what do you all think the best final fantasy has been so far..?

A tie between 1, 3, 6, and 10 for me.

7 gets championed as the best of the series, but it never really connected with me.

If I had to pick just one, and only one....? Probably 10. Though the others I mentioned are all damn impressive games.

Edit
How could I forget Tactics? Thanks Lasz. FFT for the #2 slot.

I usually can't decide between 6 or Tactics as my favorite. It's either the best combination of characters and storyline against the best combination of battle mechanics and customization system.

I've only played MQ, Tactics, 6, 7, and 8 to any extent, but I think it's a tie between 6 and 7. 7 is longer and darker, but it's also more confusing, and has foul language and suggestive themes that I don't like. 6 is a great game with awsome music and funny dialog instead of profanity, but it isn't as long and involved.

Best of the Final Fantasies, huh? I gotta say FF8. It has the most captivating storyline and a battle system that allows for customization of characters' stats. Then, the elimination of MP makes spellcasting even easier, yet it's still challenging because you don't want to use too many of the magics that are junctioned to your stats.

Next time, use the SEARCH option at the top before you make the same thread that's been done back then so many times.

I liked Final Fantasy 5 the best. It had indepth characters, plot, gameplay mechanics, hard difficulty, and most of all: fun. Job systems always attracts me into an RPG because making your characters into anyone you want is better than just equipping some stupid orbs to "combine them together" to use Fire against all enemies! In FF5 you could build up your own dream party and on top of that you could mix them with other abilities. Say... a Ninja that uses an ability that can attack four consecutive times (Put a Double Lance on each of their hands and watch them attack like mad!), or even a Summoner that can summon monsters twice a turn.

So to this day FF5 still remains as my first favorite FF with decent fun gameplay. It's also nice hearing people's hints and tips for customization for it.

EDIT:

No it doesn't. It's pathetic. "OH WOW GUYZ IMMM HAVE 100 FULL CURE AND 99 ULTIMA IM USE THEM ONLY!!!11" The no MP thing in FF8 made weaker magic useless and uncaring for because of that. Whenever I start running out of MP in other Final Fantasies (or in other words, better rpgs), I always use Ethers if I have any, or I just make good use of weaker spells if my MP limit is enough for that.

challenging if you're a non-RPGer and challenging if you're just going to go back to the draw points and suck out free "magic amounts" from there. No offense, but that didn't convince me at all for FF8.

So.... when did the thread morph from "what's your favorite FF" to "let me bash your reasons for liking this one particular FF"?

All FF's, even FFVII, offered me something that I liked. I think the ingenuity of the series is what gives it the staying power that it has. Some things in every game are hit and miss with the audience playing it (the lack of random encounters in FFXII is a good example), but for the most part you have to credit Squenix for trying to do new things with the franchise.

Square does try to offer new features to each Final Fantasy games they release, but they didn't try well enough on 8 imo. I don't have to credit them if something they make sucks to me alot. I couldn't stand FF4a's bonus dungeon because it was too random and unchallenging. It was the same mediocre game with worse difficulty ported to the GameBoy Advance.

Final Fantasy VI, IX, III, and V in that order.

VI- The music, story, characters, amazing.
IX- The Music and Characters. Almost as good as VI.
III- It's oldschool and got a remake. Oh and Jobs... AND Onion Knight.
V- Jobs... and the wonderful gameplay.

FF VIII and FFT are tied as my all-time favorite FFs.
FFT has an intriguing storyline with many plot twists, unpredictable outcomes for the first-time player, and totally customizable characters. The fact that YOU are in control of your characters' and main character's jobs and abilities from start to finish (for the most part) makes it even more fun and the replay factor is outta' this world.

As for FFVIII, this one is special to me for the fact that it was my first FF and one I truly enjoy despite all of the FFVIII criticsm. The story was awesome, the graphics are second-to-none on the PSX era of FF, and the realistic characters make it easy to identify with some of them. Laguna, Quistis, and Seifer even make it that much better.

