Not a stupid question at all.

Isn't it start or select? Try one of those.

You can't edit those controls, no. But it is Select, if I recall correctly. However, if you're emulating the game, I don't believe some emulators show the map correctly unless you turn off a couple of the image layers within the game.

VI shows a small map in the corner while walking, riding, etc. However, unlike VII, pushing start or select doesn't bring up a larger version of it, so you are stuck with a small map.

I've never had a problem with the map display on ZSNES.

well mine happens to be ff3 not ff6 (Snes) and it works with both. You press start and it shows a mini map of the world

I should have mentioned that it's been six years since I played the game on an emulator, if not more.

Edit
I know I was right, I just wasn't very clear. I was trying to say that maybe they patched it in the meantime. smile.gif

You were actually right, Josh. I experienced that exact problem with the map and the layers but it also depends on the hardware and the settings.

When I first started playing FFVI, it was on an emulator, and there was this little red dot in the corner of the screen that bugged me because I had no idea what it was. Then I read online there was a map in the corner of the screen. I thought it was really just radar, showing your little dot within a confined space.
I was having problems with FFV because I could not see in the "underwater" sections of the ship graveyard. I went to a guide that told me which directions to push (up 3 times, left twice, down once, etc) it mentioned the problem could be fixed by tweaking the settings. I did so, and was able to see in the ship graveyard. When I went back to FFVI, an actual map appeared in the corner.

So, in conclusion: If your visual settings are wrong, not having a map is the least of your worries.

To be honest, a new emulator should have transparency covered and layers don't have to be configured at all. Try getting the latest version of ZSNES. On old versions, you often had to turn off certain layers.

Or... try pressing start!

When you're anywhere on the world map (in the airship or walking on the map) just press start and the map shows up (only comes in small size) in the right-bottom corner of the screen.
