Is there a way to figure out which version my FFIII U.S. Cartridge is? I'd like to use Relm in a later playthrough but I want to know if my copy has the "Sketch" bug before I try using "Sketch" and screw something up. In other words, are there any other differences between the two versions besides the sketch bug?

I don't know if this helps: both labels on the cartridge are intact, but I don't have the box or manual or anything else.

Hmm. I was always under the impression that every FFIII cartridge was sketch buggable. I guess the only thing to do is try to figure out whether it was issued in '94 -- mine was from Christmas '94, and bugged each time like a charm.

You should keep in mind, though, that regular sketching won't be a problem. You have to try to sketch an invisible Intangir, or Gau coming back from the Veldt, or something similarly weird for anything to happen. I sketched like crazy on mine for years, and it only bugged when I wanted it to.

Master Zed's FF6 bug list and sketch bug guide both say this is something in only FFIII U.S. Version 1.0, and the list lists other bugs that are in "FFIII U.S., both versions."

We were trying to figure out a way to tell via the back label over at Mnrogar's, but that never went anywhere since no one seemed to have a 1.1 cart IIRC, yet there were a lot of numbers indicative of 1.0. You'll just have to use the bug and see.

Once I beat the game I'll try to use the bug and see. I'll let you guys know if I have a cartridge without the bug, and then I'll post pictures of the labels or something.

Mine did bug when I didn't want it to-- it went off in random weird places such as the Phoenix Cave. (Actually, I remember that incident because usually I never bother to use Relm since I won't let her sketch, and then the one time I did let her use it, the glitch went off. Argh.)

I've never really sat down and tried to exploit the sketch glitch, but it can sometimes go off when you're just doing normal things, rather than trying to sketch something weird. (Mine was from fall '94.)

It's not random:

Ah, okay. See, I wasn't sketching enemies for which Sketch would definitely fail, so I assumed it was random; presumably they were still misses at sketching, then? By "random," I guess I meant that I couldn't predict whether Sketch was going to work smoothly or whether it was going to glitch my game. It always froze when it glitched, too, and I never got anything good out of it.