FFVII and FFIX are tied as second favorites.
FFVII wasn't even up there until I saw AC and was moved by some of the scenes and the interviews and special features on the second disc in the DVD, and intirguing characters like Cloud, Aerith, Tifa, Red XIII, Cait Sith, Sephiroth and most of the entire cast and who doesn't like the Turks? Over-hyped and overrated with ridiculous fanboys/girls aside, this is a great game.

FFIX had a real good story as well with great characters. The deformed and animal-resembling characters didn't really make it for me (at first anyway) and of course, the main reason why this is in second place with VII is because of the awesome graphics and magic animations, and my favorite FF villain (maybe video game villain) of all time, Kuja!!

I like them all for different reasons, and without typing another big list post, I'll just say that FFIII, IV, and VI are pretty high up there.

by replaying them in my FF...replayings, ive gained a newfound respect for X and X-2 (very suprising for me)

despite this, my ranking is

1. FF VIII
1. (tie) Tactics
2. FF IX
3. FF VII
4. FF IV-GBA, the extra dungeon adds replay
5. FF X
6. FF X-2
7. FF V
8. FF VI
9. FF I
10. FF IV
11. FF II

yeah....FF II had an ok story, but the ending is very anticlimactic, Leon was too....'what?!?' and the emperor is very annoying...and dont get me started about leveling up. i beat it with 20 hp with maria....yup...

I'm actually going to go into a serious discussion as to why FFVI is the best. These topics have been done to death, and no one ever actually gives their favorite game thought.

It has the best music and sound by far. It really pushed the SNES to its limits, and it gave a theme to each character. Speaking of the characters, they were actually given DEPTH in this game, as supposed to several later titles. The battle system was also fun, as was teaching Gau rages. The characters were memorable, especially Kefka as a villain, and pretty much every other reason I've said in threads past. -CSM

My fave might have been FFVIII if you didn't have to use magic as if they were items (never really got the hang of all that).

FFVI and FFVII had the best music (i think), FFVI was my first RPG and it kicked ass, although now i seem to be playing FFVII more and more so i'll have to go with that. thumbup.gif

Its so hard to pick a favourite when it come to Final Fantasy because how of how good they are and how many there are not including the main series. However my favourite for gaming and sentimental reasons would be Final Fantasy 10. The music, polt and character depth is out of this world and there is so much to do on it. So much gameplay. But it has one major downfall worser then all the Final Fantasies put together... DODGING 200 LIGHTING BOLTS!
Yes my favourite FF game is FFX.

I would have to say my faviroute ff game would be FF8 because of its music. FF8 has brilliant FMV's full of action and the all the characters: looks, attitude and fighting stlye suit them. Also Zell's in it tongue.gif

FFIX since i liked how it was something different after playing VIII, the music was good, it may not have the best Cid, but also the FMV's were just amazing in that game.

Well, I guess it's list time...

Rated by how much fun I had playing them at the time.

Final Fantasy (NES) -- 7/10 -- This was my first FF, and it has always stayed pretty near-and-dear to my heart. That's not to say it's the most amazing game ever, by any measure, but it managed to be interesting and engaging enough to keep a 7-year-old occupied, even with the not-so-flashy graphics.

Final Fantasy II (NES) -- 2/10 -- Honestly, I didn't like this game much at all. The departure from the level system was too much of a jump for me, and my characters never turned out quite right.

Final Fantasy III (NES) -- 6/10 -- I love job systems! This would have gotten an 8/10, except the translation I had cut out about half-way through, and I had trouble after that.

Final Fantasy IV (SNES) -- 7/10 -- This was my second FF, and it kept me busy for a very long time. I think this was the first time I actually felt any empathy for video game characters.

Final Fantasy V (SNES) -- 8/10 -- I'll say it again: I love job systems! Really, that's the main thing that gave this game life to me. Any of your characters could be any job at any time... sweet.

Final Fantasy VI (SNES) -- 9/10 -- Prettttty. This game was gorgeous when I first played it, and it's still gorgeous to this day. Couple that with a complete cast of memorable characters (most of which even had DEPTH *gasp*), and a unique magic system, and you've got a gem.

Final Fantasy VII (PSX) -- 7/10 -- Everything about this game screamed "average" to me when I played it the first time. I wasn't interested in the characters, or the story, or the graphics. I had just finished FF6 when I picked this up, and wasn't quite impressed. Still, it's a decent game, and on subsequent play-throughs, I learned to like it a bit more.

