It's mentioned repeatedly that Edgar and Sabin are twins, yet Sabin calls Edgar "Older Brother" and the Matron also refers to Edgar as the older of the two. Does anyone else find this strange?
I know that the japanese are very conscientious about their age as an aspect of social hierarchy, but isn't this a little extreme? If they are indeed twins, Edgar's birth would, most likely, be only MINUTES prior to Sabin's. By the way.. first post ![]() |

I guess even if they're only minutes apart, Sabin could say that Edgar is older. Maybe only a couple of minutes is a large difference to Sabin.

Yep, Sabin definetly calls Edgar "big brother" or something like that at least once. I was kinda suprised when I found out that they were twins, actually. In real life, a few twins/triplets that I know ends up with the older one being the one looked up to, so maybe it's the same for the Figaro twins (then again, in real life, the older twin's usually the one saying "I should know, I'm the oldest")

Twins do this frequently, they refer to the one that was out first as the older one.

Perhaps it's merely a sly, fourth-wall breaking dig at King Edgar Roni Figaro the Whateverth's intellegence and public survielance polices?
In all honesty and joking aside, it could easily be another so-called translation error. Or, as I think it to be, a little bit of characterisation, like a subtle way of reinforcing some things. Edgar is the more mature of the two, so it's safe to assume he was the big brother figure of the two. Well he could be calling Edgar big brother because Edgar is king
Also wasn't there some written text that gave back story to the Figaro brothers, and for some reason Sabin was physically weak (which is why he went to train with Duncan). Maybe at first Sabin started calling Edgar Big brother because Edgar had to take on some more older brother characteristics at that time. well that's my two cents Quote Perhaps it's merely a sly, fourth-wall breaking dig at King Edgar Roni Figaro the Whateverth's intellegence and public survielance polices? It is a pretty big deal in Japan who's the older brother and who's the younger one, even with twins. It determines all kinds of things, including how they'd address each other and what language they'd use, which is sort of necessary to know before you can move on. In fact, I'm almost sure Sabin's saying "Nii-san" there, which is what Kadaj calls Cloud in Advent Children, if you'll remember. And Cecil calls Golbez. Definitely a Japanese thing.

I have read about cases where there were twins actually born days apart. The mother would go into labor, but only birth one child, then days later, do it all again. But, then again, I'm no doctor, and wasn't at any of these events to verify any truth behind it all, so, yeah. Just a thought.

If you've ever known twins, one always considers him or herself older than the other. I'd think the same case applies here. And I've also noticed this sort of thing in Japanese culture. In some anime, for example Naruto with Neiji and that purple haired chick, their fathers were twins and they made a big deal out of that.

Japanese siblings commonly refer to each other as "older/younger brother/sister", so it's probably just a literal translation of Sabin's words in the Japanese version, even though the age difference isn't enough that an English speaker would have mentioned it.

did you know in japanese twins arent the same as here. they used to say that the second twin was the oldest because age represented maturity and the mature twin would nobly let the other one out first. so the twin americans say is oldest the japanese used to say is youngest. i learned that in another video game actually and not even in my japanese class.
anyway in my version of the game (japanese) they dont say older brother but younger brother so i think the translation is just wrong or maybe they use the other definition of twin.
