In my curiosity surrounding Final Fantasy III for the DS, I decided to pop onto wikipedia and see what's up with it. It seems interesting and all, but it wasn't until the last sentence of the article that I really got excited.
Quote According to Director Tanaka, the game sold so well such that they are now considering remaking other Final Fantasy games What do you think theyn could be planning on remaking on the DS. Something tells me that by the end of '07, we will be expecting a remake of FFVII, seeing as it will be the 10th anniversary. But who knows? Any other speculations? -------------------- Can you pull down the dawn? It's been so dark since you've been gone and we've been begging for the morning to come. At the risk of running against the grain, I would prefer Squaresoft to stop wringing money out of the past. They made good games that have nostaglia value, great. Can they move on and focus on developing new and creative directions? Perhaps put that money that would've gone into remakes into more edgy, experimental titles that could falter?
Hollywood gets a lot of flak for always doing the same old rehash, remakes and what not (though at least their remakes have new actors and generally update the plot). Now we're seeing the gaming industry fall into the same pit of repetition. That the fans are accepting this will only hurt us in the long run. I'm not so sure about completely overhauling a classic game, but when it comes to re-releasing old games for new systems, I'm all for it. I have to admit, my old Snes has taken a few beatings over the years, and I'm concerned that soon I won't be able to play my favorate ol' games anymore. The controllers are already faulty, and playing something like FFVI is becoming a big hassle. Bringing them out on newer, perhaps sturdier systems seems like a good way of preserving these games for future generations. Although, when the Wii comes out, this sort of idea will be obsolete anyhow.
Still, I think I'd enjoy being able to play my favorate FF's anywhere, anytime. Portable is Beautiful baby. -------------------- TURKEY! - (The only way not to get blocked for using Fowl Language) |

The more the merrier. If these games give them more cash to make new games, then I have no issue with it.
Besides, I'm a sucker who'll pay money to play the same game I've already played four times just for extra updated content. :D -------------------- |

This is an excellent point; that old systems are breaking down and re-releases on new hardware would be the only way to keep up with the ancient software. I know my own NES and SNES have electrical issues these days. However, as you noted, an official emulation system that allows for the resale of software that is outdated, but basically unchanged from its original form, would be ideal. Similar to 'remastering' DVD's (porting software), this would not sap creative energy nor should it cost anywhere close to developing a remake. -------------------- Visions of Peace - Four Generals, One Empire, and the Returners caught in the middle. |

The only remakes I support are those that are bold and change things. MGS twin snakes, Resident Evil 1 on Gamecube... both remakes, both, IMO,far better than the originals. I want a serious payoff for thier investment and my investment, like with RE and MGS. Expanded gameplay, expanded setting, expanded story, better graphics, extras...
But to just polish the graphics, give you an extra sword, and then slap it on Xbox720 or PS4 is just cheap and will, as Elessar says, ultimately be bad for videogames. God knows innovation is dying already and so is story. -------------------- "Only the dead have seen the end of their quotes being misattributed to Plato." -George Santayana "The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here..." -Abraham Lincoln, prior to the discovery of Irony. |

In my opinion, remakes go wrong when they turn into a different style of game--I know they replicated the 2d worlds in 3d for FFIII DS but it just seems wrong, I would've prefered a port myself. I would personally hate to see a fully 3d remake of FF7.

While a lot of the charm of the 8 and 16 bit FFs comes from its simple graphics, I wouldn't see a problem with updating FF7-9 with PS3 graphics, for example. Voice acting is a bit more controversial though.

Only fools rely on past glories. I'd rather the company forge some new territory and deliver the undeliverable rather than exhuming those 8-bit games from yesteryear and slopping 'em onto the newest system. Sure it's easy to port something, clean up the translation, add a mini-game or extra character... I wouldn't shell out money for something a game I already own, 'less there's some mind-blowing change, and not just a graphical remake (yawn).

I'm all for the remakes of old games. It gives me a chance to play games that I never would've had a chance to play otherwise. Of course, it would be great if they would come up with some new games too. You can't remake games forever.

i don´t mind remakes, as im really against emulating games... as for the FFIII Remake, i find the 3d graphics wrong, optimised graphics would be fine, 3d makes it remind me too much of games like spyro the dragon ( which is bad )

The thing with Final Fantasy III, it's mainly because they did not release III in the US(at least to my belief). Besides that, I believe that many people would be excited if they could download the PlayStation era games on their PS3. From what I hear, Sony decided to steal one of Nintendo's ideas and allow players to be able to download PlayStation games for their PS3. I believe it has some good potential.

A non-“horribly outdated†version of FFIV would be nice.
And no, slightly changing the color depth and slapping on an optional dungeon is not what I have in mind. This post has been edited by ThroneofDravaris on 14th November 2006 06:19 -------------------- |

So what, then?
Because I LIKE 16-bit graphics and 256 colors and Mode 7 and MIDI music... I also like VGA/EGA graphics and that's why I, and basically everyone else, hated the 4th Monkey Island game which destroyed the atmosphere of the previous three. -------------------- |

It's been discussed into oblivion in the FFT forum, but I would absolutely love to see aremake of FFT with polished graphics and a better translation, even if they didn't change a single thing about the gameplay and story. Especially the story, actually.
