There are a lot of classic non-RPGs that I like -- particularly on the NES -- but to make things easier, I'm going to talk about my favorite RPGs.

1. Chrono Trigger (SNES, 1995): I fell in love with this game immediately. It has a great story, great characters, and an awesome soundtrack. Square managed to pull off a difficult theme: time travel. The ability to beat the game at any point added replay value.

2. Final Fantasy IV (SNES, 1991): Although I had played NES RPGs such as FF1, Dragon Warrior, and Crystalis, FF4 was the first true RPG I played. By that, I mean that it was the first game I played where the characters seemed human. Although primitive by today's standards, this game was truly a landmark.

3. Final Fantasy Tactics (PS1, 1997): I had a friend in childhood whose dad always bought her games as soon as they were released, and this was one of the many games I got to sample before the Christmas season. After she got bored with it, I borrowed it for so long that by the time I was ready to buy my own copy, it was difficult to find. (I ended up buying a used copy of the original version from Funcoland.) The reason this game is so addictive is the battles. In many RPGs, battles become repetitive and boring, but that is never the case in FFT.

4. Final Fantasy VI (SNES, 1994): Having played FF4 and Secret of Mana, I was delighted to learn about the release of another U.S. title. (FFMQ doesn't really count.) I was obsessed with this game for months, although in retrospect, the characters weren't quite as endearing or unique (in battle) as those of FF4.

5. Breath of Fire II (SNES, 1995): This is one of the most underrated RPGs. Some people took one look at the graphics and sound, which were already primitive when it was released, and wouldn't play it. Part of what attracted me to this game was the story: it was one of the first U.S. RPGs to have a story about an evil church. I also liked the variety of anthropomorphic characters, each of which had unique racial abilities.

6. Secret of Mana (SNES, 1993): This game will always hold a special place in my heart. While the characters have somewhat flat personalities and receive little development, the story was engaging, and the real-time combat was a refreshing change from turn-based RPGs. The soundtrack is still enjoyable today. Having the ability to play with two players was a huge bonus, since my brother and I had to share my copy of the game. (Watching someone else play is no fun.)

7. Earthbound (SNES, 1995): I came very close to not buying this game, and that would've been a huge mistake. When I saw the Nintendo Power article, I took one look at the graphics and modern setting, and I said "no thanks." I don't remember what made me change my mind -- maybe it was the free player's guide that came with the game -- but this zany RPG turned out to be a gem. It's one of the few RPGs that successfully incorporated humor -- most RPG jokes aren't funny. This game pulls it off so well that my 10-year-old nephew even liked it. (At first he was not interested in classic RPGs, but I have been training him well.)

8. Final Fantasy VII (PS1, 1997): Back then, I had a lot of complaints about how Square sold out by putting more effort into graphics than game-play and story, and by using cheap gimmicks such as Cloud's Freudian sword and Tifa's back-breaking rack. But deep down inside, I was still impressed by the game, and it was a very enjoyable experience.

9. Alundra (PS1, 1997): Call it a Zelda clone if you like, but this game is better than Zelda. (There, I said it.) The puzzles are much more challenging, and unlike the old Zelda games, there is actually a plot with real character development. The soundtrack really shines in this one.

10. Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis (GBA, 2002): I can't really say that the characters wowed me, but the battles made the grainy music and tiny GBA screen worth tolerating. I've had this game since it was released in 2002, but I really didn't get into it until I beat Final Fantasy Tactics Advance in 2003 and went looking for a more serious tactical RPG.

Interesting that I haven't posted here yet, apparently.

I recently posted elsewhere ( http://interordi.com/mboard/topic.php?id_t...ge=1#post185215 ) the following. I know, they ask for 30 games, but this is only 24 anyway. Whatever.

"In no particular order. Bolded to represent games that I think people should pay more attention to. And these are among games that I have played, so don't be surprised that things like Final Fantasy Tactics and Castlevania Dracula X: Rondo of Blood didn't make the list."

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS)
Final Fantasy V (SNES, NOT PS)
Final Fantasy VI (SNES)
Chrono Trigger (SNES)
Cave Story (Win PC)
Mega Man 6 (NES)
Castlevania: Circle of the Moon (GBA)
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (GBA)
Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse (NES)
Mega Man X (SNES)
Super Mario World (SNES)
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (SNES)
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (originally Super Mario World 3) (SNES)
The Legend of Zelda: a Link to the Past (SNES)
Metroid Zero Mission (GBA)
Metroid Fusion (GBA)
Super Metroid (SNES)
Pokemon GSC (GBC)
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (GBA)
Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)
Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins (GB)
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest (SNES)
Donkey Kong (GB, 1994 expanded edition)
Hocus Pocus (DOS PC)

"Okay, that's all I'm going to put down. That's 24 of them."

"If you want a closer number, I'll give ya Mega Man X2 (SNES) for quirks and Mega Man X3 (SNES, NOT PS) and Ecoquest: the Search for Cetus (DOS PC) for music."

Whoa... this is tough. BEST games I've ever played and what systems I played them on? Aye aye... I'm not good playing favorites, but I'll just list ALL my favorite games!

1.) The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (XBOX360): EVERYTHING'S FLAWLESS!! AY AY AY! I can't say anything bad about this game, and there are too many great things to say. The lip-synching, the character creation, the freedom, the roleplaying, the story (so much background lore!!!)... EVERYTHING IS PERFECT!

2.) Tales of Symphonia (Gamecube): This game was mostly awesome because of it's plot. Best game plot I've ever seen in my life. Absolutely wonderful. Also it had a really fun Battle System.

3.) Kingdom Hearts II (PS2): SECOND best game plot ever. Most good plots are depressing, but this one was rather boosting. It's just that Sora is so much like me in so many ways, I kinda got attached to him like he was my best friend or something. Sort of weird, but I'm not afraid of admitting that I sometimes get attached to characters. Why do you think that people cry in movies, huh?

Okay, that's all I can think of so far.
