There was a TV show about a crime-fighting family with a girl named Celes on it. It was pronounced "Sel less," with the accent on the less.

Sabin- Sah (the a as in "Ack") been
Maduin- Mad you in or Mah jew in
Celes- Seh less
Terra- Teehr uh (the E as in error)
Gestahl- Guess TALL
Ifrit- IF rit
Shiva- like a slang "Shiver." "Shiva'!"
Umaro- Ooh MArrow
Strago- STRAY go
Cyah- Sigh ann
Chocobo- Choke a bow
Nikeah- Nike- yuh (silent E. Not to be confused with the shoe brand.)
Gerad- Jair id
Gau- Gow

My mom used to pronounce "Chocobo" as "Chocobob," and I know someone who pronounces it "Coke-a-bow."

And while we're on the subject of pronunciation, it's TIE-dus, not TEE-dus.

Actually it's 'Tida'.

I thought it was 'ar-se-ho-le', but I suppose I must be wrong.

Terra- Ter-ah.
Celes -Se les
Gesthal - ges tal
Cyan - Si-anne

Doma -Do-mah
Figaro- Fee-gah-roe
Jidoor -Gee-door
Kohlinghen- Ko-ling-hen
Narshe -Nar-sh
Nikeah -Ni-ke-ah
Thamasa -Tha ma sa
Tzen - Tz-en
Miranda -Me-ran-dah
Albrook -al-brook
Mobliz - Moh-bliz
Veldt- velt. Like the real word
Zozo- zo zo

Regarding chocobo I regard the pronuciation heard in FFX as the US pronunciation, and mine as the UK pronunciation. choc-oh-boh. Not cho-ko-boh.

Wow, that's alot of different pronounciations. I have a habit of pronouncing names wrong...it also may be affected by region and accents. Anyway, here's my list.

Terra - I pronounce it how most people would
Locke - the e is silent
Edgar - I pronounce it how most people would
Sabin - (rhymes with "stabbin' or "grabbin'")
Celes - (this one has always been tough for me...when I first saw it I pronounced it "cells" and recently I started calling her "cell-iss" because I thought her name was short for Celestine)
Cyan - like the color
Gau - (rhymes with cow or now)
Shadow - (self-explanatory)
Setzer - (pronounced like most people would)
Strago - (Strag rhymes with drag or bag, o sounds like the letter o)
Relm - (self-explanatory)
Mog - (self explanatory)
Umaro - (OO-muh-row)
Gogo - (just two "go's"
Kefka - (kef rhymes with deaf or clef, ka sounds like kuh)
Gestahl - (Ges sounds like guess, tahl sounds like tall)
Narshe - (I always pronounce it like the e at the end is silent...recently I've learned it's not supposed to be silent, but I can't stand saying the extra syllable, it just doesn't sound right)
Thamasa - (Tah-MAH-suh)

Being polish, I generaly assumed some other pronounciations for a few things, mostly due to the fact, that I used to play FFVI when I wasn't too familiar with english yet (over 10 years ago).

So for me it would be:

Cyan - Tzee-yan
Celes - Tzeh-less
Locke - Lock-ee (I didn;t know then, that the "e" is silent wink.gif)
Tritoch - Tree-toh (ch is pronounced as "h" in polish)
Narshe - Nar-sheh (with "sh" like in "cosher", not like in "she")

The rest was more or less as most other people, except for the ones I didn't read correctly wink.gif

everyone says all of these names wrong. they arent just open to interpretation because in japanese they have exact prononciations that everyone reads the same. some examples are its she-liss not sell-ess or celeste and its mash not sabin or saybin or whatever. this thread isnt even necessary because if everyone just educated themselves theyd already know.

i agree with karasuman on both points. as for narshe, i always thought it just as it is spelled but with a silent e.

Wrong.

Let's see, first of all, it's written SE-RI-SU, which, if you had any amount of experience speaking with Japanese speakers (and I don't mean people in your high-school Japanese 101 class tongue.gif) STILL sounds like "seh-liss" even in Japanese.

As for names like Tina/Terra and Sabin/Mash, yeah... whatever.

As for how I pronounce some of the names...

CELES - SEL-liss
CAYENNE - kai-ANN (like the pepper)
SABIN - sa-BEAN (rhymes with "green")
STRAGO - STRAH-goh (first part rhymes with "claw")

And every fourth-year japanese student knows that you can write "She" in Japanese as Shi combined with a chiisai e. In katakana that would look like: シェ.

Im not saying the original poster was incorrect, just that "she" exists as a rare japanese syllable.

Child, this isn't about pronuncing the names wrong or right, it's about how people pronunced them when they read them, so shut yer trap.

Also, for the sake of being on topic, and since I'm having phonetics class tomorrow, I'll write some (the less obvious to me ones) of the names and ask my teacher how should they be transcribed.
Queen's English, though.

Well, sure, but you can make any sound in katakana nowadays. They're even changing "b" v-sounds to actual "v" sounds. It's heretical!

However, that wasn't the point. The point was that the Japanese "Celes" does not contain aforementioned "she" syllable. wink.gif It kind of makes me wonder something, though.

Did our dear chou mean to pronounce it -

"she" as in "shephard" (シェ)
or
"she" and in "she is a girl" or "banshee" (シ)

XD Of course, neither one of those syllables are in "Celes" anyway, so... yeah.

Okay, I'm beating a dead horse now, so I'll shut up.

I was just wondering... When you people say you pronounce Terra as "Tear-a", do you mean "tear" as in ripping something or "tear" as in teardrop? I've been reading through and got a little confused.

mu-RAH-SAH-mey

(except not too heavy on the pronunciation of "mey" -- it's like a cross between "meh" and "may," kind of like the "me" in "merry" )

Incidentally, its counterpart "Masamune" should be pronounced "mah-SAH-MUU-ney"
