In the majority of Final Fantasies, there is palette swapping. Basically, it's using the same model of a monster, but simply changing its colors or etc. What do you think of this? I think it is a good idea and it's fun to see monsters that you fought near the beginning of the game but stronger this time. An example would be like in various Final Fantasies, there is Behemoth and in some cases, Behemoth Kings.

It saves effort and memory space for the developers while giving plays a hint as to the capabilities/attack patterns/likely loot of the new monster. I'm all for it.

I'm pretty much with karasu here. It makes sense because it'd take up alot of space if every different kind of monster had an entirely different look.

Indeed it would take up alot of space if they drew every different monster into one game. Color changing is better and it doesnt stress artists.

I personally enjoy the palatte swapping, for reasons already stated. Basically, it allows classes of monsters to develop. -CSM

It's a means of cutting down on work and space. If it weren't for the actual need to do it, I'd be against it. In modern games, I fully oppose it - this isn't the NES era where 512k was a huge game. We have DVDs and a model can't take all that much space. In fact, the textures are the ones eating up space.

FFXII is a good example of this. There are a lot of enemies with textures swapped but the same model. While most models look different enough (for instance, bats have different wings because they just change the transparencies on their textures) other enemies remind me of the NES era.

For a company like Square to resort to it in a modern game, that's simply lame. But I can understand it being used in lower-tech environments.

I like it because it allows a smart gamer to figure out what monsters will be like based on the monster that came before. This enemy was a fast physical attacker, so the next one like him will probably be the same. Though it's fun when they throw a quirk into the next enemy in the class without giving it away in the name every once in a while...kinda keeps you on your toes.

I gotta go with the majority on this one. It gives insight to the players and saves space for other things in the game. Palette Swapping isn't that bad really. I guess it is just a matter of preference.

I was just playing through Secret of Mana and that is especially true in that game. I always liked palette swapping because it was fun to see the old monsters given new life.

I know I've been Final Fantasy XII too long - just the other day I referred to a region with no cell service as a Jagd!

Easier then making new monsters i guess of course i would rather see new enemies so i don't think "wow i remember that thing its really weak" and then get owned, i prefer to only be 2 different types of the same enemy any more is over done i think.

I agree with karasuman, in that it saves space for things elsewhere. And come on, who didn't love the Metal Slime in DQ? smile.gif

Seriously! I'm marching along, casually dealing 50+ damage to things when this little gray slime pops up and I smack it for an underwhelming 2 damage. I had to pick my jaw up off the floor... wub.gif

I like the modern palette swap, where they can also change size and looks a little.

Of course, there's no excuse for FFXI, where they don't even bother changing the colour a little. That was just plain lazy.
