Okay, rather than using the Hades+KOtR+Mime technique to fight Ruby this time, I decided to go with a different strategy. This involves a ton of planning, so I figured I might as well go ahead and get everything. Well, one of the things I needed was Counter Materia. Okay, so I race in the S Class, and finally, after like, 10 races, I got Counter. However, it isn't Counter. It's Counter Attack, which helps me none as I already have 3 copies of it and rarely ever use it. The guide says that you get Counter as a Chocobo racing prize. Do you really? And if so, how can you tell which it is? Because on the screen where it shows what prize you've won, it just calls it Counter. Can someone help me with this?
Edit Okay, checked the section on mini games. It doesn't have it listed as a prize, but does have Counter Attack. Tell me, which is it? Has anyone ever even gotten this materia? Does it not exist on certain versions, or what? I saw that it listed another location in the Northern Crater for where to find it, and I've been through there before, gotten every item you possibly can...and I've never gotten Counter, only Counter Attack ![]() This post has been edited by Rhea on 18th July 2006 19:52 -------------------- "If everything's a dream, don't wake me..." |

Oh, my memory is rusty. Counter is either one of those materia you need to get with a chocobo, or it's in the Northern Crater. I can't remember.
Edit: You know the swamp area with the Magic Pots? To the right of that area is another exit. It leads to a room with a light in the center. Check around, I remember a good materia being there. The left of that room is a drop down to where the crew waits. Edit: Check the light, I mean. Edit: Okay, it is in the Northern Cave, and a S/A Rank Prize, according to the database. You get it at the Northern Crater once you reach the bottom, before the Point of No Return. Either talk to Yuffie, or go into a little crater and pick it up. (If you pick it up in the small crater, Yuffie won't give it to you, there's only one copy, IIRC.)

you can get counter in the S class races, it's just very rare. It ticks me off how rare it is, it's my key component to beating the weapons, and I don't want to get 8 counter by mastering the materia 7 times.

I don't think you understand...I'm saying, I've been through this game before. I've gotten "Counter Attack Materia" from both the Northern Cave and Chocobo races. I've been through every single section of the Northern Cave, and I've probably (check that, I have) at least seen every Chocobo racing prize, if I haven't one them. I've only gotten Counter Attack from the Northern Cave, and I've only gotten Counter Attack in the Chocobo races. And when I got it from the Chocobo races, it always called it Counter on the prize page, but I received Counter Attack. You telling me what the guide already does is not helping any. Sorry if I'm being bitchy, but after checking every guide on the subject I can find, and having gone through the game twice, I don't think I'm simply forgetting something.

Well, the Northern Crater has some places that are really hard to get to. (I didn't even know about this until I found it on accident.)
Go to the second Magic Pot area. (Where 'Reunion' is playing.) There'll be a long strip of land. On the upper right corner of the room is an exit to another area. Go through it, and you'll be on the right of an area that goes down (kinda like a crater, ironically.) There'll be a bright light. Check around, and you should find the 'Counter' Materia. (Not 'Counter Attack'.) Go left from this area and fall down into the bottom part of the Crater where the rest of the group is. It's been awhile, but just try it out. I can't promise it'll be it though. -------------------- |

Counter attack is the one from the choco races, They probably listed it counter cause counter attack is too long for the screen possibly.

And, in the place in that amphitheatre-looking rock area, in the glowing green part, there's a materia. I've gotten this before. Anywho, I went there, got the materia...and it was a Counter Attack one. So now I have 5 of those *sigh* Well, I guess I just need to go out and get a new game...I guess mine's just messed up or something. Ah well, thanks for trying to help. -------------------- "If everything's a dream, don't wake me..." |

No, I was just mistaken. If I could find my strategy guide I'd look in it for you. For now, just check out Gamefaqs. Sorry.

The support materia "counter" is defently in the northen crater and as for the counter materia at chocobo races iv actuly also won "counter" and got "counter attack" -------------------- Finished NSG FFX, Playing FFIV again. |

i assume that tis counter materia you are talking about is the support version where if you are attacked you counter it with the paired magic/summon/command

Erm, don't magic and summons only work with Magic Counter? Anywho, yeah, that's the one. Like I said, the only reason I really wanted it was to experiment with a far quicker Ruby strategy than what I normally use. I don't really need it...oh, speaking of which, I decided to just try to mime Ungarmax again and again on Ruby. I'm using Barret's Missing Score weapon, and every time I did an attack against any other enemy, I did max damage. However, when I went to fight Ruby, it only did, like, 300 damage per hit. Can somebody tell me why this is, and what I can do to remedy it? I'm guessing that one of my stats isn't high enough, but what do I need? Strength? Sorry about asking so many questions. I'm experimenting with different ways of defeating the Weapons, leveling materia up, etc. etc. so on and so forth, for another site (compared to them, I'm actually decent at this game. Makes me feel special

You could source up barret's stats, but remember to give him a full limit gauge before hand, once a character has perfect stats it's hard to fill that limit gauge.
Or you could use hero drinks -------------------- "Have you ever seen a baby do that before?" |

Ruby has abnormally high body defence when he doesn't have his claws in the ground, ciw. I think his defence becomes normal when he digs them into the ground.
Yes, Counter allows you to counter with the paired materia. I only have four of it and Mime, I want to do the same thing as in the Yarikomi video. -------------------- |

Ruby's Defense and Magic Defense remain ridiculously high after placing the tentacles; only the damage immunity goes away. Thus, defense piercing attacks are needed to do decent damage. Dice and Guantlet are the only Limits with this property though Cross-Slash can help out with it's Paralysis effect.
Ultimate Weapon damage modifiers don't affect Limits. Whether the Missing Store has zero materia or eight mastered Knights of the Round materia on it, a Limit will be equally effective assuming Level, Attack, and the target's defense are constant. If you still want to mime a Limit repeatedly, Catastrophe is better (though Omnislash will usually outdamage it due to its auto-criticals). Command Counter, a support materia called Counter by the game, is only available on Disc 3 in the Northern Crater. Make sure none of your allies already have it; with five inactive members carrying a full load of 12-16 materia, it's easy for something to hide. Magic Counter, while available at the Chocobo Races, is also available in the Crater. Edit Locations are pointed out in the walkthrough on this site so there's no need for me to describe them. *sigh* I'd heard that Ruby was nearly immune to physical attacks, even after his claws are in the ground. But I'd seen so many videos using Ungarmax to take him out...are all those fakes, that show the attack doing 9999 damage every hit? I doubt that sourcing will help much. All of Barret's stats are pretty high up there. I don't see how 50 or 60 more points will help so much that it will go up over 9k damage each hit. Oh well, back to Hades+KOtR, I guess.
