I haven't played all that many Final Fantasy games, but my favourite so far is FFIX. I don't care what people say about it, but I think that everything about it screams greatness. It doesn't have to bring newness to the series as long as it has a great story and characters. Those are the two things that make the game for me. I wish that they had kept the snowboarding mini-game from FFVII, though. I can just picture Zidane going down a hill on a snowboard and me laughing at him the entire time.

FFVI is a landmark game. It was the last game on the SNES, the first FF not to be directed by Hironobu Sakaguchi, the largest cast, and so on.

The story, like the game, is also a landmark in the series. The first, and only villian to achieve godhood, something every FF villian wants, is Kefka. But this game was more of a landmark in the series and hence a great game because of its approach. Though goofy at times, the story was told in a mature, grownup manner, and each character was so deeply developed, you could stay enthrawled in this game for months. I know I babbled on about this game being a landmark, but when I think of FFVI's epic story and interesting characters, the word that comes to mind is 'landmark'.

I believe this game was overshadowed by the sheer success of FFVII, but I guess in that way you can call it a diamond in the rough. Despite being slightly overshadowed by FFVII the game has shown preserverence. Think about it, twelve years later, we are still visiting websites devoted to it. If it is not one of the best for any other reason, it should be just for its longevity.

The main reason FFVI is the best FF game, is that, without this game, their would be no FF 7,8 9,10, or 12. It affected the way Final Fantasy games are made.

There is no "best" Final Fantasy because they each appeal to different people. It is entirely dependent on the person's opinion.

I should probably mention that FFXII has taken up the number 3 slot of all time, behind FFIV and FFVI of course. -CSM

Well, I have played neither XI nor XII, though I will be playing XII after Christmas. smile.gif But VI and VIII are my favorites. It's a tough call overall, as there are things I like about each game in the series, but I like VI for the many different characters and the fact that most of them had an interesting story to them, and for its wonderful music. VIII is for Squall and Rinoa. I am a person who doesn't speak much, especially to people that I don't know, and don't really care what they think of me as a result, so it was easy to identify with the standoffish SeeD. Seeing him jolted out from behind his stiff facade by such a free spirit was delightful, and I loved that it took time and drastic events for it to happen, rather than it just happening overnight.
