I read on a very reliable source today that Squaresoft are to make a "surprise announcement" later this year to coincide with the 20th anniversary of final fantasy.

It could be anyones guess what this is,
but i'll bet it is a remake of somesort (vi or vii maybe happy.gif )

maybe it is that they will stop making FF games anymore blink.gif (hope not)

anyway whats your guesses? shifty.gif

If it's true, it's probably some other FF , probably 8 knowing our luck, reciving sequels and cashins 120% worse than the original. And if it is 8, god help us all, that will be bad. Facing that sort of prospect a remake or a nuclear war would be a relief.

However, I doubt it's true until I see the source. And it's not really a surprise any more if it is true.

Well it is the 10th anniversary of FFVII coming up (in Europe anyway, I'm not sure about NTSC areas) so another presequel could be on the way. Maybe Zackse, SOLDIA Classe Firsto will make another appearance.

They should make a game called The Final Fantasy. And they should make it good. And then end the series there in style. Never going to happen though. Last time I checked, we still use money to buy things.

How about that source, then, if it's so reliable? I don't believe that Square actually have the power to surprise any more, to be honest. But, if there is to be an announcement around the 20th anniversary, you can expect it to be very late in the year, which makes it seem even more sad to me that they feel they have to drum up enthusiasm for it eleven months early.

Maybe some kind of FF game that has the Final Fantasy characters from every FF game? A bit like Kingdom Hearts but with no Disney characters and also making sure the FF characters are like they were in the original games.

It could be good if it's as fun as Kingdom Hearts. But I don't see much point in speculating when all they can say is, "There will be announcement..."

Can we have a source?

I read it on GameCentral, it is on UK teletext and is run by journos who actually really know their games.

they have a forum too though i never use it

http://teletextgames.proboards3.com/

to quote:

"New Final Fantasy announcement by the end of 2007!
Square will apparently be revealing a surprise Final Fantasy-related announced by the year's end.

The announcement will be to celebrate the franchise's 20th anniversary. In the last two decades, Final Fantasy has become the third-highest selling game franchise ever, selling 68 million copies worldwide. As to what the announcement will be, there is no hint given - we only know it will be big.

Final Fantasy's 20th anniversary is on December 18th, 2007. It is unknown when this large announcement will be made.

Sorry to be a tad mean, but the part he missed from Page 306 4/5 on Channel 4 teletext, for clarity:

"Before we continue with this story, we want to point out this sort of thing always tends to be a dissapointment (or a mistranslation)"

Which means even they have taken it with a grain of salt. Shame you can't say much in a crappy three-paragraph (In fact, that one sentence took up about three lines) Independent Television Teletext page festooned with pointless adverts for horoscopes or pages irrelevant to the one you're reading. Even if you had something to say.

I agree with R51 if Square still had the power to surprise (not likely) then it would be really sad to hype up a surprise 11 months in advance. If there is a surprise then I would guess that there is a remake on the way. That would be really cool if they did do a game with all the old characters (fatman). I could see that being a lot of fun and having ample opportunity for a great storyline.

Most likely if history serves us right, then it will be a remake of Final Fantasy 7 for the PS3, and a Final Fantasy 7 part 2 shortly afterwards, not a surprise really.

But you know what would be a surprise, that Chrono Trigger remake, altought obviously this is not Final Fantasy related.

But most likely, a remake of a Final Fantasy, I hope they re make 6, worthy game that deserves a remake.

Mother of God, I hope it's not a FF7 remake. I think they've milked that horrible game and its horrible spin-offs to the point where even the fanboys are sick of it - just imagine how those of us who never liked the game are feeling. wacko.gif

The only FF7 remake I'd be interested in would be a 2d version of it for GBA. Make it play like the other FF Advance titles, and then, for God's sake, retire it. Already. C'mon, George Lucas retired 'Star Wars' after three horrible sequels, and that was way more profitable.

You've done enough pandering to the FF7 fans; how something for those of us that were playing FF prior to 1997? How about a PS3 version of FF4? 5? 6? What's FF3 - chopped liver?

The only way I would buy a PS3 version of FF7 would be if it included a sworn statement from everyone at Square-Enix that they would never again make another FF7 spin-off, prequel, sequel or movie, no more character cameos, vague references to anything FF7, soundtrack samples or tie-ins.

Back on topic, I think it's a FF7 remake for PS3 - I've even seen the "trailer". I HOPE that it's a remake of an earlier title, a new version of Tactics, a sequel to 8 or 9, an early release of XIII, Mystic Quest, an illustrated FF Encyclopedia...pretty much anything except something FF7-related. I'm sick to gd-death of it.

I would so love to see a sequel to FFIX! I absolutely loved that game. But alas, why would they do that when they could release some more FFVII stuff? The game was cool and all, but enough's enough.

Maybe they could do some kind of tribute to the Final Fantasy Series? Something that could like, tie everything together or recap the entire series. Square needs to do something creative and different, instead of beating a dead horse.

Hard to say what this 'announcement' could be. In my perfect world, it would be that they're going to translate the rest of Final Fantasy: Unlimited (Before, After Spiral, etc.). wub.gif

i know it has been said MANY TIMES, but it would rule if it was either

a Party versus Party thing (story but the PvP was an added bonus)
or something like Super Smash bros.

Edit
am i missing something? people say a remake of VI.....Final Fantasy VIA??? uhh...isnt that a remake?

I don't know what would be so bad about a ffvii remake, I'd be excited about it. But I've never been much of a whiner, so that's probably why. There's nothing wrong with ffvii, if you don't like it, don't buy it or pay attention to it, and leave everybody else to enjoy it. Which I will if that is indeed what this turns out to be. I'll even by a ps3 specifically to play it.

