Heya, I dusted off my xbox the other day (Makes it sound old hehe) and found my old copy of fable which i remember saying i hated because i was nieve and didnt like the battle system. A replay of the game and now i'm loving it. I was wondering if any other CoN gamers have got to grips with this game and wondered what they thought?

To be honest. I hated the game
It was one big letdown; the game was two easy, too short, too much loading, and came no where near what the creators promised. -------------------- "Have you ever seen a baby do that before?" |

There are two copies? because the lost chapters is the one i have. i must admit i was reading up on it the other day and i heard that peter molyneux promised well over 100hrs but only gave something like 12? see im 17hrs into it, on snowspire and i'm nearly maxed out on everything but will power. Rubbish thing is that earning experience is bloody hard after the arena. Also i dont like the fact that most of the best aspects of the game turn you evil. But its fun in its own way.

I have the PC version of the game (I think it's "Lost Chapters"?) and I really don't like it. The battle system is okay, but I don't like the way the quests go. A bunch of merchants get mad because they run away from you on their stupid NPC AI and get tagged by the monsters? Return to this stupid rock when you have the right kill chain? Whatever. Waste of my time.

It was way to easy. There are so many cheeses to raise magic exp its not even funny. I've beaten it as a Pure Warrioir,Pure Mage and Pure Archer. In like 2 days, It was a fun game but they could have had a diffculty setting or something

The game was a disappointment for me, the combat is a bit frustrating and the Lost Chapters did not do much to improve. The Lost Chapters adds maybe an hour to the gameplay(the game can be completed in a few hours to being with). Fable is a good game, but it could have done a lot better. Perhaps Molyneux will make Fable 2 worthwhile, but it's not one of a 2007 game I'm looking forward to.

I actually enjoyed it somewhat. It's short, but you can spend hours masacring villages and buying dead people's houses.

I remember hearing about Fable long before its release, and the degree of freedom and character choice it would offer. As such, it was immensely disappointing to finally play it.
In particular, it offers considerably less tangible freedom than Bethesda's Morrowind which predates it by some years (although in fairness, Bethesda themselves managed to take a step backwards in this respect with Oblivion). The world is seemingly extremely small, and you're forced down very specific paths across all of it. Aside from good vs. evil and fighter vs. mage vs. archer (plus the cosmetics of hair and tattoos), there was very little you could actually change about your character, and actually following a strongly good or evil path made your character look like some kind of bizarre caricature (never mind the lunacy of an aging system where nothing ages but you and you seem to age a year every time you take a footstep, so that by the end of the game it's surprising to see that your character can still walk). The ideas of property ownership and relationships are fairly well done and remain a step above Morrowind and Oblivion, but other that, it seems like very much the junior effort. It was fun to play through, but maddening at the same time, given the ambition of early ideas compared to the inferior final product. Still, I'm hoping that Lionhead (if they still call themselves that) will make a much better sequel given their experience with the original and the increased power the 360 offers. And this time, perhaps they'll have noticed some other games in the genre and picked up ideas, too. |

I borrowed it from a friend, as it came with a great recommendation...
I kept hearing about all the choices you could make and the freedom. Horribly disappointed by playing it though, to the point where after getting about 6 hours into it, I lost all interest and turned it off. Thankfully, at least I can say I didn't waste money on it. |

I liked fable just cause you can get really drunk and run around killing everything in site. It's funny when the character pukes too. I found a lot of entertainment out of that (also how the screen gets fuzzier as you drink more). Also you can kill the owners of homes and buy their properties. Man the storyline may have been short, but there were tons of extras that made it worth it for me. Well that and the fact that my brother paid for it.

I just got it a few days ago and started playing. I don't know much about the game except you get to choose to be good or evil, or something like that???
Anyway, it looks like a good game, I like how your trained with both a bow AND a sword, plus theirs magic. I liked the game, although it was a tad on the short side.
I think the sequel will expand the personal freedom issue, as wel las world size and linear storyline. At least I hope so anyway. -------------------- Join the Army, see the world, meet interesting people - and kill them. ~Pacifist Badge, 1978 |

I thought it was "Watch that", myself.
It's amusing that the Guildmaster Possible spoilers: highlight to view still bleats on about that sort of thing even if you've killed him. |

Personally, I enjoyed Fable a lot. That may be because I never heard the hype, never had high expectations, and thus wasn't disappointed.
I had a lot of fun just chilling in... whatever the town I bought a house in was called. Every time I completed a mission, I'd return home, head to the bar, and get everyone drunk. Then I'd go to the school herd up all the kids and make them follow me around town. Plus, my guy was a total pimp and all the women (and a fair amount of the men) loved him (I think I did the Manly Arm Pump a bit too much...)... but eventually, I had him settle down and get married. Aww. Hm... now I wanna rent it again. -------------------- Come with me so I can show you how to live Burning the candle at both ends I’m gripping at the walls around me Don’t complicate it I’m addicted to this life I’ll be your token of attention All my lies come down to this -Orgy, "Beautiful Disgrace" |

I personally own a copy of the lost chapters, i have to say after several play thrus it gets way to easy i can clear the game in almost under 5 hours. I did like the battle system, turn based has always annoyed me. Plus the archery was easier to do. I also liked that you could get married and so forth in the game, and system of your charecter aging was pretty good. I cant say i really like the quest master and on several occasions tried to kill him. But all and all i thought it was good.

I have not played the expansion for Fable, just the original. I found the system of powering up your character without the use of the traditional classes and levels to be interesting. The game was not exceptionally difficult, especially with the use of a few magic spells, Slow Time being my personal favorite. However, you could try out the game in whatever style you liked best, be it a melee specialist, archer, mage, or whatever mix you desired. The fact that you gained experience relevant to the skills you used was a good idea as well.
The quests were linear and not incredibly interesting to me, simply a means to an end. There was no attempt at characterization, which was probably deliberate, given the free choice between good and evil, but some more depth in the storyline would have been nice. The aging thing annoyed me because it was too fast, and as Tiddles pointed out, only affects you. In all seriousness, if they really wanted to boast about the personal freedom, why did they force you to be male? There are girls and women out there who play these games too. -------------------- "Getting upset over a trifle would indeed be unmannerly." -Afra to Damia |
