It was just today that I learned his last name is "Faramis" -- Gast isn't his surname. Is this information found anywhere in-game or is it the product of Ultimania translations, overseas articles, etc...something that isn't readily availalble.

If it is found in the game, I'm guessing it's attached to Ifalna rather than Gast himself. I don't honestly remember.

That's his name, though, not Ifalna's. Aeris' last name, stated in the insert booklet, is Gainsborough, which seems to be her mother's as well. Gast's, astoundedly, isn't said anywhere that I've found. The Icicle Inn videos may shed light, but I highly, highly doubt it. I'd pin my answer on the Ultimania guide, if anything.

If you're wondering why I'm asking, someone is trying to say that Aeris' real last name is Faramis and not Gainsborough. =/

I don't think that the information is official. This is the first time I've heard the name "Faramis," and I can't find any reputable sites that use it.

I tried Googling the following search terms:

Faramis & "Final Fantasy 7"
Faramis & "Final Fantasy VII"
Faramis & FF7

All I found are links to the forums of ff7ac.net, an Advent Children fan site.

Wikipedia gives a slightly similar name but a very important extra fact:

There is no "official" romanisation given apparently, so for all I care in the english version his last and as far as the game says, only name is Gast.

Plus, Gainsborough probably is not a name connect to Gast except that
Possible spoilers: highlight to view
it's the name his daughter recives when she is adopted by Elmyra Gainsborough.

Faramis/Faramisu may be her actual name in the Japanese version, but the English version hasn't got an equivelant. Even then, her legal name is Aeris Gainsborough. Or Aerith if we must split hairs. Even though I still think one is Midgarianised and the other's the Cetra name because it solves the debate over which is correct in one fell swoop but they'd rather have it a bland one or t'other choice.

Are you sure Gainsborough is Elmyra's surname and not Ifalna's? I wasn't having the "Faramis is Aeris' last name even if the game says otherwise" convo for very long, although I did a search and got hits to FF7 Insider and a few others.

Well, look at it like this. Wiki says it is but again, does not seem to cite a source IIRC. Secondly, why would Aeris retain her actual name after being adopted if she was trying to avoid recapture? It is a little more logical for it to be Elmyra's name.

Well, ShinRa knew where Aeris had resided since she was young despite her best efforts to hide, so I don't think a name change would really matter at that point. I'd like to believe it's her true name and not Elmyra's, myself.

That makes more sense, considering that Gainsborough doesn't sound very Cetra-like.

Actually, look at the wikipedia article again, this time keeping in mind that the Japanese put the family name first and the given name last. Professor Gast's name is "Gasuto Faremisu", or, anglicized, "Faramis Gast".

So "Faramis" is his given name, and Gast remains his surname. Gainsborough comes from Elmyra. And Hojo doesn't quite have another name, leading his son to have a single name, a tragic backstory, and a screwed-up mind. Well, it's not his name's fault, but it's his fault anyway.

(How ironic that I'd be the one saying this, since I generally like given name first and family name second, as is done in English.)

I was always under the impression that Gainsborough was Elmyra's surname. Because, yeah, it doesn't sound very Cetra-like.

Anyway, this is news to me. I've never heard of Gast's last name, as I assumed it was just Gast.

Edit: Aha! It seems that he actually does have a last name.

***Gast Faremis*** (Page 59)

Aerith's father. He was once the head of Shin-Ra Company's Science Department.
Conducting research on the first humans, the Ancients, he believed Jenova
[whom he had discovered] was an Ancient and began "the Jenova Project" to
increase the Ancients' numbers, but during the process, he recognized his
failures and resigned. At Icicle Lodge, with the cooperation of Ifalna, he
would conduct original research that would make progress. However, shortly
after their daughter was born, he was killed by Hojo and the results of his
research were taken.

While interviewing Ifalna about the Ancients and other matters, they began to
love one another. They then led a modest but happy life, but......

Well, it's pretty interesting, I suppose.

Shinra go to war abroad with the town of Wutai. The fierce pride of the
leader Godo has kept Shinras influence out of the town, but they are quickly
crushed and Wutai has to become a tourist town to carry on and survive. Somehow
during this time, Ifalna escapes from Shinra Headquarters Laboratory with Aeris
and gets as far as Sector 7 station in Midgar. Here, exhausted and wounded she
hands Aeris over to Elmyra Gainsborough and then dies. During their first
meeting Elmyra's husband is killed far away and this is sensed by Aeris.

Elmyra adopts Aeris and raises her. Aeris grows up showing strange intuitive
powers and an affinity with nature. She keeps about her person a small white
pearl of materia that her dead mother left for her. This is actually the
materia for summoning Holy. But Aeris is not aware of its power. As she grows
up, Tseng the leader of the Turks pesters her. He wants to take her back to
Shinra Headquarters, but Aeris manages to avoid Shinra every time.

Oh yeah, aren't all Professers/Scientists called by their last name anyways? So it's seems strange to be called by his first, but meh, there is Scientists who hate being called by there last name.

no.

the "reversal" convention only goes for eastern names. western names romanised into japanese retain their western directionality. after all, by your theory, it would be "strife cloud" and "lockheart tifa."

i suppose aerith's true name, by birth, would indeed be "aerith faremis." but her name is "gainsborough;" both of her birth parents have been long dead and she was adopted by a woman whose surname was "gainsborough." do adopted children take their birth parents' last name, or that of their adoptive parents?
