I voted for Edge's masamune because it's my favourite.

Not a big fan of FFV, but I thought the "ultimate weapons" stashed away for future generations was kind of cool.

Im gonna go with Frog/cyrus's Masamune. It has the most story background to go with it then any other weapon in Square/squaresoft/square enix history that I know about.

What I didn't like about the CT masamune was that it wasn't a katana. It was a long sword or something like that. it breaks the tradition of the real masamune, which FF7 keeps. other games have as well, but I think FF7 did it best.

To me, the Chrono Trigger Masamune looks like a two-handed sword of some kind. (Frog wields the sword with both hands during battle.) I don't think that you can classify it any more specifically than that, since the sword is a fantasy sword and not a historical sword.

I'd like to make a simple historical argument here:

Masamune was never in actuality a sword. Masamune is a second name given to Goro Nyudo, one of the most reverred sword smiths of Japan. Masamune forged swords around the 14th century AD. One of the swords he created is known as the "Honjo Masamune," and is regarded as one of his greatest works. It's entirely possible that the Honjo Masamune is the basis for the Square Masamunes, but I'm more partial to believe that the swords are a tribute to Masamune himself as opposed to any given creation of his.

Another famous swordsmith, Muramasa, forged swords two centuries after Masamune, also makes an appearance in Square games.

Without trying to revitalize whatever argument was going on here, but hoping to touch on the historical legend a bit because it's interested me for awhile and does have some relevancy to the thread, I believe an appearance in Square games is correct. As far as I know, the Muramasa has only ever appeared in FFT, where it appears with Masamune and Murasame. I've never played FFT, but CoN's guide verifies this.

In FFIV, the two legendary swords wielded by Edge are named Masamune and Murasame. At first I thought Murasame was just an inaccurate translation of Muramasa, but was later informed that it's also an actual sword of Japanese legend. Still, that it should appear with Masamune is odd, since the Japanese legend in question pits Masamune's blade against that of his rival, Muramasa. I think Square chose the wrong sword in this or any other instance that they presented Murasame instead of Muramasa along with the Masamune, and I believe there's at least one other but can't think of it at the moment.

I picked FFVII because I suppose there is some of the FFVII fanboy in me and I think that Sephiroth's sword is cool, and adds a lot to his character, especially the mystique surrounding him and the fact that only he can use his sword. However, I think that naming it the Masamune was again a bit of a misnomer on Square's part. If I remember the legend correctly, during the test Masamune and Muramasa each placed their swords in the water as a test. A leaf flew downstream and Muramasa's blade sliced it perfectly in half. A second leaf flew downstream, and curved around Masamune's blade, showing that Masamune's blade was more pure and only capable of taking life when necessary, whereas Muramasa's was designed for efficient and unrestrained killing. That Sephiroth should wield the Masamune makes no sense, except to maybe accompany his "fallen angel" character development. But considering the copious amount of bloodletting that he does, by all means, it should have been the Muramasa that he wielded.

My thinking on this is that Square does not take the actual legends into careful account when naming these swords.

The CT 'Masamune' is actually called the 'Grandleon' (or was it 'Grandeon' or Granleon'...), so it isn't a 'true' Masamune.

I love all the incarnations.

FFI- Ultimate weapon, better than Excalibur
FFII- One of the best swords, and casts Haste for free!
FFIII- Another legendary weapon in Eureka
FFIV- Edge's weapon in the Core of the Moon.
FFV- One of the Sealed Kuza weapons. Gives you an 'Initiative' type effect
FFVI- Woosley kerfunkled it as 'Aura', somehow...One of Cayenne's best weapons.
FFVII- Sephiroth's badass katana.
FFVIII- One of Gilgamesh's random attacks. (I only get Zantetsuken and Excalipoor...)
FFIX- One of Zidane's best weapons. Casts 'Death Sentence' as a status effect.
FFX- Auron's Ultimate Weapon. It looks like some magical fork...
FFXI- I don't know.
FFXII- We'll see!

Is it in Tactics? I'm sure it is, but I just want to make sure.

Edit: I haven't played Seiken II for a long time...was it one of the best weapons?

Wasnt Aurons ultimate weapon called Murasame? I could have sworn it was pinch.gif

Murasame is one of his better weapons, but not his Ultimate. The Masamune is (I swear it looks like a red fork...)

Yes, the legends regarding the swords are interesing. =3

Well, if you think deeply about it, Sephiroth didn't go around crazily killing everyone with his sword. Sure, he summoned a meteor that was gonna kill EVERYONE, but he didn't kill them with his sword. thumbup.gif

I'll go with Glenn/Frog's Masamune, because you have to go through time to repair it.

Edit
OH! And Sephiroth was a hero of SOLDIER, before he when all crazy and stuff. blink.gif

* I do NOT consider Chrono Cross canon.

How is Chrono Cross not canon? ohmy.gif

1. Because I don't like the premises of Chrono Cross.
2. Because they took an excellent story that ended and made it not end.
3. Because Schala still has problems.
4. Because the Masamune gets problems, and I don't like that.
5. Because that's not the right Glenn.
6. Because "Mastermune" is a lame name.
7. Because Lucca gets problems.
8. Because the one single romantic relationship among all of videogame characters that I'd actually (gasp!) enjoy seeing further development of doesn't get developed further.

So, like Koji Igarashi did with several Castlevania games (to my disappointment, but that's irrelevant here), I decided to excommunicate Chrono Cross from my idea of the Chrono universe's canon plot.

Interesting how two or three of my reasons (i.e. a significant portion) are related to the Masamune. I personally consider the Masamune to be some kind of legendary sacred sword, and that's one big factor.

It's too bad that it is canon. thumbup.gif

Another Masamune I adore is Jitan's Masamune. I used that Death Sentence to kill those annoying Yans at lower levels. I prefer it to 'The Tower' because it only has Mini as a status effect. With his Masamune, you can just use Soul Blade and take down pretty much any enemy*.

*Any normal encounter, anyway.

Well, you can go ahead and do that, but it is definitely canon. Star Wars fans have to deal with Jar Jar Binks, Bronte fans have to deal with the lame ending to Jane Eyre, and the significant faction of Chrono fans that despise Cross (of which I am not a part; I have mixed feelings about CC) have to deal with its existence in the Chrono mythology. You can pretend it isn't there, but doing so is just stubborn ignorance.

^Chrono Cross is the Chrono series' version of Final Fantasy VII. A really great game, but bad for its series. FFVII had the shame of having to follow in the footsteps of the legendary FFVI, and Chrono Cross similary had to follow in the footsteps of the legendary Chrono Trigger. As a standalone game, Chrono Cross is excellent though. -CSM

I went for Zidane's masamune, because I had the feeling he wouldn't get any votes. And I was right. tongue.gif Just kidding.

It's actually the most mundane-looking of all his weapons, but it's the only weapon of his (aside from the Orichalcon) that actually gives him a stat boost. So that makes me happy.

I might have gone for Sephiroth's masamune if I were playing FF7 right now and in a more FF7-ish mood, but I just got through frying up Yans and the masamune has provided some very fun times with casting its DOOM on those Angry Killer Sheep. So there we go.

Plus I thought it was a awsome Idea to fight the Spirits of the sword before obtaining it.
