Anyone else here try a command-only challenge? I hope so. I started mine in order to get into the mood for a magic-only challenge.

I'm at a bit of a loss though, you see. Emerald Weapon is unstoppable for me. I can kill him normally without too much of a problem (it's all stratagy, folks). Just having command materia makes this quite the challenge, though.

For anyone who's done the challenge, can they give me any suggestions as to how to kill this beast?

Oh and none of that "Morph sources till your stats are maxed" crap. No way am I going to do that, it's far too time-consuming.

I assume W-Item counts as a Command? If so then you want to Hero Drink your guys 4 times each, X-Potions (don't bother with Big Guard), and just keep chipping away with 4x Cut. W-Summon is dull and unnessesary. I feel that this challenge is actually a lot easier than it appears.

If you don't want to use W-Item or W-Summon then it's more tricky. White Wind is essential. Have each character with only 2 Command materia each so Aire Tam Storm only deals 2222 damage. If you can master one of your Double Cut materia and therefore have two characters with it this will help greatly. Use Tranquilizer before battle to get your characters with Sadness; limits are not allowed.

Are your characters strong enough to do at least 8000 or so damage a hit? Just curious.

This looks fun...

Are independent materia allowed? If so Emerald'd be too easy.

It's Ruby that's hard

no, its command only, or the one i did at least. ive just done a Enemy skill only and Command only, and it was quite tough to kill him

first, you have to have magic breath. im assuming you cant use limits, so give everyone a tranquilizer and put them in back (something i learned from going through the zolom)

just use highpowered enemy skills and heal when your die...ing. if you are doing independant, equip hp plusses on eveyone and an enemy skill if they're at 9999 hp, but just two, then like sweetdude says, aire tam storm. 7777

I'd say Independant materia and Lucky 7s is cheating but it's entirely up to yourself. Something I forgot to add was put faith in Sprint Shoes - haste is invaluable against Emerald. Don't use Deathblow unless you DO mass Luck Sources; in which case it's irrelevant anyway. Also you could kill off one of your characters before the battle and fight with two. With one character down Cloud's Yoshiyuki becomes nice and powerful giving him a better 4x Cut. I'll add more as I think of it.

(No, not really back yet. I'm taking advantage of the fact I'm on a PC with internet access to check in quickly.)

Mime + a limit break. Put in a couple of Mime materias and you're set for a huge bunch of hits. The solo barret video did it and beat Emerald in about a round. It works. smile.gif

Yes, but they did have Counter in that video.

But yeah, Mime is still broken enough.

A few things:

- I have no idea about the validity of limit breaks, I've never been quite sure about that.

- Mime is, as far as I know, impossible for me to obtain, since a chocobo is required for that, and chocobo lure being independent, means no chocobos.

- Everyone does 8000+, using Barret, Cid and Cloud. Everyone's got X-Attack

- Naturally, no underwater either.

There's a few options I have, first I'm dropping Barret for someone with a little more "Oomph", leaning towards Yuffie. It appears to be a case of me not planning ahead correctly, although this is a bit difficult playing at the maximum speed with active time on. 'Spose I could change that as well.

I miss mime so badly right now.

You could beat Ruby for the Gold. He's definatly easier than Emerald so maybe you should do that if you really crave Mime. Good call with the Chocobo Lure, some people forget that.

Thanks for the support, people!

(Not on my pc...)

Don't you need a chocobo in the first place to trigger the Ruby fight? Or could you do it with the airship? I forgot how that works, but I'm pretty sure you needed a chocobo to do it...

Airship can do it,
Hell Morph is a command materia
Morph for speed and every toehr source apple (Except luck)
Stock up on luck

Don't apply luck until after you beat ruby, get mime, and a full limit gauge, then with perfect stats at the start (barret) loaded his final weapon with a bunch of mastered command materia. Unleash ungermax against emeraldAfter a couple of times, If he isn't dead, you'll probably need to heal (since you don't have counter, youy should have maxed everyone's speed. Cast white wind. then you'll use Highwind and Omnislash. after that's done, use X-fight 12x8000+
and white wind till the end of the battle.

Ciw, but I don't think the Ultimate Weapon's effects are put into calculation for Limit Breaks.

But, with a few Hero Drinks...

Of course, if Limits are allowed.

Hero Drinks... can't say I've ever tried those.

The description of them is quite vague, could you describe what advantages these would give me in battle?

They're my favourite part of FFVII. Recently I found out from Zodiac that you can only use four per character, total shame. Anyway, Hero Drinks increase your stats for one battle - even past 255. My Cloud's attack at 255 strength was 8000, after one Hero Drink it was jazzed up to 9999. That should give you an impression.

And to put you off, I still think using items (even via W-Item) is cheating in a Command only challenge.

You can win them from Chocobo Racing, but really, if you want to keep your sanity you'd clone a bunch of them, unless you have morals and don't like 'cheating'.

I have no morals. I kick orphans on christmas morning.

The question is to whether or not I've got two on me. I haven't played in a while.

You can still do it with one. When you cancel with the second item you pick, it'll give you back the first one you used, so you only need one.

You need four per character and no, they don't run out. I'd still keep one spare for later cloning - Ruby is no picnic in a Command only challenge. Good luck!
