I'm pretty sure that there are at least some people that have heard about the 12 hour challenge on FFIX. You have to race through the game and get to the terrace where you beat Lich (Memoria) in 12 hours or less. If you can do it, you get Steiner's ultimate weapon, Excalibur II.
I was wondering if anybody has ever attempted it or even done it. I personally don't think it's possible because you'd be so under-levelled by the time you got there you'd be toast. -------------------- Why, hello guys! It's VERY possible. You just have to be pretty familiar with the game so you have a battle plan going in, and some luck so that you can get your hits in and keep random encounters low, and the like. There are definitely ways you can be at low levels and take down the enemies you run into. By the time you get up to Memoria, you're usually around levels 20-40, which does give you plenty of HP to survive, as long as you know how.
Not only is it possible, you can also go back and get everyone else's ultimate weapons, and your stats are also pretty low, so it's good for stat-maxxing. |

I've done it. Back in 2002 or so when I was heinously addicted to FF IX, I dedicated my third playthrough to making it through this. If you know exactly what you're doing the whole time, open/close your PS1 to skip FMVs, minimize random encounters, and only spend time on very specific Steals, Blue Magics, and sidequests, then it's possible. Hell, I had almost thirty minutes to spare, and I'm sure it can be done much faster. There's even a guide dedicated to doing so on Gamefaqs.
It's really a shame, though, racing through the game forces you to ignore doing things like synthing and exploring, consequently preventing you from getting all of the best armor and weapons for each character. Sure, you have the strongest weapon in the game, but at what cost? -------------------- |

Isn't it only a little bit more powerful than Ragnarok anyway? Does it have any noteworthy abilities to merit obtaining it?

Quote (Zeromus_X @ 28th November 2006 02:38) Isn't it only a little bit more powerful than Ragnarok anyway? Does it have any noteworthy abilities to merit obtaining it? I've got the guide book for this. It has only 8 more attack than Steiner's second best weapon as I recall. And no, it only has Shock... It would be good if it had Climhazzard or something else of Beatrix. Or even that move Steiner does on Blank at the start of the game! That would be credible. -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. Me on the Starcraft. |

I think one of the ways you can finish the 12 hour Final Fantasy IX challenge is by having a PS1. I believe that some people were able to skip the FMVs and get quickly back into the game. It was something like that, but it's kind of sad that the game can be finished in less than 15 hours...

I don't actually plan on doing it; I dilly-dally way too much and I couldn't enjoy the game as much as I want to. Thanks for your insight anyways, I could use the advice if I ever get bored and want to do it.