Final Fantasy VIII (PSX) -- 1/10 -- Well, there's not much to say here. It seemed all flash and no substance, and I couldn't stand the junctioning system. At all. The upside was Triple Triad. smile.gif

Final Fantasy IX (PSX) -- 7/10 -- Old-school goodness. To me, this was a total homage to the old games, and it really shined through. Even though I wasn't a big fan of most of the characters, this was my favorite FF on the Playstation.

Final Fantasy X (PS2) -- 4/10 -- Meh. I didn't like the leveling system, or the fact that the game was so damn linear. Despite that, I did finish it, and overall it wasn't that bad.

Final Fantasy X-2 (PS2) -- ??/10 -- Can't really comment. Never played it for more than an hour.

Final Fantasy MQ (SNES) -- 15/10 -- The greatest story ever told, with the greatest gameplay of the modern era. Plus it was ridiculously hard to boot. wink.gif Okay okay, it gets a 1/10.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (GBA) -- 5/10 -- Frankly, I found it very shallow in comparison to its predecessor. See below.

Final Fantasy Tactics (PSX) -- 10/10 -- Ah, and here we are at my favorite game of all time. An engaging plot, with the best gameplay I've ever found in a game. As I've said repeatedly, I love job systems, and this has, in my humble opinion, the best job system in existance. I've literally put in thousands upon thousands of hours into this game, and it's still not old. I'm in the middle of a game right now, actually. All I can hope for now is another game that uses the exact same gameplay, with a new story and more missions to beat. >_>

So, short answer: FFT. biggrin.gif

I'm confused...so is 6 your favorite or 7?

Personally, I've always been an avid fan of Final Fantasy 6 due to the book-like quality of it's story and plot development. I'd definately pick it up and read it if there were a series of some sort.

Of course, along with the music and characters etc... I won't go into it all, because like R51 said; it's been done to death. But it's always nice to see people still care and appreciate the series after all these years. wink.gif

Btw, I started reading this part and was in shock...don't scare me like that again!! lol

I daresay chou meant that FFVII was "the great slide into stupidity and ignorance" which I strongly disagree with.

Anyway, my favourite is FF2 with a huge world, fun character personalities...a few nice twists-or-not, a unique system and of course, groovy music.

Plus: the first Cid in the series! Woot!

Oh my! I didn't want to think it was meant that way, lol. But to each his own I guess.

2 was mildly fun for me. I just finished it on the GBA in a day or so. I just didn't get much use of the magic system; but the story was good.

I didn't believe this when I read it, as it seemed to me that there was a Cid somewhere in FFi.

Did some research, and it turns out that you are right..... kinda. happy.gif

The NES version of FFI did not mention Cid, but the DoS and Origins versions did. In Lefein, he is mentioned in conversation as a great Leifinish professor.

I played the NES version hundreds of times, but the few that I played Origins must have stuck a bug in my brain and caused an overlap. I could have sworn that Cid was in FFI, and all FF's.

That aging bastard is even in (activates flameshield) "The Spirits Within".

I wonder though if he is in FF:MQ? (If you consider that a FF, that is)

Edit: Disregard what I just said...I am beating myself over the head with an original FF1 cartrage for saying such things about the series.

My favorite is Final Fantasy 9. It was the first FF game I played, and it was my first playstation game. I love all the characters (especially Zidane) and the plot was awesome. I've also spent over 125 hours on my file, and did everything there is to do in the game. heart.gif FFIX.

Second favorite is FF5, which is probably why I'm here. I got the playstation game for Christmas two years ago, and I think it was much better than FFVI (which was also included with it.) FF5 had some really crap characters, but it had an awesome story/plot.

Probably the biggest reason I like FFVIII so much is the whole idea of Squall and Rinoa's developing relationship. Seriously, they developed into the greatest couple in the series (closely followed by Tidus and Yuna).

First
Possible spoilers: highlight to view
Squall can't stand Rinoa, but she's totally into him.

Then
Possible spoilers: highlight to view
They at least start to respect each other at FH.

