1- Select Sabin's Blitz command.
2- When the finger is on Sabin, hit 'Left', 'Right', and then 'Left', and then hit confirm.
3- Sabin executes Pummel, and the battle ends.

If you mean before that, have Edgar use Bio Blaster or Auto Crossbow on the Ipoohs while Locke attacks. Put Terra in the back row, and have her cast Fire on all enemies or something, while watching out to heal. You shouldn't have a problem if you're around level 10 or something.

On the emulator, I tried Aurabolt, and it worked. ("When did...you learn that?" xD), but on the Playstation version, only Pummel seems to work.

Or I don't remember, and I'm crazy, who knows.

Pummel is the only Blitz that automatically kills Vargas, none of the others do.

i'm just curious this guy was just talking about killing Vargas without pummel, Then goes on to say he confused Whelk's Shell with Vargas. does anybody else see something wrong with that? For instance How blatantly different they are, and pretty much impossible to confuse, because you can't even use blitz against whelk.

You can kill Vargas without using Pummel, but you need to be on a very high level in order to do sufficient damage before the timer expires. (If it reaches 0, you die.) The only difference is that instead of the fake-looking death that you see when you use Pummel, Vargas will go through the full death throes. (In other words, it will take a while for the boss to fade away.)

The only way that you can kill Vargas without Sabin is by cheating. Even if you are at level 99, you will not kill Vargas with one hit, because he has 11,600 HP. (If you just do one hit of 9,999, Vargas will have had enough, and Sabin will show up.) In order to kill Vargas before Sabin arrives, you need to be on a high level and have Genji Glove, Offering, or Gem Box.

If you do manage to kill Vargas before Sabin arrives, the only difference is that you will not go through the scene where Sabin confronts Vargas and uses Pummel. (The battle will end, and the normal dialogue will take place, where Sabin vows to get revenge on the Empire and joins the party.)

I'm also having trouble getting past Vargas, whenever I press left with the cursor on Sabin, it goes back to the menu.

But I'm also using a ROM, and I'm thinking I've encountered an inescapable glitch.

No, you have to select the Blitz command. The hand will point to Sabin. Then enter the buttons, and press OKAY. And then he'll use the Blitz.

I select "Blitz." it points to Sabin, then as soon as I press left... it's back on the menu. And I usually get slapped by Vargas.

I tried that, and I end up with the cursor back on Sabin. What happens is I confirm Blitz, then when I press left it exits back to the menu, then goes to "Def," then back to "Blitz," then Blitz gets confirmed again with the cursor on Sabin ad infinitum.

Well, in order to level up your characters to level 99, you would either have to level them up the traditional way (You would probably want to pull your hair out since enemies that early in the game give low EXP.) or just hack your way through it and make them level 99 (Terra would get Ultima and Merton. Pretty cool!).

i have. i used aura bolt (b/c he knows both of those blitzes in the begining)

the only diff is no long speach about how he should've realized the errors of his ways. he just dies.

he wont die automatically like with pummel, you have to take all his hp

You don't have to cheat if you don't save after the first save state...

I went through the game like 8 times without saving (and without save states, because I played on my old SNES) before I got to lvl 99.

It's long, useless and frustating when your mom shut down your Super Nintendo in the Phoenix Cave... in case you're wondering!

I personally think he was making stuff up to garner attention.
Either that or he smoked a little too much... :\

And I remember as a 8-year-old kid I had no idea how to perform a blitz. They tutorial is a little confusing, in my opinion. They make it vague...

They should say: Select Blitz, while the cursor is pointing at Sabin (thats the finger for all you kiddies), hit Left then Right then Left, and then hit Confirm.

Not: Select Blitz, hit left right and then left again, and then confirm it as the cursor is pointing at a 90 degree angle to the left of sabin, then you must watch the blinkly light, as that is occuring, dance on your head while doing the mambo and learning how to use a unicycle.

:c confused my poor 10-year-old butt

That would be me.

I didn't confuse them on appearance. The general theme of my topic was "situations where you're suppossed to use a certain technique to beat a boss, but beat them some other way."

I knew there were at least two in-game examples. The other one I mentioned was beating Ultros 3 without using Sketch.

I thought the other one was Vargas. To be honest, I hadn't tried it on that latest playthrough but I thought I would group it together because I was pretty sure I remembered it. Djibriel, being the incredible wealth of FFVI information that he is, quickly jumped in and pointed out that I was wrong. I only had to look into it for about 5 minutes to discover the absurdity of the claim.

When I read about Whelk's Shell, which you're suppossed to beat by attacking the head only when it's outside of the shell, I thought back to my last playthrough before that (which was probably years ago) and thought maybe that's what I had done--beat Whelk's Shell by attacking the actual shell, the other "don't beat it the way you're suppossed to" example."

I can tell you that after making that post I quickly became attached to making my CoN posts as accurate as possible. It was my first post, and I was not expecting that level of feedback from a video game community. Quite an experience, but enough to make me stick around. smile.gif

Histrionics aside, there were no walkthroughs on the internet when I started playing that game, and I didn't even know there was a strategy guide until I'd played 80% of the way through. It's not that hard.

but has anyone ever wonder if its the first time you ever played the game and then you reached the sabin vs vargas part, and you don't know what button to press to beat vargas?

well you can't just start going around asking people for answers on how to beat vargas. so the game really screwed up for the people that bought the game from the very beginning of when it came out. thumbup.gif
