Okay, wtf. On the Anthology version, some enemy/spell names weren't able to fit in the box, yet in the SNES version they were able to fit them there. Are there less spaces in the PS1 version? Because I don't understand how it can't fit more characters in a 32-bit system than a 16-bit system, unless it has to do with it being ported or whatever.

I own the real 3US cartridge and am playing it now on my SNES. Many times, enemy and spell names are shortened to fit in boxes. How many characters fit in a particular box depends on many factors of the game's engine (how big the box is, how wide the letters are, etc.) not the data-shoving power of the processor.
An explanation for the abbreviations is if they knew ahead of time how big the box was, they decided to limit the number of characters for spell and enemy names to save space on the cartridge. One example is "Fenix Down", it has fewer letters than "Pheonix Down." Also you have "Carbunkl" and "Rflect." Hope this answers your question. -------------------- Status: FF6 -- Finished! Yeah! The stupid thing about Fenix Down in particular is that there are enough characters available for Phoenix Down, including the space. The PSX version still only corrects it as far as PhoenixDown without the space, though.
No idea what was going on there. |

I thing this also has to do with why that stopped using spell names like, "Fire, Fira, and Firaga" and changed it to just "Fire1, Fire2, and Fire3.
I don't really understand the mechanics behind it, but I'm pretty sure it goes along with the limited space thing. -------------------- "Kiros, the second black guy in all of Final Fantasy...unless ofcourse, you count the Black Mages...heh..." ~Me |

Yep. Whereas it fit fine in Japanese. (Phonetic language based on syllables-per-symbol), as compared to english and other languages with single letters.
And everyone got used to the '1, 2, 3' system anyway. Meh. Well, I guess its just weirdness on their part. Carbunkl. xP -------------------- |

As for fitting characters--Yeah, remember those times that you can run text off a text box? Yeah. Especially since space is no longer really an issue (the game is a few MB big at most, and a mere CD-R can hold several hundred MB these days), the important part is how the text looks. Well, the 'ra' 'ga' 'ja' way of spell suffixes was used in the Japanese versions of the games. (I think it was something like 'da', then 'ga' or something, but I don't remember them all. xD) Like I said, they just couldn't fit that in the english text boxes, whereas its like three or four Japanese characters.

I'm pretty sure that it's been that way in the japanese versions, because in Kanji, "Firaga" would only be three symbols, so it wouldn't be a problem, right?

In katakana, it'd be four symbols, so it worked fine in the earlier games. (In the FFIII instruction booklet, I notice they cut down katakana symbols to fit space for some spell names, but you can still tell what the spell name is.)
Yeah, the funky suffixes sure make the names sound more magical. Someone yelling 'Fire 3!!' doesn't sound all that intimidating. Still, if what Tiddles said is true, then this funky way of handling letter space is just all the more confusing. -------------------- |