Then
Possible spoilers: highlight to view
Rinoa goes comatose at the end of Disc 2 and Squall is beside himself with worry and pain.

Then
Possible spoilers: highlight to view
On the Ragnarok, they completely fall for each other with "Eyes On Me" playing in the background. (Still brings a tear to my eye every time I think about it)

Finally
Possible spoilers: highlight to view
In the ending, when Squall appears nearly dead, Rinoa finally tells him "I love you" and Squall finally kisses her after the ending credits. (Yes! Hero gets the girl!)

Just thinking about this stuff still gets me all misty-eyed. Damn it! I promised myself I wasn't gonna cry! *sniff-sniff*

My favorite by far is FF7. The darkness appeal, the transformation of Sephiroth from a calm, collected, and rational war hero into an unstoppable villian, just trying to figure out what was going on with Cloud. The way the game started in Midgar and the entire atmosphere is completely unique from any other FF. It was like a Psychological Thriller, but a video game. One that actually made you think when you went to bed at night.

Also, I don't get why people say the characters didn't have depth, they all had long engaging backstories besides King Marshmallow Cat.

Cid - Starts out as just an angry pilot, until you learn of his former dreams of going into outer space and how he sacrificed his dream to make sure the girl was okay.

Barrett - Probably more depth than anyone and yet he somehow gets the stereotype of "the black guy that swears and has a gun arm". His daughter (Marlene?), his anger at Shinra, his old town of Corel, his former friend Dyne that went nuts, I can go on and on, I just don't get how people can rag on his character when he has so many significant scenes. And I don't even like him that much, Vincent's guns were much cooler than the arm.

Even Yuffie and Vincent had large backstories (Vincent's mostly secret), and they weren't even required characters. Red and Seto? Tifa and growing up with Cloud, helping him figure things out in the Lifestream?

I don't know how people can say FF7's characters didn't have depth.

The clouds ran away, opened up the sky
And one by one I watched every constellation die
And there I was frozen, standing in my backyard
Face to face, eye to eye, staring at the last star
I should've known, walked all the way home
To find that she wasn't here, I'm still all alone

Tactics is definitely my favorite for it's brilliant and complex plot, interesting take on a battle system and job-classes. It had everything I want in a game, battles where you can't just mash Attack and get through and actual thought needs to be put into character leveling and development, a storyline that while isn't entirely perfect, is interesting and draws you to keep playing.

After Tactics is Final Fantasy 6, for the obvious reason of it being the game that got me involved in the Final Fantasy world in the first place. It's epic plot and interesting characters (with the exception of Locke, who I wished would die in a fire.) The battle system was simplistic but thanks to the use of espers, allowed for a fun way to play with character's skills. It also includes my favorite villain to date, Kefka.

Followed by 6 is 7. The story, while having that "unfinished quality" at the time was interesting enough to keep me playing. The characters seemed at times exaggerated even by Square general standards, but that's exactly what gave them their appeal to me. You either loved a character or hated him/her. The Materia system was interesting and dare I say fun. I stress this a lot in games, but I like feeling that I'm in control of a character's strengths and weaknesses and how those progress. Even despite the characters programmed growth, you still were able to mix it up. Also, it sounds fanboyish but I'll say it anyways. I loved Sephiroth as a character. I like the idea of him "falling" into madness as opposed to always being a crazed psychopath. I don't worship him as the greatest antagonist of all time, but still you can't dispute he was a badass.

My favorite has changed over time. At first my favorite was FFVI. I still enjoy the characters, story, mythology and setting of the game very much. But, when truly thinking about it my attitude towards VI will always be tinted with a bit of wistful and rose-colored nostalgia. It was the game of my childhood (pre-teen years, anyway).

Overall I think that FFVII is the FF masterpiece. It took me awhile and a couple of playthroughs to realize that despite the bishy-ness of the characters (initially I had forwned upon VII in a fit of old-school FF pretentiousness and had not played it until many years after it had come out...) that the depth, game mechanics, story and characters, while not quite un-paralelled in the whole scheme of FF was truly the most engrossing and therefore the best.

Tactics is definitely also in the mix for favorite. The genius of the gameplay is enough to destory one's social life. I must say I have logged more hours in Tactics than any other game.