Maybe they're going to completely gut their staff, because they foresee the way they're heading, being dependent upon remakes and cameos.

And If they're going to make a Square-enix version of everyone's favorite fighting game, they better make it good.

I dunno what they'll release to commemorate the 20th aniversary of Final Fantasy. If anything, I'll throw in a guess for a 3d FF1. Seeing as how it was their first milestone success in a while back then and it's saved them from bankruptcy, even to this day.. I think 3d FF1 would be ironic, and especially because now they have better resources circa past the 1990's era (although we didn't have much things back then, the SNES brought me alot of great games that I still enjoy).

Hopefully not another FF7 sequel/prequel. And God forbid FF8.

Anyway, whatever happened to the remakes of VII; VIII; and IX?

I remember back in 2001 in the August issue of the Official Playstation magazine back when Spirits Within was about to be released in theaters and FF X was far far away, Square announced they would release remakes of the three PSx Final Fantasies for the PS2, and here we are in the early life of the PS3. Who knows, maybe Square will release a three game box set of the PSx Final Fantasies remaked, and that might friend would be awesome.

Anyway, I never believe a thing Square says, they lied bigtime to Playstation magazine back then, god knows what lies they are telling now. I mean, back then in that issue, they showed pics of then future projects, Final Fantasy XI (with a picture of Tidus with brown hair in front of Bevelle) and Final Fantas XII (with a picture of god knows what game that was).

They're going to remake every FF game ever on the DS. Except FFIII, which will have a remake a few years later on DS's successor.

I got my new copy of EGM yesterday, and there were a few small clues to possible announcements, though I'm guessing that all these things will appear long before December.

1) Quartermann, the author of EGM's rumor mill since I was in middle school, says that SE is putting out a large number of PSP games this year for US gamers - I would assume at least one of them is FFT, but he alludes to a collection of remakes, new games, and at least one spinoff; so that sounds like a larger collection than just a couple games.
2) Hiromichi Tanaka, in an interview about FF3DS, says that his dev team is not working with him right now but has instead started with a different producer within SE to produce a new DS game that is not a remake.

Oh, there's also a really lame ad for FF6a.

I'm inclined to think that it will be a revelation of a great deal of information regarding the current lineup of handheld games, plus a new announcement or two.

A few days ago we learned about some new Crisis Core information, a week or two ago we got some info about the Ivalice Alliance games, and then we have the recent rush of handheld remakes. Square-Enix is supporting both the DS and the PSP quite strongly, so my guess is either some new PSP or DS games being revealed, or the announcement of Chrono III or Vagrant Story II (sure, it's supposed to be FF-related, but a man can dream....).

And by the way, CSM, Chrono Break doesn't exist anymore. Square-Enix trademarked the name several years ago, but that trademark expired with absolutely no move on Square-Enix to reclaim it or anything. I think that Chrono Break was a proposal that fizzled out sometime early in production. Whatever, I just want a Chrono III.

Well said that man. I myself adore the game, and it excites me so much that i would quite happliy fork out stupid money for a ps3. Bairing that in mind they could shock us by downgrading the game to GBA or DS, Maybe they might move back to nintendo and become WII associated.(You know, since they have milked final fantasy 7 for all its worth money wise then why not go to the biggest selling console out of the newest 3?) Square will never cease to amaze, and quite frankly, all respect too them. I just hope if its a final fantasy 7 remake they don't mess it up.

I would also quite find it interesting if they decided to the above comments of mixing all the Final Fantasy Characters into one game, although it would be a massive game.

Perhaps They will stop producing games after 14, which is in production, even though they havent fully finished 13 yet.

The possibilities are endless, personally i would love a remake, sequels will never do it for me after the horrible X-2.

Edit
Maybe another film?

Quick technical query, would it be possible, perhaps, to have the touch screen display the menus on a DS? Thus freeing up the entire main screen for the action?

If that were the case, it could be quite an intresting approach to take. Though probably not what they're be annoucning as their surprise.

Unless their surprise is they've been bought by Nintendo, third in line of a pointless profits blowout after Reggie Fils-Aime's Solid Gold Toilet ("I just realised it was the one thing I never had.") and the Automatic paper aeroplane folding devices for all employees ("They fly pretty good too. It's already happened several times, to great effect. The pair of DS Castlevania games have the map and a status display on the top screen with the action on the touch screen, while New Super Mario Brothers takes the opposite route by having the action on the main screen with the touchscreen used to move around on the map and use stored items. It's been done, yes, but I would like to see more of it. Rather than forcing unnecessary gameplay features on a game, developers can treat the DS like a more powerful GBA and use the touchscreen to incorporate and streamline menu functions.

I don't want to go too off-topic, but i don't think that ff8 was all that bad unsure.gif ...

That said, i really don't have a clue as to what squeenix has to offer that'll come as a surprise. I guess they're really considering remaking ff7 after all that hype concerning the tech demo for the ps3. At least it would make sense, but then it wouldn't be much of a surprise right?? tongue.gif

I do recall the end of the "making of" in the special edition of the ff7:AC wink.gif dvd in which they said it wasn't over or something like that. Also in the ff7 section someone gave a link to a site concerning the tech demo in which it's stated that for now there was no actual conformation or dismissal of a remake for ff7.

Maybe they're throwing us off so that we won't guess it before they make the announcement?!... Who knows! unsure.gif

And another thing. Why all the complaining about all the ff7 remakes and spin-offs and such? I personally think that the game is the best one of the series. A lot of people got into rpg's through ff7, and some of the spin-offs weren't that bad. Why NOT?? If it's good i'l buy it!

Sorry for the long post ppl. Cheers! thumbup.gif
