I said by now.
At this point, I would keep him in.(he hasn't blown it as much as plummer, and as you said too much has been invested in him. But isn't the younger Hasslebeck on the giants? last I checked he was. And he probably has raw talent just as much as Eli. If I was Caoch, owner et cetera of the giants I would tell eli to get more accurate or he can expect to be benched. Maybe pick up some Peyton work ethic. It was officially stated during the game that Cutler will start. I can sleep a little easier tonight. -------------------- "Have you ever seen a baby do that before?" |

Tim Hasselbeck is now the third string quarterback for a reason. And at that, he also has never thrown a pass in the regular season since he's been on the Giants. Last year's stats include him playing 4 games, 0 completions in 0 attempts, 2 rushes for -3 yards. He stood there and handed the ball off to Tiki or Jake. Tim was the guy you went to when the game was out of hand, either in losing or winning by a bunch. And pardon me as I scoff at you say he has "raw talent". I'm aware that he started a couple games for the Redskins in the '03 season, I even recall rooting for him to stomp the Eagles (didn't happen, of course). But his numbers weren't dazzling. Hell, they were downright less-than-pedestrian. In 7 games with the Skins, 95/177, 5 TDs, 7 INTs, 3 Fumbles, and a QB rating of 63.6. That's not quite the numbers you want to lead a football team, let alone a high pressure team from New York. I realize what you're trying to say, but Eli is still the guy.

Quote (Cloud_Strife510 @ 27th November 2006 19:57) Quote I th9ink by this time next year, no matter what happens this year, Denver fans will be glad for the switch. I'm already glad that there's a switch. but the season still isn't over. If the chains get moving Denver will make the playoffs. and for all we know Cutler could be ready to hold his own in the superbowl. Eli Manning is on a rough patch, it's happened to every great football player in the history of the sport. No one can perform at 100% at all times, during every game. With all the injuries on their defensive line, the first few loses and the lack of morale, it's easy to understand why any player, especially someone relatively still new like Manning would crumble under the pressure. Still, this isn't a reason to bench the player at all. He'll come out of it. Hassleback isn't a bad player, but he doesn't have the skill or potential that Manning has and he certainly doesn't have the experience. Also, you can't just tell a player to "Get more accurate". That's like me telling you to "get less dumb". Eli has a mean arm when he's on his game and has made some great plays under pressure in the past. He's been through ridiculous training during the last few off seasons and improved his game drastically, as any game pre-losing streak will show you. That being said, back on topic, I'm glad Plummer is benched and this whole thing is over with, to be honest it's gotten more exposure than I think really mattered at all. -------------------- Okay, but there was a goat! |

I was unaware of Tim hasslebeck's history. His low rating is probably from lack of experience. But you're right. Eli is their best bet, so that just points more fingers to Coughlin. Eli needs a coach who can break him in, and Coughlin is not one of those coaches. Quote Also, you can't just tell a player to "Get more accurate". That's like me telling you to "get less dumb". Eli has a mean arm when he's on his game and has made some great plays under pressure in the past. He's been through ridiculous training during the last few off seasons and improved his game drastically, as any game pre-losing streak will show you. He still is off the mark all too often. Eli manning needs this break from Toomer, have two tall fast receivers, made it to where eli never had to be very accurate in the first place, just throw it high enough so that only his receivers could get it. (this is similiar to why Bellichek had no problem letting Branch go). No matter how hard Eli has worked he stills needs to work on his accuracy, period. And this isn't a rough patch for Eli, he always starts to take a dump towards the end of the season, and you damn well can tell a QB to work on his accuracy, you just have to have the balls to tell the guy to get to work, it's the coaches job to coach the players and have them improve, to orchestrate the team to victory. They all can't be like Peyton Manning and take it upon themselves to do it. something needs to change with the giants, a coach to break in the QB or the QB -------------------- "Have you ever seen a baby do that before?" |

I think that's the problem with Coughlin; He's the sort of coach that actually tells his players things like, "be more accurate" instead of teaching. When you have a team that has a lot of potential in it's younger components then you must teach them NFL football. Yes, be hard on them but allow them to learn. I don't feel as if Coughlin is doing so.
That and his gameplan is a consistent head-scratcher to anyone that happens to have the misfortune to watch the game. Oh, and benching Eli would be ridiculous...Though, I still am muy jealous of San Diego. Jake Plummer. Ya know what gets me? People equating shared last names with shared talent. The Hasselbeck brothers and the Manning brothers are far apart in terms of talent and skill, with the older sibling being the dominant one in both cases. Matt Hasselbeck is obviously a top tier QB in the NFL, as is Peyton Manning. Tim Hasselbeck and Eli Manning, however, are still developing in terms of skill and experience. Raw talent? Maybe, but talent only carries one so far, just look at Reggie Bush, or Alex Smith, or any number of high draft choices that are STILL underproducing. Talent in the NFL is really only good for getting there. It's the hard work and practice and actual game experience that sets the elite few apart from the also rans.
Whew...just had to get that off my chest. -------------------- This is a webcomic and gaming blog where I rant about nonsense. Enjoy. I was a soldier, now I just play one in video games. |

Quote Jake Plummer. Does that make my post not off topic? his name has become synonymous with QB controversy. so this whole thread is about "QB controversy". Quote I think that's the problem with Coughlin; He's the sort of coach that actually tells his players things like, "be more accurate" instead of teaching. When you have a team that has a lot of potential in it's younger components then you must teach them NFL football. Yes, be hard on them but allow them to learn. I don't feel as if Coughlin is doing so. I couldn't agree more, although I had believed that I had made it Clear Eli needs a coach who can teach him in one of my posts, but it doesn't seem that way. Quote People equating shared last names with shared talent. We were all just saying that the raw potential is definitely there, Brothers tend to be alike. And also there is the "little brother" syndrome where the younger child will strive to outdo the older one. So taking all that into account, we were basically all discussing potential. Still a good point to bring up though, looking back we did seem somewhat bent towards that. -------------------- "Have you ever seen a baby do that before?" |

As a resident of Denver (or close enough), I'm pretty much required by law to hate Jake Plummer. So yeah, everyone I know is glad about his replacement, whether it be temporary or longer-lasting.

Today is the big day for the Broncos. Any predictions on how Cutler is going to fair?
My prediction: Cutler throws 2 TD/2 INT, 203 yds. This is going to be a grand day of NFL football. I've got my beer, nachos, recliner and fantasy roster set. Let's rumble Oh, and GO BLUE! If Cutler throws it to Javon walker I'm thinking he could get up to three touchdowns. Javon Walker is a beast who rivals Steve Smith, the closer he gets to the end zone the more open he gets.
I don't think Cutler will leave the game without an interception though. Edit Cutler finished 10-for-21 for 143 yards with two TDs and two interceptions. Not a bad rookie outing at all. He had his tema in position to win, through both some very good plays and some very costly rookie mistakes. I liked what I saw. I think he'll be one of the good ones.
