Quote (Tombstone in Melmond @ Final Fantasy) "Here lies Erdrick" Anyway, although frustrating, DQ is still a pretty nice and nostalgic game. I probably won't play through it again anytime soon, though. I think I must've went insane trying to find one of those pieces of the hero's equipment (it was either a crest, a sword, or a piece of armor, hidden in a remote swamp...). DQII is still far more frustrating, though. -------------------- |

Z_X, that was Erdrick's Token, IIRC. You used "Gwaelin's Love" as your compass (*gag*), and she would always end your coordinates with "I love thee, Your Name Here." I think if you took Erdrick's Token to that old man, he would give you the Rainbow Drop?

Quote (Asylum Outpatient @ 21st January 2007 09:44) I think if you took Erdrick's Token to that old man, he would give you the Rainbow Drop? You have to have the Stones of Sunlight and the Staff of Rain also, because "Where the sun and rain meet, a rainbow shall appear." But yes, the token is the last step to prove that you are in Erdrick's lineage. Which is a really strange way to prove it, because anyone could have found that, had they wanted to go hiking into the middle of a poisonous marsh, I mean... that's kid stuff. That, and that old man knew where it was, which would make you think that HE is in the lineage somehow. But if that is the case, why on earth didn't he mention that the two of you were related? -------------------- If internal struggles were as enjoyable and glamorous as the self conflicted wars within video game characters, we would all be statues, reveling in perpetual self war. -Me Play me on Rock Band 2, GH-WT, or any other Xbox GH!
